- I3569OVmichaeld0 contributionsSammy & P.J . Best tour guides !The best part of this activity was our guide SAMMY ! Sammy was the best, he was so awesome that the 40min bus ride was more fun than the actual activity, he was explaining about dominican culture and how things work here, it was so informative and he is so fun and knowledgeable ! He really made our day, he even made our kid laugh, i would strongly advise you to request him for your trip it is worth it ! Sammycarwash53@gmail.com ! Hit him up for homemade recipes and remedies from local culture he does send you all this for free because he is a genuine nice guy! Have a good trip you guys. The monkeys were adorable and my 4 years old had the time of his life ! The buggeys were so-so there isnt that much driving mabey you drive for actually 25min after all the safety meetings and stops along the way but our buggy guide P.B was super entertaining and fun to work with !Written January 3, 2025

- dhavlin0 contributionsBuses, boats and horsesOverall, I enjoyed the tour. The bus ride is a bit long, about 2 hours one way. Our tour guide, Nacho, was great. He tried to entertain us the whole way. Our driver, Daniel, was really good. Very careful and friendly. You do get to see the country during the ride. You next stop for a quick snack, ham & cheese sandwich. Following the snack, you board a catamaran for a quick ride to the Samana. Our catamaran staff was great. Very courteous and friendly. You then take a 30 minute ride to the horses. It was fun riding the horses but it was very chaotic getting on the horses. There are not enough guides so you may go without on the short ride. The horses are very well trained to the path. Once you get to the falls, which are beautiful, there are good photo ops. You then take a horse ride back. The only bad part was the aggressive way the guides demand tips. Was somewhat uncomfortable. You then get an authentic Dominican meal. Then back to the bus, catamaran to a small island where you get a pina colada in a pineapple. You get to spend about an hour at the beach which has small shops surrounding it. After the hour you take your final bus ride home. It is a very long day. The day we went it rained so it dampened our experience. Take money to tip everyone along the way. My husband and I enjoyed it but my young adult kids only enjoyed the horse ride.Written December 26, 2024
- 989radhab0 contributionsAmazing ExperienceStaff was very organized and professional, they are well trained. I did my first Zipline adventure, was very nervous but after doing one line I have been very comfortable. Breathtaking views and perfect weather. They promptly picked us at the hotel and dropped. - barbarajB2210UU0 contributionsMonkeys/Zips!Monkeyland and Ziplining was a great dual adventure. I’m so glad we did it. Communication was on point. We got our pick up time and location right after booking. That was very nice, no waiting and worrying about coordinating. First part of the trip we went on the ziplining portion. You get to the meeting location, strapped into harnesses and briefed on the how to’s and you’re off! It all happened so quickly that you almost forget how scared you were. lol. 12 lines total. All fast all high. Some breathtakingly so!!! All guides are helpful and encouraging. Then we got to stand around and wait. That’s the one part I didn’t much enjoy. Lots of standing around waiting not being sure if you were still with the right group. After waiting, we ate lunch ( hot dog, fruit, soda) and got some history of the country followed by an “opportunity” to purchase things, of course. Then we moved on to Monkeyland. The monkeys are adorable. Be aware, they will climb and jump all over you. If you’re skittish about this, think twice. Because they really do launch themselves at you. They’re in your hair, on your shoulders, arms, everywhere. It’s really fun. All in all, this excursion was great, although a bit tedious with the waiting. Still nothing but 5 stars!Written December 11, 2024

While we did have a good time and having the monkeys jump all over you was the highlight, it wasn't exactly what we were expecting.
Pick up from our resort was on time at 8 am and our tour guide Sexi Papi was fun and we got to see a little bit of the country outside of the resort.
Upon arriving, you and other large groups are taken to a seated theater area where they will go over the rules with you. They are very specific in telling you to watch your step and not to touch the monkeys or to be afraid when they jump on you. Sergio and Philipe who worked there were knowledgeable and answered our questions. You are then taken to an enclosed area where all the monkeys are kept. While they do have 6 acres (if I remember correctly) to roam around, they are still in captivity. The monkeys are also not native to the Dominican as they were brought from Costa Rica and Guyana, You are then lined up with a large group of people, told to put your hands out and get ready for the guide to come give you a bowl of food. All the monkeys start swarming around at this stage and one of the guides will take pictures for you but you are also given the chance to take plenty of your own pictures. You are given the opportunity to purchase the pictures at the end for a cost of $10 usd per picture.
After the monkeys, you are then guided to an area where they show you how to make coconut oil, coco butter and chocolate. After this, you then go into another seated area where they will give you a sample of hot chocolate, coffee and mamajuana and you have the opportunity to buy some. Could have done without the additional part of the tour but it was quick and we were back at the resort by 12:30 pm.

