Kostas and Renaki, Thessaloniki, Greece

We will try to give you some tips and share our experience in a nutshell.

Tips:
- Book your Spa therapy on the first day of your arrival as you may not find available therapies. We went to book after the second day and there were no available therapies until two days before our departure. The spa is amazing and we had the best treatment ever!!

- Take rubber shoes along for swimming as you may be scratched by the corals. It doesn't seem important but it is, you will enjoy the PERFECT waters better.

- Take sun protection cream as you are all the time under the sun.

- You can ask for snorkeling equipment on the first day (for free) and you can return it on the last day.

- Water Camera is a must as the underwater sea life is magnificent. Book a safari snorkeling.

- Ask for a villa that is not facing the In Ocean Villas as they are not the better view from the island. The sea also from the other side of the island is better and very clean.

- Activities such as canoeing, surfing, and catamaran are free

- Tips are always welcome but not necessary

- Not a super market on the island

- There is a Gym

- Try opening some coconuts falling from a tree. They are very tasty (If you manage to break them though…).

- Still and Sparkling water is free in the room. You will pay it though to the restaurant

Rooms:
Ok, rooms are not the cleanest ever, but are beautiful and romantic. Ok, you are in an island; you can become one with the nature.

We strongly believe that Beach Villas are far better than In Ocean Villas. In Ocean Villas have better rooms for sure but there is no connection with the island, only by boat!! When you are in the island you can wondering around everywhere, swimming, walking round the beautiful island, playing and not feeling imprisoned in a room.

Pack light as you will not need any shoes. The hotel provides Towels - Slippers (ugly ones though...) - Bathrobes - perfect shampoo and shower gel - mosquito sprays - flash lighter - CD player - Sea towels – coffee - tea

There is a TV in the room, although we did not use it at all. Also Wi -Fi internet inside the room for free, although most of the times is slow as a turtle on vacations…

Food:
Ok, the food some days is excellent, some others just nice. We enjoyed most of the food.

Night fishing is ok as it lasts only for two hours. It is quite an experience as you are in the middle of the Indian Ocean but certainly it is worth better if you catch a fish. You will be served the fish the next day but specify exactly the way you want it cooked. We caught a fish almost 3 kg and we were served only a small part of it with ketchup (???) and French fries (They are probably still eating the rest of it…).

Drinks ordered in room are too expensive but prices are ok at the bar. Try Mango - Mojito !!

There is nothing to be scared of, on the little island or in the sea. Baby sharks are adorable, and all fishes are friendly. There are some fruit eating bats, very beautiful, not dangerous of course, they will not bother you at all (to be honest I liked them and I am a normal person)

People
The stuff is FANTASTIC! Very polite, very nice people, very helpful

Beautyful island with great beach. The riff is also very nice and you can see and find a lot!! The IN OCEAN VILLAS are amazing! Really!! ... and also is the beauty SPA! We can recomend it absolutely!! And try the cast away picknick, just amazing!!!!
But there've been also a lot of things which didn't work for a 5 star resort! Some of the staff were not kind and professional at all!! Most of the time we had to wait more then normaly for a drink, food and information. Everything took a lot of time. It seemed that this was normal! The price/quality range was NOT ok. The food was poore and the variety on the buffet for dinner was insufficent for that price we payed! 80 dollar per person withouth drinks to get not even 5 different warm dishes! Our deluxe beachfront villa was not very clean. Anyway it was not state of the art. Hope that in future food will getting better and saff more professional, but first of all the management . It was a lot of confusiong since we booked until we left. After that the resort could be in my opinio a very very nice place to stay!

Management response from BTGroup, Executive Assistant Manager
(Management representative)
18 Nov 2009
Dear fungor,

We are very sorry that you found the food in our resort not up to your liking. We try to cater to the different tastes of our guests from different nationalities and we often receive positive feedback. However, we do understand that it may not have suited your particular tastes. I am also concerned to read about your comments on the professionalism of our staff. Let me assure you that associate development is one of our priorities and constant training is being provided to all of our associates to make sure that service provided to our valuable guests are exceptional. We will continue to do our best in this direction.

We are happy to read that you had enjoyed the private picnic on deserted island, our spa treatments and the InOcean Villas. We hope that this isolated service lapse has not completely marred your Velavaru vacation and we look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back

Best regards,

Mohamed Hilmy

We have come to this paradise for honey moon. The clearly blue sky, the clearly blue sea, and the clearly charming view here attract us most.

Get up every morning and breathe in fresh air; it is just a matter of life. No more works, no more stress, just enjoy and relax! Going out and wandering on the beach, feeding fish with a bit of bread, whispering gently with the wind, what a wonderful world.

Enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner at the beachside, served sincerely by the friendly waiters. Feel like a guest of privilege while like a family of harmony. We tried fusion of food here, such as Chinese congee, Singapore noodles, European dishes , Japanese sashimi, Middle-East grilled meat…………sip with a cup of red wine, dance with cheerful partner….

Apart from relaxation, here is a place for excitements as well. The house reef snorkeling is the most attractive activity. Marvelous fish and coral are so close to reach out. No wonder people name Maldives as “Paradise”.

I returned to Angsana Velavaru to try its new InOcean Villa.

Firstly, what a great concept!! As I had my sisters and kids with me, I opted for the 2 bedroom Sanctuary Villa. It is absolutely the best!! 180 degree view of the ocean with no blockage. The kids loved the full sized pool and when they wanted more, they went down the platform directly into the ocean for some snorkelling. Don't forget the "sala" at the end, just sit and relax and enjoy. We had unbelievable sunsets and sunrises!

