“Buffet even worst than a Chinese hotel and no smoking national law is not respected !!”
I lodged here after a few years I wasn't and my booking rate was inclusive of airport transfer, breackfast, in room chek in, free internet.
Let me introduce that in past I lived in Ningbo for 3 years and I was a "frequent" guest of dinner buffet and Lobster Restaurant due the meetings with vendors and friends.
The hotel was opened on 2009 and the general manager was a GREAT italian guys grow in hotels stuff so the start up was smoothly.
Infact I know for shure that Shangri-La was using for all Asia's hotel same suppliers for the food and not locals (that in China always it means expired or bad food) so my frequent experiences was great, the choise in the buffet was various and top-notch quality for western and Asia food to ( I tell yo a trick in China when you are in a buffet and you smell badly fish testy on the air, leave the buffet immediately, this is 90% of buffet in China even 5 stars).
Well, this smell never was present in past years, there was all kind of meat for the barbecue (chops, beef, sausages, etc, the refrigerators in the back of the barbecue was always full, the stuff was half foreigner and chinese waiters but well runned).
Last Sunday I arrived and well come was great but stop there.
In the evening I got my buffet with a vendor and I was disgusted to see how down those guys (managed by a german general manager are going deeply in the bottom).
First of all from December 2011 in China there is a National law that don't allow any more the smoke in public restaurants and I have to say since I live in China in many place like Shenzhen, Guanghzou, Shanghai, Qingdao they apply for it even if Chinese guest looks like ignorant about it.
Second the bad smell of fish was fully present together with the smoke even my guest was Chinese (they love fish) he din't face at any kind of sea food....
The barbecue area was desolated and jast a few "dead conditions" Chinese sausages was offered together with same undefined kebabs.
The cookers wasn't able to understand even a basic English (fortunately I can talk Mandarin) and the meat refrigerators on the back side of the round barbecue was EMPTY !
The Beijing duck was absent, replaced from a sad pizza and only goose was available (but be carefully, in Ningbo where evar you'll go you'll get mostly bones than meat for duck and goose too).
The brad was old, there wasn't any choise of Italian pasta bust jast a few cold hand made Chinese ramien (like spaghetti) that was not too much inviting, as well I asked the cooker to prepare me a dish only with garlic and olive oil and a liitle bit of spicy, the result was a disaster of an unaffordable spicy mixture or nuddles (colds) and with half spone of olive oil (I said to add more byt they didn't probably because the management is recommending to save money in every way).
The day after I awaked for my breackfast and at 8.20 AM there was no bacon available (only 4 pieces that I got for cold) the scrambled eggs was absent so I had to wait longer to get and sausages I believe from the color was the same of the evening before.
Neither the coffe (that I clearly asked in Chinese for an Espresso) was able to well start my day, infact I got a cup of dirty cold water, there wasn't marmelade, only one kind of croassant was available and fruit I remark was mixed with the one of previous evening.
Finally I left the hotel able to say thay Marriot Ningbo actually is the only affordable hotel if you wish to have a decent meal. My consideration is also based on the fact that Only the room rate in Marriot is more expensive than the rate I got in Shangri-la (airport pick up with limo, brackfast and I got a free upgrade to the harbour view) now you know why Marriot is more expensive, even more is located along the river in a quite place that Shangri-la can't offer.
