I was hesitant after reading some reviews, but due to a Navy reunion we were attending next door, we had all booked the place out.
Upon entering, I breathed a sigh of relief.
I don't have champagne taste on a beer budget so I wasn't expecting the ritz.
But I was happy with what was supplied.
There was a kettle and tea and coffee and packets of biscuits (lovely extra) and these were replenished each day when the room was serviced.(they did a good job).
Lot's of hanging and drawer space.
An extra bed (single) , great for we often travel with our daughter and need a rollaway.
A table and chairs and a TV. One complaint about the tv though, as already mentioned, it's an old one and not digital which means no extra chanels.Getting back late at night, no access to the news etc. Yes in this day and age, they need new tv's or at least set top boxes.
The location was fabulous. on the tram line and bus line.
Macdonalds was down the road.
There was a bar and pokies next door.
There were a few things that didn't impress though and one was that breakfast finished at 8.30am. So if you couldn't get to breakfast between 7 and 8.30am (hot breakfast closed at 8.15am) then you had to go to Macdonalds. I have never stayed anywhere that serves breakfast only until 8.30am. Our group were late to bed through functions each night and so only made breakfast once.
I think they lost alot of money because of this.
The other thing that puzzled me was the run down state of some of the garden and I say some, because most of it was lovely. It was puzzling to see things like broken flower pots with dead plants in just sitting waiting to be tossed. A quick clean up would make the place look so much better.
The swimming pool was green and broken tiles etc and obviously like the flower pots, just sat waiting for something to be done. Again, fixing this would be a wonderful extra for a summer stay.
There was a slight smell that appeared to come out of the shower drain in the evening....nothing I couldn't bare though.
I did notice a smoke smell from the reception area (open from 7am until 8.30pm) which was not pleasent.
Overall I would describe this motel as being run by elderly staff whom obviously find it difficult to maintain the upkeep.
However because of the little extras, the affordable price (I wouldn't pay any more than $90 a night though) and the fantastic location (5 minutes from Glenelg), I would be happy to stay again.
I appreciate that this is a budget motel and that you get what you pay for but please make sure there's nothing else available if you have a choice.
I would like to be constructive...the sheets were clean...but the smell in my room was just dreadful. All I can think is that a smoker had the room before me and so, to hide that smell, room freshener was emptied in a litre bucket then the door was closed. The smell was so overpowering I could actually taste it.
In need of a make-over, there are large holes in the wall where salt damp has broken through from the shower. Sadly, and outside the control of management, a guest somewhere close by went to sleep and left their TV blaring. At 3.38am I tossed up whether to go sleep in the car. I wasn't brave enough to go outside and knock on doors, nor should I have to.
The TV is old and TV reception is poor, unless you are happy to watch your show scrolling from right to left.
The final straw was stepping into Reception on check out, only to be greeted by a wave of cigarette odour. I'm sorry because it sounds harsh but I'll spend a little more and won't go back.
We have stayed here lots of times. The motel is very ordinary, but quite comfortable with most things you need provided. On a main road, but with the units set back somewhat with little traffic noise. Units are getting to the point where they need some TLC but still acceptable for a short stay.
It's about 5 minutes walk from the tram stop with regular service to central Adelaide and to Glenelg so no problems with going out (or coming back) in the evening.
The swimming pool seems to be closed - whether for winter or longer, I can't say.
Needless to say it was definitely not the Hilton, but I like this hotel because of its location and ease of access to things like the train into the city and glenelg and restaurants close by and plenty of other public transport at the door step. Daily room services where they come in and re-make your bed and change rubbish bin liners were a good touch.
The Motel rooms are a little run down and showing their age but still quite comfortable. The televisions are ancient boxes with only around 6 analogue channels with poor reception, no digital channels, this was very disappointing in this day and age. The rooms looked like they have not had a refurbishment in well over 15 years, maybe had a lick of paint not too many years ago as that didnt look too bad.
After i had a shower and walked down the side of the bed next to the bathroom i got my socks wet, obviously the shower recess is leaking through the wall into the living area making the carpet wet on the other side of the shower wall, now i know why it is all water stained there.
Other than that the grounds were well kept and clean, but having a blown light on the stairs made it dangerous climbing the stairs at night time as you could not see them very well in the dark. The rooms had heating and cooling which is great for Adelaide.
The pool was out of action while I was there, not sure why but looked like it had been unused for quite some time now.
Managers were helpful, no problems there, office had long hours of 7am-8.30pm.
The cheap price makes everything ok, i definitely wouldnt pay any more than $90/night for it, but will definitely be returning on my next trip to adelaide.
