I stayed at the Nikos 2 self-catering apartments in Kardamena, Kos for 2 weeks at the end of August (into September) with my sister and two friends.
The apartments are just outside the centre of Kardamena. It takes around 15 minutes to walk to the main streets where the bars and restaurants are located. It is approximately a 20 minute walk to the main beach. Although we did find a smaller, quieter beach which was only a 5-10 minute walk away. The apartments are located on a main road which has no sidewalk and is badly lit. We found it a bit dodgy walking back after dark.
The rooms at the Nikos 2 are very basic and quite small. In each room there were twin beds, a small dressing table, a wardrobe, and a sink/fridge/hob jammed in the corner. The bathroom is also very small - ie. you soak the entire place when you have a shower. The rooms do benefit from an ample sized balcony which has a table and two chairs. There were two locking doors leading from the room to the balcony which was good.
There is a safety deposit box available in the room which cost 15 Euros for 2 weeks. Some rooms have air conditioning available to them, but i believe this cost 80 Euros for 2 weeks. Air conditioning was not an option in our rooms so we had to pay a further 15 Euros for a fan for 2 weeks.
For the most part the rooms were kept very clean. However, there appears to be only one maid who doesn't work Sundays. She was very pleasant but a bit daft. Our towels were changed no more than twice and our sheets were only changed once in 2 weeks which we found a bit disgusting. Also, for the duration of our stay we were not once provided with any loo roll, nor even a bar of soap by the sink.
The pool area, on the other hand, was lovely- it is very clean, the pool is a good size and there were always plenty of sun loungers. The pool bar has a variety of food and drink available which is reasonably good and reasonably priced.
I think I should mention that on returning to our rooms at approximately 1:30am one night, we opened the doors to one of our ground floor apartments to let some air in, only to find a strange man peering back at us. Considering we are four 20 year old girls who had specifically asked to be put on the first floor, we were pretty upset and freaked out! We threatened the weirdo with a hairdryer and he appeared to amble off into the bushes. The following morning, we told George (the owner) of our experience. He was seemingly unconcerned and said it was probably just a gypsy trying to steal our passports or a pervert looking for naked woman. His flippant tone and choice words made me laugh but certainly did not put my mind at ease.
Another thing worth mentioning is that the check out was at 12 noon on Thursday 11th September. Considering our flight was a 5.40am on Friday 12th September, we thought this was pretty outrageous. We had to pay another 25 Euros to keep one of the rooms until 8pm - but we still had nearly 7 hours (with nowhere to go) before our transfer arrived. I suspect that Thomas Cook were more to blame for this. However, it was still ridiculous and added to our distaste for George who seemed to be trying to scrounge money out of us at every opportunity.
All things considered we had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. I wouldn't go back to the Nikos 2, but it wasn't a bad place to stay.
