We stayed at the Sunset Inn for two nights and found the experience rather disappointing. Thinking that we would give ourselves a bit of luxury, we booked a suite with a spa and fireplace for $195/night. The suite was very large and airy, but plain to the point of ugliness. Moreover, it was located about 6 feet from Mission Street, which is very busy, and although the street noise was muffled with the windows and door closed, it was still more than a little audible. Of course we were not told this when we booked. We intended to book just a normal room, but the owner described the suite and it sounded so nice we decided to spend the extra money (about double the price). There was a fireplace, but you were only supposed to burn one of those artificial logs in it. A small log was provided, but nowhere in the room were there any matches. The heating unit was by the front door, and there was no unit at all in the separate bedroom, which was in the back. It wasn't until the next day that we discovered an unlabeled switch that turned on a fan which moved air from the living room into the bedroom by means of a noisy vent. There was a coffee pot in the room, and there were packets of sugar, etc., but no coffee. When we called to ask why there was no coffee we were told that since they couldn't predict whether guests would like regular coffee, decaf, or tea, that they didn't put any at all in the room until the guests called to ask for what they wanted. Of course no such thing was told to us when we checked in and there was no information in the hotel's in-room information. Two packets of cheap coffee were delivered later. We looked in vain for a box of tissues, and had to call to ask for one. There was no hair dryer, and when we called to ask about that, we were told that ours was the only room without one, but that they had a "loaner" they could give us. Breakfast was offered but it didn't even look tempting. Just muffins, etc., in plastic packaging. Finally, when we checked out, I think this may be the only time when leaving a hotel of any sort that the owner didn't even bother to ask if we enjoyed our stay. She just handed us the receipt. The bottom line is that the Sunset Inn is not at all a nice place to stay, and overpiced, at least for this suite. Everything is done very cheaply, and it really shows. On the plus side, everything was clean, and the location is convenient (although for us the noise negated the advantage of the location). We advise you to find somewhere else to stay when you visit Santa Cruz.
