Seems like there is a whole cross section of reviews on this place, but our experience was nothing short of wonderful ! We were here in April of 2012 for one night. We picked this place for fun, we were just the two of us on a couple vacation.
As other reviews stated, the grounds are beautiful. There are gardens, and the Frank Lloyd Wright influenced architecture truly is one of a kind. We, by pure dumb luck, got a room in the Ocatilla Building. Reading more on the hotel and other reviews, I have since learned that this is a brand new building in the hotel that opened only a few years ago. Our room was very spacious, had a great big beautiful bathroom with separate tub and shower and great view of the pool.
There are apparently several different pools on the property - this one seemed dedicated to the Ocatilla building and whatever the adjacent, older structure was called. We practically had it to ourselves (stayed over a Sunday night). The next day, my boyfriend had to work at his Phoenix office, so I parked it by the pool and had a truly wonderful day. I had the pool nearly to myself, and took only a few breaks to go back to my hotel room for a few things. I felt secure simply leaving my things on my towel, there was little to no theft risk. Major pluses I thought were:
-Fantastic, free wi-fi. It worked great by the pool
-Pool towels provided at the pool.
-Tons of nice lawn chairs available
-Simply beautiful grounds.
-They allowed a late check out of 2 pm, which was great since my flight wasn't till 5.
I should mention, we tagged my boyfriends company, which is a large, fortune 20 company on our reservation when we made it. It's very likely that the free internet, late checkout and a few other perks that I enjoyed were simply part of that 'status' being added to the reservation, but I have no idea whether or not that was the case.
After I checked out, I had a burger at Frank's, or whatever their 'casual' dining location is in the hotel. It was pretty $$, but what do you expect at a resort when you are on vacation? It was no more over $$ than any other resort I have been to, and honestly, if anything, was more on the reasonable side. Again, reading other reviews, it seems like a number of people didn't have near the great experience that I did, but I can't speak for them. I enjoyed a very relaxing weekend, and found the property to be amongst the nicest I have visited.
