If this hotel had cost $59 a night, I'd feel a lot less violated. But it was $179 a night. Way too expensive for what it was. Seriously. For the same price you can stay at the lovely New England bed and breakfast down the block called the Three Chimney's Inn. Much nicer, and the breakfast spread was way better. The wedding we were in Durham for was at Three Chimney's. They did an excellent job and for the first time ever I can say the food at a wedding was fantastic. Really really tasty.
When we arrived, check in was fine, but the room and halls were easily 85 degrees. That would have been fine, I suppose, if it had been a cold New Hampshire fall day. But it was 60 out. We couldn't get the thermostat to work in our room, so we ran the a/c all weekend. Excellent use of energy. The front desk girl said she would have the manager come by. That never happened. Might have something to do with the fact that she obviously did not believe us when we told her the thermostat wasn't working. Excellent service on that front. Appreciated. Again, way over priced. Expect some level of service for that kind of money. I wasn’t looking for 5 star, just some basic level of service.
The bed was a very small double. The rooms themselves were updated and relatively clean, with new flat screen TVs, but also small. Plenty of parking. Water pressure in the shower was pretty good, but the tub was clogged and didn't drain well. Lighting was poor.
The free breakfast was about what you'd expect for free from a Holiday Inn. Edible mostly. Convenient. And at that price, at least we got something out of it.
Circle K across the street was great for late night snacks/beverages. Down on the main drag where all the action is you can find Libby's bar and grill. Great place for lunch and dinner. Good food, good service. But it is a bar so there can be a bar crowd. If you can deal with that, it's well worth the trip. We ate there both nights of our stay. Great desserts too.
