We booked this hotel early last summer based on location (the Sorrentine Peninsula) as we are keen walkers and the Couples concept as we like peace and quiet. Shortly afterwards the glowing reviews started to pour in. We were a little bemused that whilst the vast majority of the reports described the hotel using glowing superlatives every now and again a really critical review would appear. I know you can’t please all the people all of the time but having just returned from a superb two week stay I really feel that whilst all the positive comments are true the more negative remarks are either trivial or untrue. I can only assume that some folks are now going with totally unrealistic expectations. It is great but at the end of the day it is 4 star/ 4T hotel and people need to remember that they are not paying 5 star A La Carte prices.
Some of the few really negative reviews were a source of amusement to guests last week (many of whom follow Tripadvisor). The ghost not seen by most of us as we had availed ourselves too freely of the all inclusive caused particular merriment . A couple of reviews by “non drinkers” who felt that drinks were watered down were also hotly disputed as we availed ourselves of Malibu, Jim Bean, Gordons (and many other branded drinks listed elsewhere on this topic) all poured straight from the bottle. Fresh orange juice was provided every morning for breakfast and immediately replenished and whilst the coffee wasn’t great this really is not untypical of hotels across much of Europe. The rooms all have kettles or expresso machines so if this is important to you take your own! Some of the criticism we found was really quite mean. The restaurant staff work tirelessly to create a really nice ambiance for dinner particularly on theme nights when the tables are decorated beautifully and they must have been dismayed to have the experience described as canteen like and akin to school dinners. One particularly unkind review refers to Clementine the events coordinator as lazy. Slightly shy and not your typical “in your face” rep she nevertheless works tirelessly to organise 4 theme evenings per fortnight, daily well being sessions (yoga and pilates), games tournaments for those who want to join in, wine and cheese tasting, pasta making, the chance to make your own cocktails, themed walks, Italian lessons – and those are just the ones I remember seeing in the programme. The criticism was made in the first weeks of her employment here and could have really badly knocked her confidence. I know she and the other staff read the reviews!
On the subject of the staff across the board they really are the jewel in the Nastro Azzurro’s crown and I would give them 7 stars if I could for their friendliness, hard work and attention to detail. Alessandro the Thomson rep is absolutely brilliant. A native Italian he has the ability to laugh and joke and make fun of himself in a English. As a teacher of modern foreign languages for many years I really cannot begin to say what an incredibly difficult skill this is.
The local area is extremely interesting and there are many excursions to choose from. We did two excellent walks from the hotel itself and another one using the open top hop on hop off bus. At 12 euros for a ninety minute ride all round the peninsular with commentary in English this is a real bargain. Arguments rage over whether it better to do the Thomson trips or “your own thing”. Certainly the latter is cheaper but you do risk missing some of the less well known attractions and the guides really are very good indeed. Whilst not cheap the trip to Capri was one of the best excursions we have ever undertaken. We deliberately chose not to do some of the trips to give ourselves an excuse to come back in a couple of years. Mind you we will have to book early! Most people we spoke to intend to do just the same.