If you are reading reviews because you are considering this excursion, book it!! It was a lot of fun! I kinda thought I would walk into an area and feed a few monkeys and they would politely take the fruit from my hand and we would pose for a picture or two. Wrong! We were lead into a large enclosed area where 24 rambunctious spider monkeys leaped across our heads like we were toys on a playground! We were given dishes of food and whoever had the food, had 24 monkeys going bananas on their laps, shoulders, arms and heads! It was wild kingdom! At first it was a bit intimidating because I didn’t know exactly what I had signed up for. After the initial shock of being manhandled by these tiny little creatures, it turned out to be really fun! The monkeys were not aggressive at all and you could tell they are very used to humans. Several monkeys had babies attached to them! They were adorable. We were able to take more than enough pictures with them. The monkeys really like cell phones. They swarm to them and look into them, which provides for really cute selfies. They allow you to take your own photos and they also take professional photos of you that you can purchase in the gift shop for $10 each. My daughters are 14 and 9 and they said it was the highlight of their whole trip.
The tour through town in the safari vehicle was fun too. We felt very safe and were able to get a look at life in the Dominican. And, our driver looked just like Morgan Freeman!! I would say the entire trip took about 4 hours.
Definitely do this excursion!!

Melvin was a SENSATIONAL tour guide and Nathaniel a great driver! We were the first to be picked up for the tour and they were actually early which was great. Melvin was full of fantastic information and commentary on our way to Monkeyland - we love the information he gave us about the Dominican Republic and the area we were in. He was easy going and very helpful.
We first went to the coconut house and saw a Dominican house. There was an adorable little puppy and a few cats who all enjoyed the attention we were all giving them. Kevin was giving the tour/information for the coffee/coconut/cocoa plantation - he had a lot of information to share and made the two are really fun. We got to try a little bit of coffee and cocoa which was great. At the end of the tour we tried coffee, hot chocolate and Mama Juana and you can purchase some from the plantation if you want.
Monkeyland was pretty fun. You did have to rent a locker at $10US and you got $5US back when you returned the lock. We needed to wear masks when we saw the monkeys and we disinfected our shoes before going in. The monkeys were just running around doing their thing and would just jump on you and run past you anytime they felt like it. They took us down the ramp to the first level and had everyone line up against the fence and put some food in your palm so they could get pictures with you and the monkeys. One of them peed on my brother, which we were told made him lucky. After that they took us down further the ramp to the bottom area to put food and bowls in your hands for the monkeys again. I'm assuming you could purchase their pictures but we didn't as there was plenty of time to take your own pictures.

You will be picked up early in morning, we got picked up at 7:50 for your 9:30 tour, you will stop and pick up other people from different hotels. Then we did a coffee and chocolate tour, there is not fruits and no guided tour of mountain. After they advertise the products and you wait for everyone to buy their products. Then you are taken to a room where instructions are given followed by gated area to see the monkeys.
The monkeys are the highlight of this trip because they jump on you from everywhere. Our guide inside was very very rude and at one point he was screaming at us because we had our phones out to take pictures of my parents while he was taking the picture with the professional camera. He wanted us to put our phones away at this point and just stand in line. Just so they can use their camera and charge you later.
I was very disappointed because everything is super rushed in this part of the tour and after they will barley give you any fruit to do your own pictures.
The lady that was passing out the fruit will purposely stand in front of the person and by the time she is done giving out the fruit the monkeys ate the fruit and are gone, and you cannot take any pictures. He will charge you $40 for downloadable pictures after, which is way too much.

You’ll be picked up in a nice air conditioned bus and spend only 40 minutes inside of it picking up other people from they’re hotels. Then the bus pulls over on the side of the road and makes you get out and into a bus with no seatbelt or windows and doors you will need to grab the seat in front of you for support the ride is an hour and a half my wrists were killing me and it was so hot, periodically throughout the ride you will smell cow feces. You can only spend 30 minutes with the monkeys, face masks on at all times even in your photos, no petting them no water or bags allowed inside. They force you to stand in a group so they can make they monkeys go to you and take the good photos for you and you’ll need to pay for them afterwards. So basically you and your group will need to stand together so no one else can take that really good photo. The coconut house is a half hour walk with about 50 steep stairs to climb and not worth it. Remember that nice air conditioned bus? They won’t let you get on it you’ll need to take the bus with no windows, doors or support the entire ride back and everyone needs to be dropped off. The entire excursion was unsafe, caused me severe pain, most hours are spent picking people up and dropping them off. They said food is included it is not so you will go 6-7 hours without eating and you can’t get food anywhere. When I asked to get back in the green bus they got very nasty with me I said that’s the bus that picked us up I want to go on that one and they just kept being nasty. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

