Good base camp campground - clean and fairly well laid-out. I agree with the other posters that the bathroom facilities were not enough - this is the first time I have ever heard that the GUYS had to wait in line in the men's room. The other bathrooms in the information center are generally pretty well overrun by hikers from the parking lot. ADK should put some pit or composting toilets in the lot for hikers. Even if there was another set of composting toilets in the campground, it would have relieved a lot of the stress on the small facilities.
Also, again in agreement with the other poster - regardless of the 10 p.m. quiet hours, there was a large group who were talking and yelling well past ten. But they did send round a host to enforce the quiet hours - I just think she was generally ignored by this bunch. They weren't the scary kind of boisterous-loud - they were just laughing and talking all night long. After a long day hiking to wake up every ten minutes was a little frustrating. The second night they calmed down, though. But this is a small campground so you can hear just about everything - so courtesy counts.
The location is great. Several good trailheads from here. Heart lake is gorgeous and nice for swimming. The Loj runs free nature programs for families.
Next year I think we will get one of the lean-tos away from the main camping area. But that will mean walking to and from the car to carry food in and out (you cannot leave food at your site unless it is in approved bear cannisters - and they are tiny.)
All in all a nice place to camp, with no big rigs, and friendly, knowledgeable staff. The Loj itself looks like it would be a fun place to stay, and the canvas cabins were big enough for a small family.
