I had a wonderful stay at the Pier Hotel. It's a wonderful older hotel, beautifully quaint and apparently one of the historic structures in St. Pete's downtown district. Evening cocktails were fun, and the location can't be beaten. Talk about lovely.
The wait staff and reception were all very pleasant and helpful, and even offered some recommendations when we were stumped for what to do.
The continental breakfast is a nice touch, but it needed some variety. It was like a carbohydrate fiesta! Bagels, toast, biscuits and gravy. I wanted a piece of fruit to counterbalance that madness.
Because the hotel is a historic structure that hasn't been renovated recently, that comes with some costs. The rooms are a little on the smallish side. A little more frustrating was the bathroom, which was microscopic -- barely enough room for a person to stand between the sink and the toilet.
The air conditioning is through window units; ours wasn't powerful enough to keep the room cool all night. I would really dial down the temperature if it were a summer stay.
At the end of the day, I would absolutely go back. I'm a frequent traveler and I like hotels that make me feel like a welcome guest. But if you go, keep in mind the caveats.
