I am a returning guest to OR. Having stayed at Sandalfoot (very good condominium complex too) and Sundial before, since I discovered Ocean's Reach, I made it my Sanibel's favourite and only vacation location.
Being at OR is enjoyable whether you are there with friends, family, as a couple for a romantic "tête à tête", or even alone. I've met several ladies that come to OR on their own and are as happy to be there as young families or couples. Older people read poolside or on the beach and kids happily splash around in the pool (very nice, beachside) or jump in the pool (not always paying attention where they jump which is sad. I am particularely sensible to this, as 10 years ago a good friend of mine - 25 years old at that time - got paralized because a 8 year old kid jumped into a pool and landed on her back, as she was swimming, which broke her spine. The kid's carelessness and his parents not paying attention to him totally ruined my friend's life. So parents, please teach your kids to pay attention to swimmers and respect other human beings. The no dive sign has to be respected but please also don't jump on people).
Sanibel is a wonderful Island and I am glad that the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf didn't spoil its beautiful beaches (although some oil particles are now clearly visible on the white sand beach or on shells/blackened sanddollars). You can enjoy its bicycle trails, its nature including dolphins and alligators (the latter even on golf courses), birdwatch, collect shells (there are so many, that they are even used as pavement / pebbles in parking lots on the island) , swim, windsurf, canoe in the bay, go deep sea fishing or fish directly on the beach in front of OR (I even saw some amateur fishermen catch baby hammerheads twice! And you don't feel like going swimming in the Gulf afterwards... in case "mummy o daddy" hammerhead are swimming close by!).
If you like eating, Sanibel & Captiva restaurant's choice is great, with many nice places serving everything from hamburgers, pizza, spareribs, huge cakes, to Grouper, Mahi mahi, lobster, snapper or fish tacos. I'll cite the Lazy Flamingo, Doc Ford, Bubble Room, George & Wendy, Fish house, Gramma Dot, etc etc. Besides, with well appointed condos such as OR, you can either shop at Publix before crossing Sanibel bridge or on Sanibel at Bailey's or Jerry and cook your favourite meals or grab one at their deli sections.
Finally, the staff at OR is the kindest I've encountered on Sanibel. Always there to help, write a great blog or help you with any kind of request (restaurants, cruises, tours, rentals). Thanks to you ALL!!!
Now, I have to cite some improvement areas (as otherwise, with only positive comments, all tripadvisors readers will come to OR and I'll have to book years in advance!!!) : beach chairs provided with the condo are just regular US beach chairs, no loungers. Loungers are only available by the pool and you can't take them to the beach. And believe me, to rest on a lounge on the beach IS HEAVENLY, so why wouldn't OR condo owners buy 1-2 foldable loungers (that are even less expensive and lighter to carry than beach chairs and can be found anywhere : CVS, Walgreens, Kmart, Walmart, etc). Also on the screened balconies, only one "clever" owner of a 1BR unit in building 2 (second floor) was smart enough to buy a comfy padded lounge chair. This idea should be copied by other owners...
Cleanliness / decor : some owners have better taste than others and are keener to replace their furniture / carpets than others. So you might find very pretty units in buildings 1 and 2 or others less cared for such as 4c4. If you happen to have to push over one carpet, you might find a lot of dust underneath (not always easy for cleaners to pay attention to detail during a busy season). I also heard a guest complain about old appliances in some units.
Last but not least, renting outside school holidays in Winter / spring or during the summer (hurricane season in Florida) means less crowds at the pool, on the beach and even at restaurants on the Island. However, since prices are lower from the end of April until just before Xmas, that's also when OR condos are maintained and you can expect some nuisance (furniture changed; carpets industrially cleaned which can be pretty noisy, new TV system installed, walls painted or bug control spraying in units occurs).
Look at their website : plenty of condos interiors pictures to chose yours! All have great gulf view...
