We stayed at the Thurrock Travelodge for almost a week. The receptionist expressed surprise at the length of time, which worried us - but it needn't have done.
Our first impressions weren't great. It is very much on a busy service area (with all the associated unwelcoming parking warnings), reached by a small side door attached to the services. However, the staff gave us a very warm and friendly welcome. We travelled with our children and dog and they were lovely to all right the way through.
When we reached our room, I was really pleasantly surprised. It was spacious and backed onto the lake. You wouldn't have known, once in the room, that you were in a service station at all. The lake was frozen when we got there and we enjoyed watching all the birds sitting on it!
The TV was basic, with only 5 channels (is anyone still on analogue?!) but there were good tea making facilities and the staff seemed happy to replenish the tea and coffee whenever we asked. The room was a bit cold at first but when we told reception they helpfully gave us an extra heater which we kept for the duration of our stay. Later in the week when the weather improved, you could open the window for a bit of fresh air and even then it was not too noisy.
We were down the end of a corridor so we rarely heard other guests either. The housekeeping staff were also lovely and very helpful.
Considering that for some nights of our stay this Travelodge was only £15, you couldn't ask for a better bargain. The only pain in the neck was that the children had an event on in Dartford every day and I hadn't factored in the awful hassle of getting over the bridge constantly. Other than that, the location is very convenient; we ate at the Lakeside Shopping Centre some nights and other nights at the retail parks. All are just a stone's throw away - not walkable because of the location, but only minutes in the car. There are also some handy (if overpriced) outlets on site at the services, including an M&S, so we could pop down for bread or milk easily.
We are staying here again later in March and if the staff are half as nice, I will look forward to it. Travelodges are fairly standard fare, but this is one of the best I've stayed in.
Ask for one backing onto the lake.
