san juan del sur is a pretty cool place. a beautiful bay and the city has some nightlife but hardly overbearing. the beach in town isn't all that for swimming but travel a few minutes north or south and you can chose from several beautiful very chill beaches. ask locally which beach is being worked by the little bandito's with machetes. the local cops drive nice rigs and look real official but they don't do anything. they need to fix that. other than that i really enjoyed my 3 weeks in this town. i rented a motorcycle and went all over discovering deserted coves, spearfishing, body surfing and so forth. on a fishing charter we had a whale with a baby 20 feet from our boat. 20 feet. as far as hotels you may want to avoid them. i went from $30 a night in a hotel that didn't have 3 things i was paying for: wifi, hot water and ac. apartment rentals abound. i went to an apartment for $70 a week, 4 blocks from the waterfront, with wifi that actually worked and had a fully equipped kitchen. no hot water (you don't need it) and no ac (you don't need it, nites are cool and a fan is fine) and the place was quiet. quiet in this town is hard to find. sjds is a virtual kennel so choose carefully if you want some sleep. all in all though i really liked my stay. other than that i also stayed in las penitas to the north and that was excellent as well but very quiet.
