I'm a big Hilton fan and also have a soft spot for older hotels, so I was hoping to be wowed by Hilton Checkers. Everything was OK, but nothing was special, which left me a bit underwhelmed. It is a smaller, older hotel, with some nice stonework, etc. My room was large, spacious and clean - which is priority one - so they met that important criteria. Also, on the positive side, while the bar is small, it is stylish and the bartenders were very welcoming. Additionally, the food was quite good and the location downtown is convenient. What was missing from the whole experience was the extra touches that can make an older hotel special. For example, there are doormen, but they only opened the door for me on the day I arrived. Every other time I exited or returned, they were hanging out talking to each other, indifferent to me arrival or departure. Yes, I can open a door for myself. But what's the point of having doormen who don't open the door for you or ask if you need a cab, directions, etc. - particularly in an older hotel with a small lobby - where a little extra attention would go a long way towards erasing any of the hotel's shortcomings. Overall, this is an OK place to stay downtown, but not as special as it could be.
