Just returned from a visit to northern California, including Lava Beds National Monument, located near Tulelake, California. We stayed for just one night at Winema Lodge in Tulelake - 4th of July, but I wish it had been more. This is a hunting lodge (mid- October through mid-January, according to one of our hosts), but is also frequented by bird watchers, school groups, and visitors to Lava Beds National Monument (it is located directly between two national wildlife refuges, about a 10-minute drive from Lava Beds National Monument, less than two hours from the Mt. Shasta area, and only minutes from the Oregon border and the town of Merrill, Oregon) . The accommodations include a handful of motel-style rooms located in a separate building next to the lodge itself, as well as some rooms within the lodge with shared bathroom/showers. While the accommodations are no-frills, they are clean and comfortable. The "living room" of the lodge is what really wowed us, complete with fireplace, big-screen tv and couches, pool table, card/game table, board games, etc. - a very warm and homey feel. We played games, brought in dinner and drinks, and chatted with our hosts and other guests. We were even able to watch the Tulelake fireworks in the distance from the outdoor dining/sitting area in the yard of the lodge. Our hosts also provided a complimentary continental breakfast in the morning. A couple of friendly pets on the property add to its charm. I can't wait to visit again!!!