Service was great (we had a traditional drum welcome) and all snorkelling gear, was delivered to our villa after we checked in. We had welcome sorbet which was different and refreshing, especially after the seaplane ride from the north.

If you are planning to stay in a water villa in the Maldives, you definitely have to try out the InOcean Villas. Another great feature is the proximity to the land (Velavaru Island) and do what I did, a combination of both - InOcean and land. This way, you've experienced all Maldives has to offer!

Location for Angsana was quite far (40 mins even by water plane) but once you get there, we felt it was worth the trip!
Spouse and I spent our honeymoon at Angsana Velavaru and enjoyed our time absolutely at our in ocean villa (IOV). It's hard to complain when you can wake up each morning with a stunning view of the Indian Ocean. We stayed in a premier IOV and there was so much space for two people. I imagine if you stayed in the "regular" IOVs, that space would not have been a problem either. From what I see on the outside, the only difference was the pool in the premier IOV was slightly bigger and you get a day bed close to the ocean. The hardest part to staying in the IOV was deciding where to nap in the afternoon! Fabulous! Remember to ask for a room facing away from the main island and the restaurant as it had a better view and it had more privacy (i believe odd number rooms)! Otherwise, the people in the restaurant could see you as you are lounging outside.
The staff there are very polite. Each time we see them, they ask how we were and they do take the time to remember our names. Housekeeping came twice a day and they leave cookies and a souvenir for us with their turn-down service which are a nice touch.
Breakfast on the IOV side is fantastic! Champagne and fresh juice at breakfast to make your own mimosas (all you can drink)! Spouse and I ate only breakfast and dinner while we stayed as the all you can eat breakfast was quite filling. Only mild dissatisfaction came at dinner where the choice at the restaurant was the set menu or the buffet (designated night). If you go half board or full board, then that would have been fine but we decided to go without as we thought we cannot eat $60 per person at dinner by looking at the menu provided in the villa (drinks were not included in the half board or full board option). We found out after that you can only eat from the set menu at the restaurant and there was no other choice. Spouse and I end up going back to our villa and ordered in room as I am a picky eater and I only wanted half of the set menu. But it turned out fine as the view from the balcony was unbeatable and it was cheaper. The night we went for the buffet costed $90 per person! Good food but pricey! Another thing was the restaurant served only the guests in the IOVs (guests from the island were not allowed on the IOV side apparently). The food and service in the restaurant was so much better than on the island, so there was no need to venture to the other side.
Spouse and I had a cast-away dinner as well during our stay ($450-650 depending on your food selection) which was an unforgettable experience. The staff whisk you away in a speedboat for a 20 min boat ride to your own island and they proceed to cook your dinner by the ocean. You get your own cook and your own server on your own island! The food was excellent and the environment-- magical! We saw so much stars, it was unbelievable! Wished we had booked to go earlier in the afternoon as we found out after that we could have snorkel there as well! The food was amazing as well and there was so much food that we could have brought 2 more people!
Spa was lovely but it was hard to book! We booked treatments the first day we arrived but they could not schedule us until the second last day! So book before you arrived! They have a honeymoon special where they throw in a free 30 min head and shoulder massage and then 20% off on your other treatments.
Another bonus was having your own reef to swim in outside your villa. They provided life vests, fins, masks and snorkels. All you need to do is gear up and jump into the ocean! (They do provide a floaty foam bed for you so you dont need to bring your own in order to lounge in the pool!-- Funny how we saw people bring their own inflatable float beds and even a raft!)
Spouse and I did several dive trips while we were there. Excellent service at the dive centre and well, the water-- there are no words. We saw eels, turtles, baby shark (we saw some by the house reef as well). It was a beautiful place to dive at and the dive centre made sure we did not go to the same place twice. The dive centre was full-service--They bring all the equipment you need onto the jetty and set it up for you (you just need to suit up and dive!). There wasnt much divers during our stay, so everytime we dive, we had our own instructor/dive guide with us. Max at one time for us was with another couple. We felt quite safe while we were diving there as we were well taken care of!
Did night fishing as well. Spent two hours on the boat which spouse and I did not get any fishes at all. Other couples all caught something and the restaurant will turn your catch into your lunch or dinner the next day!
Dont expect too much from the wi-fi internet though. We found out that wi-fi was brought in only a year ago to Maldives and it remains quite slow.
Spouse and I end up moving to the island on our last night to stay in the jet pool villa and sadly, it was such a big contrast. The furnishing and the room itself was worn down and needed some fixing up. (We had trouble even opening the closet). And because it was on the island, there were ants and geckos (which are both common for island resorts). Maybe we were just too spoiled from living in the IOVs.
Beware of the Maldivian sun! Even the morning rays are stronger than what it looks like. Spouse and I got quite tanned on the first day from walking around for only 2 hours while we were waiting to get check-in.
And if you have a later flight to leave Male, dont worry!! The hotel/airport arranges tour guides to take you around Male for some sightseeing before you leave. Spouse and I had a 2:30am flight and wondered what we were going to do once we get back to Male for so many hours. A tour guide took us around and showed us all the important monuments and a good place for dinner. The touring was free of charge but we felt compelled to tip him as he took us around for 4 hours! Only slight negative was when the tour guide took us to the "biggest" (overpriced) souvenir shop-- I imagine that was common and that was how they make a living as we saw a lot of other tourists and tour guides there as well. It is not a good sign when you enter a shop and they offer you "free" bottled water or pop of your choice! Just remember to bargain!
I hope Angsana will hold some more promotions and special pricing so we can go back again!
