“A very aptly named B&B. Our only disappointment -- leaving!”
Avonlea, Jewel of the Sea is very aptly named. The location is perfect. The views are second to none, as far as I'm concerned and the proximity to town is ideal because it's not right in the thick of traffic, but it's close enough to be convenient to the ferry, the (Wednesday) farmer's market, shopping, eating, etc.
My husband and I stayed in the Ruby room for three nights. At first glance when we arrived it seemed a bit small, but, in fact, there was plenty of room for all our things and then some. I should note that we had very small luggage carriers -- backpacks, to be exact.
I would advise against bringing a large suitcase if you are staying in Ruby as that will take up quite a bit of room and might be uncomfortable. What's more, I'm not sure I'd want to stay in the room for more than two or three nights as it might get a bit cramped with all the things one would need for a longer stay. Do bear that in mind when making a reservation for an extended stay.
As for the room's amenities, the bed was insanely comfortable and the shower was awesome. We had plenty of clean towels and the atmosphere with respect to taking beach chairs, extra beach towels was TOTALLY relaxed. No one is looking over your shoulder there, which is such a pleasure.
I was a bit surprised not to find an alarm clock in the room, but I was told later that one is available upon request. It was also a bit unfortunate that the curtains in the room did not have ties to hold them back to take full advantage of the breathtaking view of the ocean, but that is easily rectified.
A major shout out to innkeeper Christy Zendt. She is an adorable delight! (Hope you're not embarrassed, Christy!) It is certainly because of her that the Avonlea is such a fabulous place to stay. Her breakfasts are wonderful with considerable variety; the cookies and other items she puts out for happy hour are delicious and she keeps the rooms all but spotless.
What's even more astonishing is that while we were there she was doing it all on her own. Christy truly puts her heart and soul into running the Avonlea and it shows.
It's just a marvelous, beautiful place and I highly recommend it for a short stay.
Ask for a room facing mainland Rhode Island to ensure that you get an ocean view.
