We visited the Horse Creek Inn during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, has we have for the past several years. It is a cute roadside place that looks as though it will be dark, cozy, and full of atmosphere from the outside. Stopping in on a weeknight for a glass of wine and an appetizer. we met the new owner sitting at the bar, who was proud of the improvements made since he and his family purchased the operation a year ago. They have definitely cleaned the place up a bit, removing the salad bar and freshening up the decor, albeit only minor changes. We ordered Chislic, purported to be a South Dakota specialty, deep-fried cubes of seasoned beef. The meat was so tough that we had trouble chewing it. I expected a bit better quality meat, if that is the only thing on the plate. Not sure if this is the way it's supposed to be, but the experience was not enjoyable at all.
My advice to the owners: invest in good quality ingredients, and charge more - people will pay it if it's good. I will not eat something just because it's cheap at a restaurant.
The other complaint would be - do something with the lighting in this place. Right when you walk in, there is a huge overhead light glaring right in your eyes in the foyer that lights up the entire bar area as well. There is zero ambiance. Invest in some recessed lighting that you can put on a dimmer. I do not want to sit in the bar relaxing with a glass of wine, and feel like I am being interrogated by the secret police with a bright light in my eyes.
Due to the cheap cut of meat on our appetizer and the total lack of ambience, we had one drink and left. I really wanted to like the place and stay for another glass of wine, but...oh well. Maybe next year.
