The New Kansan Motel is dirty, and apparently charges some guests by the ½ day or less. They charged me $58/night, after tax. I sent an email to try to get a lower rate, and the email went unreturned. I called a few days after that and tried to get a lower rate, but they would not budge. After that telephone request for a lower rate, the woman hung up and dismissed me without saying goodbye. I called again to make a reservation, and a man said to just “show up,” and they would have a room. I booked the room ONLY because it was within walking distance to the conference center at which I was having training. I booked at night, and the manager made no mention of the massive construction project behind the hotel. The motel is right by the road, so as I sit here, I can hear the engine noise of almost every vehicle on Foothill Drive. Add to that the three excavators, couple of payloaders, and hydraulic chisels that are ADJACENT to the hotel doing road work starting at 6:30 am. When the hydraulic machines weren’t pounding the ground, neighbors were pounding the walls. I smoke outside (even though these are all smoking rooms) and have watched several couples check in and out after a few hour tryst, after which, the resident management walks into the room without cleaning supplies, does a 20 minute change of necessities, and re-rents the room. I have the feeling this is locally known as an hourly motel. The air conditioner in the room is loaded with what looks like black soot, as are the upper reaches of the shower. Having lived in Florida (post-hurricanes), I know this as black mold. The toilet is cramped in a space so tight you have to pull your pants down and back into it. The TV had no power button and other buttons didn’t work, so TV could only be controlled by remote. There was a desk area that was so ill-designed that you could not even get or sit in it without levitating. In the three nights I spent here, the bed did not get made. There were no fresh towels provided. Nothing but noise, filth, shady traffic, and curtains that barely cover the windows. Not enough outlets for cell phone charger and laptop. The only thing that could have made this motel worse (besides the price for services/quality) would have been insects (roaches, etc.). While I did notice a few ants, and felt like bugs were crawling on me just because of the character of this motel, I did not notice any other bugs. Parking is also very limited/tricky. The only redeeming quality is the landscaping, which was tasteful and well-selected.
Management's solution to resolving these concerns was to tell me that I was--at no point--under any obligation to stay.
Stay here only if your budget cannot afford the extra $30/night for the much-superior cleanliness, peace of mind, and safety of other hotels within 5 miles.
