My family and I (husband, 2 older boys aged 19 and 18 at the time, and our 2 smaller children, aged 8 and 5 at the time) stayed at the Royal Sea Cliff in May of 2010. It was clean, and it is right on the ocean, which is nice, although there is no beach. They have 2 pools, and a very small hot tub. The place is older, but well kept. It is a bit away from the busy part of town, but that is nice because it's quieter. The activities director was very helpful, and they have several little activities that are free. Also, for your young children, they have an "island explorer kit" that is a neat little backpack that has sunglasses, a pen, a few other items I don't remember, and an explorer guide that has interesting facts about Hawaii and it has activities in it, etc. My 8 year old absolutely loved it. Both of my kids still have the backpacks and they have held up really well.
There is much to be said for a large place, but one thing I didn't care for was that the pools weren't centrally located. They are next to the ocean, so I guess this is great for some people, but lugging all your pool necessities that far if your room is not close to that area is kind of annoying. I will say, however, the bathrooms by the pool are very clean. The rooms are condos, and apparently some of them are independently owned but managed by the facility. The room we had was mostly clean. The main bedroom had its own lanai with lounge chairs. This was nice. There was also a table and chairs on the main patio so you and your family could eat outside. The kitchen was well equipped and if you are trying to save money on food, having your own kitchen is a great option to help with that expense, particularly if you have a large family like ours.
One thing that happened, though, that gave me great stress was that the front desk charged our debit card twice for our stay, which showed 2 pending charges to our bank account of more than $1000 each. When I talked to the person at the desk about this, she was so rude and completely unprofessional. Finally a manager was able to contact my bank and get it reversed. This was pretty stressful, though. We had stayed our first 5 nights at a different place, and it was a Wyndham property for Worldmark owners. It went much more smoothly. We are not owners but friends of ours let us buy credits to stay there. Another thing nice about the Sea Cliff was the bbq area. They had several for use and this was a nice option as well, although again, like the pools, it was not centrally located, so not that convenient to use. The grounds are beautiful.
On a scale of 1-10, I would probably give this place a 5. Decent value for the money.
