During a two week stay in Playa we frequented La Marejada's restaurant for cold mojitos and fresh food nearly every other night! Through which we had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Chelsea and Rahul(sorry if I spelt your name wrong buddy!) whom were happy to chat surf, local amenities and general day to day life in playa. The food is very reasonably priced, drinks are refreshing and the company is always considerate and happy. It is located just off of one of the public beach accesses just steps from the surf making it an ideal and relaxing setting. It is definitely somewhere I will go out of my way to send friends an family visiting PG!
La marejada was recommended to us by our neighbours and we were not disappointed. Our first experience was just stopping in and getting drinks (they let us come in even though they appeared to be closing - very much appreciated). The next time we stopped in for lunch and my boyfriend and I both had tacos and we were very happy with what was on or plates. Dinner is also great. During our stay I had the steak, tuna tartar, and went in for Sunday sushi night. The tacos and tuna tartar were probably my favourite things I tried there. The sushi was ok (I'm half japanese so I've been spoiled with sushi). But for not having an old japanese man at the helm it was pretty good.
Most of our encounters with the staff were with Chelsea and Raoul (hope I'm not butchering the spelling...). They always asked how we were and remembered us when we came in which made us feel at home. The other staff members were always smiling and really seemed to enjoy being there.
Thanks for the great times!
The people who run it are very nice. They are experiencing water rationing so the water turns off at a specific time every night. One night it was much earlier than expected and we couldn't take much needed showers. With out us asking they comped us a few things.
NO safes in room.
I spent three nights at La Marejada last week and had a wonderful stay. Gail and Marco (the owners) are friendly hosts and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Playa Grande. There are only 8 rooms at the hotel, and I imagine all are pretty much identical, except some are on the first floor and others are on the second floor. We had a first floor room, furthest away from the restaurant/bar, and were very happy with the accommodations. Although we didn’t spend much time in the room, the shower got nice and hot, the AC was ice cold, and the beds were very comfortable. There is a nice pool area with a garden and hammocks and the beach is a three minute walk down the road. La Marejada isn’t a luxury resort, but the hotel is quiet, clean, and secure and has all that you need for a low key and relaxing stay. You can rent bike and surf boards at the hotel and Gail can assist in setting up surf lessons, tours, taxis, etc. The restaurant onsite is very good and worth trying, even if you aren’t a guest at the hotel. We also enjoyed eating at Rip Jack, which is right next door/practically connected (despite what the Trip Advisor map shows) and Las Tortugas, which is located right off the beach and within easy walking distance.
A few tips – there isn’t a ton to do in Playa Grande and pretty much everything revolves around the beach/surfing. As a result, this is an early to bed, early to rise sort of place. Take a surf lesson, but beware that the waves can be tough for beginners and the rip tide is no joke (while the lineup at Tamarindo was ridiculously crowded, I found the waves there to be far easier to manage). Definitely rent a bike to get around – the cost is minimal and it will make exploring a lot easier. There are some interesting things to see “up the hill” and also out in the Palm Beach Estates area, but both would be a long walk, especially in the midday heat. In addition to the bikes and boards at La Marejada, Los Frijoles (right up the street), has a lot of bikes/boards/beach toys for rent and the people there are also super nice. Bring lots of cash – there are no/limited ATMs in Playa Grande and traveler checks aren’t accepted anywhere in the area (I’ll discuss this aggravating point in a separate post).
Thanks again Gail and Marco – I hope to see you again soon!
Great value. Great location. The beach is a very short walk right from the room. Cold A/C, hot showers and very clean rooms. I loved the table and chairs on the porch, relaxing in the hammocks and pool, and the restaurant was delicious and nutritious.
