Remember that line from ads of decades ago? On the spur of the moment on our final days on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, we delved into the Lonely Planet guidebook and found an enthusiastic little review for Sabina's inn, in the tiny village of Hatillo, close to Dominical (itself pretty small!). We drove to the imposing gate and used to intercom to ask Sabina if she had room for two that evening. She did, and she walked down from somewhere in her large gardens to greet us. We didn't take the luggage out of the vehicle for 2-1/2 hours, while Sabina took us all around the property, showing us her flowers and her orchards - star fruit, cacao, papayas, coconuts, and more. She offered us, gratis, mango juice she made herself. It matched the exquisite quality of the chocolate that she makes herself from scratch (from cacao pods) and serves at breakfast. We melded her stories and ours for hours that day and the next. At 62 years of age, if I recall correctly, she has restarted marathon running after a 3-year break. She arranged in a flash our tour the next day at Hacienda Baru (recommended - our guide, Pedro, was extremely knowledgeable). As a side benefit, the other guests are as interesting as we hope we are.
