Traveler’s Checks: Most people make a stop at their local bank to obtain traveler’s checks before they leave on an Italian vacation. This is a smart idea, but some of the stores in Italy will not take traveler’s checks unless they are in Euro (the official currency used in Italy ), and most prefer that the traveler’s checks to be in small denominations.
ATMs: There are many places to use Automated Teller Machines all over Italy . They work the same way as ATMs in America , so there is no need to worry that cash will not be available to travelers when it's needed. If there is any doubt, banks can be contacted prior to the trip to ensure that the machines in Italy are compatible. The money that comes out of an ATM machine in Italy is in Euros.
Tipping: Most people in Italy who receive a service from either a restaurant, bar, hotel, etc… leave a tip which ranges from about fifteen to eighteen percent. Sometimes a bill will include this amount, so be aware… and check the itemized statement prior to paying. Sometimes, if the information is in Italian, English speakers are not aware and consequently leave an additional tip.
