My husband, myself and our 12 year old son stayed for two weeks here during the school Easter holidays. We were in the minority of Brits staying at the hotel, which consisted mainly of Americans and Canadians. When we arrived at reception we were immediately given a room upgrade to a golf course and partial ocean view room on the fifth floor, west side, as a result of my husband registering with the Hilton Honors club a few weeks prior. My husband and son were elated, being big golfing fans and intending to play a few games during our holiday.
The room was good, very clean and stunning views (highly recommend this side of the hotel). We asked for more coat hangers and these were bought up immediately. I must say that whatever else we asked for during our stay the staff were fantastic and always obliged.
Following our long flight we retired to bed early and went down to breakfast at 7am. I had read the previous reviews about the sunbeds being taken with towels at 6am and thought they were so over exaggerating. When we arrived at the pool and saw that nearly all the beds were taken I could not believe it! I always thought that the Germans held the world record for sunbed snatching but the Americans can far beat that! Don't get me wrong, I love the yanks but come on guys.....! I am ashamed to have to admit this but I thought,"if you can't beat them join them". I am an early riser so I subsequently joined the 6am club. There really should be a policy banning bed reservations before a certain time .I would also like to add that smoking should be confined to allocated areas as the sunbeds were so close to each other. We also struggled to get tubes for the lazy river and the slides but, fortunately, the second week resolved everything because most of the Americans children returned to school so there were always plenty of beds and tubes. What a relief!
Anyway, us Brits don't like to complain so here are all the good points about the Hilton.
We never felt obliged or under pressure to tip , as this is not a common British tradition, but we did tip those that deserved it especially the waiting staff who were friendly, courteous and enjoyed a bit of banter (Derek the Man United fan). We had taken Jamaican Dollars but American Dollars were the norm.
We enjoyed and participated in so many activites- kayaking, catamaran, table tennis, beach volleyball, aquarobics. I play tennis so my son and I went to a half hour introduction session and met a family from New York ( Hi Bert) We joined up for a few games during the next week. My husband and son played golf on the White Witch and Cinammon Hill Golf Course ( sadly I was left on my own so sought solace with Bob Marley which I will explain about later). They tell me that both courses were very challenging ( lost count of balls lost) but both were excellent with stunning views.
Cocktails- Bob Marley and Dirty Banana for adults, Shirley Temple and Ziggy Marley for children.
Restaurants- All served good food but Luna and Three Palms menus never changed apart from the dish of the day. Would recommend the Prosciutto parcels, Tomato, garlic and chilli pizza, Lime chicken and Lasagne (not altogether of course but you could try it!). The breakfast omelettes and the evening stir fry in Fresh are a must.
Evening entertainment was mostly exceptional especially the traditional Caribbean night (steelband, limbo dancing, fire-eating). It was definitely not Butlins (Brits will know what I mean).
Older kids entertainment- My son usually sticks to us like glue but (thanks to the staff and the friendly Yanks) he joined in with the table tennis competition (and winning) , volleyball and he loved the Teenzone where we all played on the Wii and Playstation. We also went to the Cricket Club and played Pool although we were usually the only ones in there.
Excursions -We only felt the need to go on one excursion as there was so much to do on the resort and plus they were soooo expensive. We chose to do the half day to Dunns River Falls. It absolutely threw it down with rain on the day. All I can say is that Health and Safety Regulations do not apply in Jamaica. We clung to each other for dear life going up the falls, witnessing numerous minor injuries and a huge man being carried down the boulders by the raging torrent. I have never been so wet and scared in my life but you know what....we really enjoyed it!
All in all we had the most fantastic holiday but would only recommend this place for families with children.
Join Hilton Honors as we were upgraded on arrival to a west side room with golf and partial ocean vi...
