Back in the 16th century La Famulenta was a monastery of Jesuit monks. Agriculture was their main activity and their produce fed the surrounding localities of Moncalvo, Grana, Casorzo and Grazzano Badoglio. These villages sit on the rolling hills that are called the Monferrato in Piedmont. In June 2014 the Monferrato has been appointed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our apartment overlooks the vineyards of Fulvio and Dario Natta who make the local Barbera and other delicacies. Surrounded by the vineyards lie the hazelnut shrubs that produce the famous Piedmontese hazelnuts of the variety 'Tonda Gentile' for the unique Giandujotti.

Very well appointed appartment in a quiet rural location
This appartment is smart and very well appointed and is in a larger building with several appartments (20+) - only few of which were occupied when we visited (mid July) so a lot of the time we had the very nice pool all to ourselves.
The building is at the end of a rural road on a hilltop location, with views both east south and west. Just down from the property are hazelnut trees - we were told the nuts travel a little south to go into Nutella! The town of Moncalvo is an easy drive away (less than 10 minutes) and is actually the smallest city of Italy. It has a very pleasant town square and a great range of local shops. For gelato, look no further than Fred's (except on Wednesdays when they are shut - but there is always Roma a bit further along).
A number of other towns and also Torino are easy to reach by car.
The owner made us very welcome and we are happy to recommend this place.

Unique
We stayed here for a long weekend over the summer and it was truly special. The Italian countryside unaffected by mass tourism. The property is truly unique and wonderfully restored and the owners very welcoming. The lovely local village also has the best cappuccino and very authentic.

Rural retreat
We stayed here with our two young children. Great apartment la famulenta 17 which had two lovely bedrooms with great views. The apartment is well equipped and provides a touch of luxury. Swimming pool is an easy walk from the apartment and offers stunning views of the local area. Only issue was the opening times of restaurants in the evening, a tad too late for our young family although we made it out a few times. Local town is quant with a few bars and eateries.
Apartments is a good base for exploring the local area. It is a fair walk into town so car essential really.
