The six rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo are part of the largest Bulgarian rock monastery St. Archangel Michael located in the canyon of r. Rusenski Lom, 22 km southwest of Rousse. It is founded in the beginning of 13th century and was supported by the tsars and patriarchs during the next two hundred years. During the Ottoman ruling the cloister gradually declined and was abandoned. The outstanding and amazingly well preserved murals depict  scenes from the Passion week, portraits of tsars and saints. The churches are on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Currently one of the churches is opened for tourist visits.
