Every now and then, my husband and I take a long weekend and drive out to NYC to tear our son away from his applied mathematics studies at NYU. We usually stay downtown and this time we chose the Duane hotel (mainly because of the great restaurants in the area). This is a tiny hotel, with tiny rooms, but this mattered little since we spend minimal time cooped up inside. As always, we enjoyed watching our son devour the meals we treat him to, saw a play, and visited some friends in Brooklyn. Even with rainy weather we were having a great time... Until the last night at the hotel.
My husband woke up at about 5:00 in the morning miserably itchy and fighting a headache with some cold water. My hubby is a big boy and hardly complains, but he does have an allergic sensitivity to fumes and chemicals and it was really clear that something set him off. Since he didn’t bring any of his medication we decided to cut the day short and just drive back to Hartford. We rang our son, threw our clothes in the bags, and jumped in the car. We were back in Hartford by 9:00, and still ignorant of where my husband’s allergy attack came from, we had no complaints with our stay experience …
I called the Duane later today because I could not find my watch and thought I left it in the room given the hurry we left in. Just chatting with the person at the front desk, I found out that “potentially” my husband had this reaction because “the hotel had an exterminator work on the lower floors” the day before. OK???? So this was interesting. The hallways of the hotel are extremely tight and the room doors close together and maybe while fumigating an empty room the chemicals got into our room and irritated my husband’s condition? If so, understandable…but no! I found out that the exterminator was GOING INTO GUEST ROOMS, and “probably” was INSIDE OUR ROOM, and “maybe” SPRAYED SOME CHEMICAL?!!?!!! While I appreciated the honesty, I was both so SHOCKED, and so FURIOUS that I simply hung up the phone. I didn’t even want to know WHAT they were fumigating for!!!
Outside of the obvious invasion of privacy, who in their right mind would send an exterminator to fumigate a room that had ALL of our clothes, personal items and snacks out in the open???!!!!
THOUGHTLESS, NEGLIGENT, and BEYOND STUPID!!! Serious disregard for guests health.
I just emptied both of our bags at the dry cleaners to clean EVERYTHING. I will be sending the bill to the owners of the Duane hotel.
Rooms on lower floors vibrate with each passing subway directly underneath the hotel.

We do not fumigate at our hotel and we pride ourselves to ensure that all our guest rooms are always of the outmost cleanliness. No pest elimination service occured during your stay. Should any maintenance or deep cleaning is deemed necessary, it will always occur definitely at a time that does not impact our guest experience.
Also we pride ourselves in respecting the environment and we favor use of green or chemical free products within our Hotel operation.
Once again, thank you for your feedback and I am at your disposal should be interested in discussing further.
