I've just returned from a week at the hotel, actually it was my forth or fifth stay here. The reason I go back is that really you get what you pay for and it is usually 50-75% cheaper than many of the other four star hotels on the Island. I paid around £400 for a week for sole use of a double room on an all inclusive basis. I've stayed in several of the other 4-5 stars on the island and although this ranks only (just) a little lower, it's clean, comfortable, generally friendly and for me traveling solo is £500 cheaper a week than most of the others.
I'll admit the service isn't always top notch, the restaurant a little busy and at times feels chaotic but when you compare the price, it's excellent really for what you get.
I find the rooms pretty much as you see on the website, clean and comfortable. Air con is also pretty good for Spanish hotels. The pool area is OK, the main hotel one doesn't get as much sunshine as the other pool by the apartments. There was always plenty of loungers, you do find you needed to move around a bit to catch the sun due to the design of the hotel. I tend to go to the beach in Maspalomas rather than stay at the hotel all day.
I didn't have any complaints about the food, it's all buffet style and beer and wine is on tap. The only problem I found is that during busy times there were knife and fork thieves. This was mostly at breakfast when the staff couldn't get around quick enough, you'd get up to get coffee or something and come back to find most of the place setting missing, presumably taken by other less patient guests. Meal times are not really a relaxing experience, but I find that with any all-inclusive buffet type restaurant.
What I did like was the rest of the all inclusive service, unlike a lot of other hotels where batches of food is made up you can order a number of things from the pool grill in the day for "free", such as toasties, steak baguettes or hamburger and chips. These are made up freshly to order and quickly dispatched. Non-branded spirits / wine / beer (San Miguel) are available self service or if you wanted a cocktail you could get this from the bar. You can pay 1-2 euro's more and upgrade you drinks if you wished but I never felt the need. As stated the all inclusive runs from 10am until 11pm for drinks. You can also get bottled water from the bar to take back to your room. I'm not sure if it is because I'm a repeat guest but I got sparkling wine and chocolates in my room too.
I always have an enjoyable stay here. You get good value for money there's nothing I'd really complain about. I like the location, staggering distance from the Yumbo at 4am, no hassles or fuss with anything. I prefer to get a room facing the street as it's a little quieter as the design of the hotel means that your "disco nap" between 9-11pm will be disturbed by the hotel entertainment. I've never ever sat through a "show" but the incessant playing of "put your hands up in the air" through the load speakers I hear though my sleep tells me that I probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway.
So will I go back... of course. It's only slightly more expensive than some outdated nasty apartment or bungalow. The quality is more than I'd expect for the money, the all inclusive and food (and drink) a bonus. I've stayed at both of the Riu Palace's, both Princess hotels in Playa/Maspalomas and the extra "quality" certainly wasn't the hundreds of pounds worth over what you pay to stay here. It does pay to shop around for this hotel as you nearly always find it 30% off on one of the websites.
If you are truly looking for high end then you'll need to fork out a heck of a lot more. I have no idea what people are complaining about... for a £50 or less a night room - get real.
This hotel is OK... really.
