We have camped at El Questro twice and it really is a magical place. The private camp sites are definately the way to go you just are a million miles from anywhere but really close in reality. You cannot book the camp sites and it is just first in first served. Our first trip in 2010 we camped in the main area for the first night then sat outside the office at opening time and waited for a site to become vacant - only took 20 minutes. There is plenty to do at El Questro from walks, 4wd, boat trip down the Chamberlain gorge and of course just enjoying the natural beauty. On our first visit our relatives also went horse riding and said it was great. We hired one of the electric motored boats and took three kids with us, it was very relaxing. Kids attemped fishing and all caught little fish which they thought was great. There is a small shop, bar and out door restaurant.
If you are camping we would go out for the day and always put our bathroom gear in the car for the way back past the bar/toilets. We would then stop to 'tub up' and have a beer before returning to our camp - this way we had the best of both worlds.
On our second visit we had an issue with some fellow campers (a large group) where we had inadvertently taken their reserved campsite. They were very very rude and kept walking past our campsite and swearing etc. After a while I went to the office to discuss with the duty manager who was absolutely fantastic in her customer recovery which was great.
I would definately return to ELQ it is just in a magical part of the world.
