We booked the Sunrise Beach 10 weeks ahead for a special wedding anniversary, paid extra for a sea view room and emailed them 2 days before arrival to ask for an especially nice room. Got a reply saying they would 'do their utmost'.
What we actually got on arrival was a worried look as we tried to check in and we were asked to take a seat. What followed was almost unreal - the hotel was fully booked and a number of guests would be accomodated in the newly opened Sunrise Pearl next door. Despite attempts to negotiate it was clear there was no alternative option. There were several other couples in the same position so it was clear that this was no accident. It seemed we were going to be used as guinea pigs to try out the Sunrise Pearl as the rooms in the new hotel were complete but other facilities were only being completed during our stay.
I'll review my experience at the Pearl separately. We had to walk backwards and forwards to Sunrise Beach for breakfast and evening meals, as well as for sunbeds and swimming. A farce really until after 4 days we were effectively non-residents and left to take our own sunbeds at the Pearl amongst the builders.
I'm giving 1 star as the meals were good, the gardens for the sunbeds were nice, the pools were pretty good and the little touches like the frozen towels handed out to cool you down mid afternoon were appreciated. The 2 guys in the snack shack were also great and we came back a few times for the excellent value toasted sandwiches.
Not a clue what the bedrooms are like, someone else was enjoying the room we booked :-( Evening entertainment was really poor for a hotel of this standard, notably worse than a cheaper hotel we stayed in at Paphos last year.
The resort itself is a mix of a fabulous gently shelving beach, crystal clear sea, excellent seafront boardwalk that goes for miles and guaranteed sunshine. Plus Pizza Hut, McDonalds and other bars who seem to need to offer all day english breakfasts and ever competitive beer prices to get punters in, with tradtional cypriot names like 'Cheers', Flintstones, Fools and Horses and so on.
Yes we got some compensation at the end but only after we finally found our rep on day 5 of a 7 day break.
If you've booked this hotel, don't be wholly surprised on arrival if you are placed elsewhere.
