Excellent service. Flight out of Chengdu was delayed. We were in danger of missing our connecting flight from Guangzhou to NZ. When we let staff at CHengdu airport and on the aircraft know they arranged for transit staff to meet us as be came off the plane at Guangzhou. They then quickly took us via a back route and VIP shuttle bus to immigration to ensure we made our connecting flight. Couldn't have been happier with the service.

Possibly the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. I had 2 small lithium batteries confiscated from my checked bag which I'd forgotten were there. The department that confiscated these left a form in my bag with contact details in order to get the batteries posted. 2 phone numbers, 2 wechat numbers and an email address. No answer from any numbers apart from 1, and the lady who answered said it's the wrong number. No response from email, so impossible to contact. After 7 days the items are "disposed of". I contacted the normal customer service number, one agent said they couldn't help, blaming me for leaving the batteries in there and then hanging up. The next agent was more helpful, but ultimately also couldn't provide a way to contact the baggage inspection department. I feel like I've been robbed.

Due to a combination of setting off late and then airport staff at Guang Zhou seeming to be oblivious to the fact that we flew in, we came within seconds of meeting our 2 hour flight transfer window. Once at Guang Zhou, we were being taken through about 7 rounds of unnecessary security involving overly touchy pat-downs whilst staff were screaming 'hurry up' and 'miss flight' as if it was our fault that we couldn't somehow both be going though security and sprinting to the plane simultaneously. We managed to make the flight by running though the airport, but once on, there wasn't as much a cup of water as an acknowledgement for the olympic effort of what we just endured. The rest of the flight was thoroughly average, with minimal leg room and pretty poor food. Finally, the cherry on the cake was that despite Guang Zhou feeling like a military boot camp, they didn't bother putting our bags on the flight, and so we arrived tired, irritated and bagless. Would give zero stars if I could, get another airline or take an extra day of annual leave to avoid this flight.

I was so incredibly anxious about flying as I had read all the previous reviews. I flew from London Heathrow to Guangzhou, then Gunagzhou to Sydney - the flight went about the same as the previous long hauls to Australia I’ve taken. There was one delay of about 3 hours when we got to Guangzhou, but this wasn’t anything to do with China Southern as there were 117 flights delayed at Baiyun Airport. But all 4 of the flights - inbound and outbound - were absolutely fine - this could’ve been due to the fact that we were flying to and from very large international airports, and that our flights in London and Sydney were scheduled at the very end of the day (9/10pm) The food was fine, they give you snacks if you ask - but you will probably get tired of the same meals especially if you are flying 2 long hauls like us. The staff were very polite and helpful - one lady saw our empty water bottles and offered to fill them. All of them also spoke English and were delighted when we answered back to them in (very bad mind you) Chinese. The lavatories were kept clean and so was the rest of the plane. Good movie selections on the inflight entertainment system - they provide headphones if you don’t have. The legroom isn’t all that bad in Economy - when the person in front reclines then you sort of have to as well. The actual airport is fine to navigate, I’m not really sure what other reviewers meant saying it was hard but we had no issues at all because there are English words on most of the signs. I’ll definitely book with CSA when I go back to Australia. If you’re an overthinker like me, it’s important to remember how many flights leave every day, and how many people are on that flight + left a lower review.
