I stayed here with a friend for a wedding in San Antonio. We reserved the room for two adults and two beds, and when we arrived at the hotel they only had a tiny room with one double bed. A double bed! That is small to sleep in with my wife, and especially way to tight of quarters for another full grown man! When they said they would send up a rollaway bed for use, which mind you is nowhere near as comfortable as a real bed, and then they had the audacity to CHARGE us for this 'bed.' This on its own was outrageous, but the room itself was absolutely tiny and when the rollaway bed was in there we could not open the door or walk around.

Had this been the only issue I might go back, because the location is great, but it took over twenty minutes to check in with a line of THREE!!! guests. There were people behind the desk, but nobody seemed to have a clue about what they were doing. Check out was even worse. The staff's incompetence was on full display, as the line was about thirty people long, with over an HOUR WAIT!!! That is not service that is a just TERRIBLE!!!

Room tip: Stay somewhere else!

Although this was my 4th stay at the Menger, it was the first visit for my cousins and they were blown away. It's like the best history refresher you could experience. Not only were our rooms in the old section but one of them was next to the Gen. William T. Sherman Suite. The beauty and elegance of this hotel has been so well maintained and the staff is competent. The Colonial Room is a wonderful restaurant and the best mango ice cream. You can't beat the location with the Alamo on one side and the Rivercenter Mall on the other and the Riverwalk just a short walk away. I've stayed at several other hotels in San Antonio but the Menger is my favorite by far.

Room tip: A room in the old section overlooking the street

Alejandro the security guard gave our party a wonderful tour of some of the original suites. He was well versed in the history and soooo generous with his time. You can tell he loves his job and the Menger. You should double his salary!

A stay at The Menger, right next to the Alamo is a must for at least one visit to San Antonio. The historic hotel is clean and comfortable with an excellent dining room. It is close to the River Walk and the convention center.

Room tip: Get a suite, the rooms are on the small side.

We stayed at the Menger hotel while attending a conference in San Antonio. It's location is great, next to the Alamo. The hotel bar is historic and the lobby is beautiful with authentic classic Victorian fittings,

However, the bedrooms also have Victorian fittings and plumbing. OK, so that's what you get in an historic hotel. However, the rooms are not clean, the beds are uncomfortable and the rooms are noisy from some badly installed air conditioning.

Next time I went to San Antonio I would stay elsewhere and visit the Menger to sample the atmosphere in the bar, lobby and restaurant.
