When we booked, we did not realize that the front desk closes at 8 pm. We stopped for dinner along our route and were surprised by a phone call at 7 pm saying that the front desk person was going home for the day, and we would have to let ourselves in. While the procedure for late check in worked fine (key in lock box, emailed code), I really had no idea that there would be no one to greet us or help us get settled at a place we paid $240 to stay at for one night. Yes, I expect the person to do their job and stay until the end of their shift. That is not unreasonable.

The room was very hot. Even thought it was 62 degrees outside, the room was at least 75 during our stay, even at night. The radio buzzed when set on the MP3 setting, so we had to turn it to alarm even though we didn't want an alarm. So while we were down at breakfast, the radio goes off very loudly from our room.

Fix the fireplaces so that they actually show a flame but also don't overheat the room. Take the "Women are Fat" book off the mantel in room 7. Yep, the two books provided on the mantel are the Symposium and a book about women's fat cells. Seriously.

We chose this hotel because it was rated as one of the most romantic hotels in Santa Cruz. It is beautiful, no doubt, gorgeous. But so many annoyances do not make it very romantic. Good coffee and oatmeal in the morning.

Room tip: Just know that the deluxe space tubs are definitely one person only

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your recent stay. I am glad you enjoyed our beautiful location, but was sorry you were disappointed in some aspects of our service. We strive to ensure that our guests receive the utmost in hospitality, and I apologize that we missed the mark on this occasion.

The employee who was staffing the front desk that evening called you in advance to explain our late arrival schedule, noting she would be leaving at 8 p.m. Her punched time-clock records verify she did leave at that time. Although we would have liked to welcome you personally, I was happy to learn you found our late night check-in process an easy one.

Santa Cruz is often chilly at night, so we leave the fireplace on low for our late arriving guests. I apologize if you found the room too warm and the alarm clock irritating; both have now been checked by our maintenance team.

Thank you again for writing. On your next visit to Santa Cruz, I hope you will give us another chance.

Warmly,
Matt Conceicao
Manager, West Cliff Inn

We stayed in Santa Cruz so that we could tour the Botanical Gardens. We enjoyed the ocean front trail next to the bed and breakfast. We liked staying in Room 3 and looking at the ocean. They offer some nice package deals on their website. We tried the package with a $50 dining certificate to the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola. It was nice but plan on spending at least $50 more dollars if you dine there. It was very convenient to park at the hotel. We tried driving downtown but found parking impossible so we went back to the hotel.

Room tip: Look at their website and talk to the staff to pick the type and price of room that you prefer.

Staying at the West Cliff Inn in Santa Cruz was an excellent choice for us. We stayed in the Little Beach Bungalow and found it delightful, clean, well appointed and just plain fun. It was perfect for a couple. As you drive up to The West Cliff Inn the Bungalow is in the back along side a private road which leads to condos and a small trailer court, all clean and new. It is within easy walking distance to the Pier and the downtown shops along the beach. We went down for dinner and watched the volleyball games on the beach that evening. Was it quiet? YES. The staff were very helpful upon check-in and showed us where the breakfast was the next morning. The Inn is a beautiful and restored home/mansion with contemporary accents throughout. The breakfast was a FULL homemade breakfast with quiche, fresh fruits, oatmeal and fruit combination, bacon, coffees, teas, etc...It was divine! If we are in the area again we will most definitely return. Quit looking now and just book it!

Room tip: If you need AC at night this is not the place for you. We kept the window open and felt secure doing it. The beach air keeps things cool at night.

Wonderful retreat from another time. Really a B & B not a hotel . The staff is very guest orientated. Matt and Lauren were superb. Great recommendations for restaurants. The breakfast was a full breakfast. Started about 8: 30 which for those traveling from eastern time zones a little later than you might be used to. Complementary wine and cheese in the evening was a nice touch. The wine was nothing special but very drinkable. Views from the porch very nice however other rooms do not share the sane view so don't hesitate to ask for atop with a view and they will. Accommodate you if they can. No Air but you would never miss it it is the California Coast. Great place we will visit again.

A short stay but enough time to spot a real gem. Little touches like jars of cookies, free afternoon wine and coffee, all presented with style and charm, make this an excellent b&b offer. Well positioned in town, the view is only slightly compromised by the more recently built hotel across the road.
