“Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola Pollentia Herculanea”
Reviewed June 1, 2011

Pula is the largest city in Istria County, with a really mild climate. The city is best known for its many surviving ancient Roman buildings. As a result of its rich political history, Pula is a city with a cultural mixture of people and languages from the Mediterranean and Central Europe, ancient and contemporary. Pula's architecture reflects these layers of history. Residents are commonly fluent in foreign languages, especially Italian, also German and English.
I traveled to Pula for a conference. I was surprised by the resemblance with the Italian coastal towns. The city planning, the houses, the amount of pizzerie and trattorie, would made you think you were in Italy. Unfortunately, cafes and restaurants close at 10.30 at night, so try not to get hungry after that hour!
I was expecting something more elegant and artistic, and I was not overwhelmed by the touristic exploitation of the city itself and the monuments. So, I would agree with James Joys who though of Pula as a provincial backwater, a city that seems to leave no impact on your mind after having left from it.

“Awesome Roman Amphitheater”
Reviewed October 20, 2010

After a week or two traveling thru Slovenia and the touristy sections of Croatia, we made our way to the Istria Penisula. The city of Pula (at the very tip) was amazing, the old town was so charming with many hidden treasures to be explored. The Amphitheater was unbelievable it almost took your breathe away. This part of Croatia so different from the jagged coastal region in the south. Anyone traveling to Croatia or Slovenia should not miss it.

“Neat place to visit”
Reviewed July 30, 2009

Good seafood, still slightly less expensive because they haven't yet switched to the euro. If you come here, it is well worth it to make the trip to Rovinj, a charming fishing town. Also did the Brijuni Island experience...that was ok. It's neat to say you've been and have seen the animals. It's not a terrible thing to have missed though.

“Holiday in Pula”
Reviewed September 4, 2008

We visited Pula in August and stayed for five days which was a little too long as there is not enough to do in Pula for that time. However it was possible to easily travel to Rovinj and other towns by bus. We did not have a car, but I would not want to drive in Pula. It is also possible to get to Brioni by boat but other than the pictures of Tito there is little to see on the island.

The old town was quite pleasant, but relatively small and easy to get around. Being interested in things Roman I enjoyed the visit to the arena and the augustine temple. Outside the old town Pula seemed a little tatty and run down.

Some of the restaurants were good and pleasant to eat in and Pompeii has excellent pizzas and excellent service. However one of the restaurants in the main square - Nanna I think it was had poor aggressive service, charged a cover and for bread we did not have and should be avoided.

“Camping at Bi Village, Pula”
Reviewed August 23, 2008

We returned from a camping holiday at the Bi Village site on the outskirts of Pula. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and would highly recommend the area. Our party consisted of Mum, Dad 13 year old son and his friend. All thoroughly enjoyed the camp site and surrounding area. The only complaint the boys had was that the facilities were aimed at either the younger children or the older teenagers and so they fell in neither goup. This didnt stop them arranging thier own footie matches etc and they made lots of friends. Local villages were very italian in flavour and extremely interesting with many churches and historical sites to visit, the amphitheatre is a must. The local restaurants in the villages along the coast were excellent with fresh fish an obvious speciality. Highly recommend this very beautiful and reasonably priced areas with lots to do and see for all. Only warning - beware rocky beaches and coastline make sure you have crocs or diving shoes as these really are a necessity. Would return!!!
