We were lucky to have been recommended by a local to stay here and by far it was the best place!! The beach, the view, the hosts, the food, the location and all the coconuts you can eat/drink was simply amazing! It's easy to find and not too far from the wharf. The taxi fare will cost you around $20-$30WST (always best to negotiate a price before you jump in). Buses are frequent and cheap so there is no need to rent a vehicle unless you plan on touring the whole island. For one night the charge is $50WST per person, can't get any cheaper than that especially when it includes yummy breakfast and dinner...lunch is not normally included but the hosts provided it for us anyway!! The beach fales were comfy (comes with mattresses and mosquito nets) and the shared toilets/showers were clean and the water doesn't run out! I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who is looking to stay in Savaii and we will definitely go back!

We went to Joelans (Lano Beach, Savaii) after reading all these reviews and found out for ourselves - this place is really, really special! Its not just the place, its the people. Falesoa and Sione are the parents.Their kids, including the famous 12 year old Joelan, and their very cute grandchildren make Joelans a wonderful, very Samoan experience - complete with a bunch of very happy and healthy dogs and a pig who loves to be scratched!!!
Our fales (both open and enclosed) were clean and comfortable. The facilities are basic but well kept and the lagoon is gorgeous, complete with waves lapping under the fales at high tide and big waves crashing on the reef far away.
Falesoa is a fantastic cook - if you are lucky you will get her amazing chicken and eggplant dish! Sione catches fresh fish and Falesoa cooks it to perfection. You wont go hungry here!!!
We loved our time at Joelans - from the moment we hopped off the bus we were welcomed and encouraged to enjoy ourselves. We travelled the whole of Savaii but ended up back at Joelans because it was the friendliest and best value. This place and these people are really special....
I couldnt find contact details for these guys before we left, but have been assured they are happy to hear from people who want to book - joelanbeachfales@mail.com or phone 7580979, or 7229588.

Room tip: open fales have pull down walls which keep the weather out and provide privacy - dont be put off by their simplicity - it really works!

I read about this property at LP's Samoa forum and decided to give it a try. It's easy to find it once you get off the boat at Saleologa and get rid of all the taxi drivers. Just take any bus to Lano beach, and the passengers or the driver will tell you where to get off. It's about 1,5 km after the Lano Primary School sign on the left of the road.
The owners will do their best to make you feel welcome. Fales are quite nice and the beach is gorgeous. Just make sure you take ear plugs if you don't like to get up early, as the property is full of children and dogs. Food is typical Samoan, and you need to keep an open mind. Lots of breadfruit and taro. Water is free, and if you'd like sodas or beer, you need to walk to the shop down the road. Forget about internet and mobile phone reception.
I loved this place, stayed for 2 days and came back after a horrible experience at Manase beach. Just a shame that my 3rd night was spoilt by a bunch of vandals from the local phone company, who were partying until 2am, but it was not the hotel's fault.

Room tip: Any of them

Joelane’s is the best place we have stayed during our whole 3 week Samoa trip, which we did in September.

Right at our arrival we were welcomed with a great coconut and a friendly talk to the owner’s wife. And it got even better: There was free coconuts and free bananas the whole day! And to top that, you get breakfast, lunch (!) and dinner plus accommodation for only 50 Tala. That was by far the cheapest we saw on our whole trip. Normally you only get breakfast and dinner but the owner told us she doesn’t want her guests to be hungry and that she wants everyone to leave with a big belly. And she achieved her goal. The food was great Samoan cuisine, taro and coconut cream and lots of fresh fruit and fresh fish which they catched in the afternoon.

They also have a canoe you can just take to paddle out, a surfboard and a volleyball net. The fale we stayed in was nice and big. The toilets and showers also were alright. But the best was the lovely family and the great food. We just relaxed on the nice beach and played with the little pig “penichio” they have there. : )

We would love to come back, it was just great and we already really miss “our” little pig and the easy live on the beach.

Our stay at Joelan was the highlight of our trip to Samoa. We stayed at a number of other beach fales on our trip and none could compare. The simple fales are constructed in traditional style and are much more attractive that others found on Upolu. The hosts (Falesoa and Sione) are very welcoming and helpful. Sione will even take you on a round Savai'i tour for only WST$50/person - which is very reasonable. The food was great, beach superb, and location within a village excellent. As long as you don't mind the shared shower/toilet block, water underneath your fale at high tide, and the occassional dog noise I would thoroughly recommend a stay at Joelan.
