Gabi and Norbert to begin with are perfect German hosts, and hold a very high standard for attention to detail, immaculate condition of each room and the lodge and presentation. But beyond that, every room is quite spacious and well and thoughtfully apportioned.
The Lodge sits on top of a hill and on over a hundred acres just outside of Smithers, so there is a beautiful view of the valley and the stunning mountains surrounding it. Our room, the Eagle's Nest on the second floor, looked across the Hudson Bay Mountain, not only a gorgeous view but also their local ski mountain. We got there at an off hour in an off season- and so got to peek through the other rooms, all of which were beautifully put together.
Two very friendly dogs welcomes us on arrival, and we entered this lodge made of incredible, hand cut and peeled logs, but finished with handiwork which added elegance to a rustic setting. Breakfast in the morning was typical European in its fare- but exceptionally well designed and presented. Gabi brought fresh yogurt with raspberries buth mixed in and decorating the top, three kids of fresh bread including croissants, fresh butter and homemade jam, a perfectly arranged selection of meats and cheeses, and a truly gorgeous arrangement of fruits- peaches, pineapple, apple...even my six and a half foot husband more accustomed to eggs or bottomless bowls of cereal was well sated!
Before we left we took a long walk up the country road on which the lodge is situated. We came back to see Norbert working outside, by the neat and clean chicken coop from which they source their fresh eggs for baking and other cooking, the barn he is building. Even with projects underway everything about the property was neat and clean. What a wonderful place they call home.
We would love to come back to visit another time.