This trip out started off well, with the bus already being ready to pick us up before the pick up time. What I would suggest is to make sure you are there early to make sure you receive an actual seat and not a pop up seat found in the aisle.
Once we drive for around 45 minutes we picked up the tour guide. The tour guide is the reason why the trip only received 3 starts. After bellowing an introduction and making noises rather aggressively at babies faces. He proceeded to give a 10 minute speech on how we all should tip him and the driver as they need money to build a house. This made all of the guest feel rather uncomfortable due to the forceful nature of his speech.
We were then surprised by an addition to our trip by going to a cocoa and coffee plantation next door to the monkeys. During this aspect we discovered our tour guide wasn’t sharing the right information so another tour guide took over whilst our tour guide went and helped himself to the alcohol. This aspect although a little boring for the kids, was in aspect interesting for adults!
The best part of the trip and the aspect I would recommend are the monkey. You are given a very informative speech on how to act when with the monkeys. You are also given the option to either put your bag in a shared box or pay 5$ for a private locker. During the time with monkey you are allowed to take your one photos however the guides also take many professional photos of you and give you opportunity to buy single photos or all digitally for $40.
The trip finished for us with a lunch at Maria’s cafe. This could be found within someone’s house and they serve you food and drinks. During this point our guide started to help himself to the rum…
The activities in the trip and those who work within the monkey land, were extremely good and I would highly recommend. However our tour guide let down to the experience!

This was an excellent trip!!! Our guide Amando, driver Halbany where an absolute delight!!!
Firstly we came abroad a very distinctive adventure truck, open top, buckle up as ride can be very bumpy and windy.
Next stop was the plantation of coca and coffee, this was an excellent educational opportunity to see and taste how the Dominicans produce these modern day commodities. It was a really insightful experience and humbling to see the hard work that goes into the produce. Amando was very knowledgeable and able to delight his presentation in a very engaging manner.
We purchased coca, coco butter, cinnamon and sugar, coconut oil all organic and tasted great.
Other products available include mama junana and vanilla. Thankfully they accept all credit and debits cards and range from $5-20.
Next stop was the beautiful cute mokeys, great trip for brave children and adults. They take very high precautions on sanitisation and wear masks to prevent infection. They monkeys are very intelligent and interactive jumping on heads, shoulders, phones whilst eating from bowls of food provided. All your belonging are stored away in lockers whilst you visit the monkey- there are photographers on hand to capture the moments.
Beautiful views from the money sanctuary and images are available to purchase at €40.
Overall great trip, paid approximately £56 GBP.
Amando was a fantastic guide and really made the trip that extra bit special. Thank you Adventure Runners for a great trip, and the highlight of our stay here in Dominican Republic.

We thoroughly enjoyed our plantation tour through the scenic local mountain roads on the east coast of DR. We had a very informative tour guide Edy Diaz who knew all aspects of the region and made our tour fun. Our driver Hubany Dominguez ensured a safe, comfortable and timely trip to all stops, he even stopped at places to great pics. We strongly recommend this tour for those who wish to see and experience local culture and life in the DR.

I bought the “no transportation” option of the Monkeyland ticket via Runners Adventures website for me and my husband, as we have a car and drove to the place ourselves. The program on the website promised visit to the garden, interaction with squirrels, cocoa and coffee plantation visit, typical house visit. The ticket suggested to be at the place at 10:15. Nowhere on the ticket or website there was information that arriving at 10:15 means seeing only the monkeys for 30 minutes in a crowd of 20 people and none of the other promised things, although the website suggested the tour is going to take 5 hours. Visiting the monkeys did not include any informative storytelling about the species. They give the visitors a plate, put fruits and sunflower seeds into them and the monkeys jump around from one person to the other to get the treats. The monkeys are very cute, though. After the visit to the monkeys finished to our questions about the plantations and local house the guides said that that part of the tour had already taken place and we should have been there at 9. Nowhere on the website or ticket there was such information. We insisted to be shown what is promised by the program. We were suggested to join another group and taken to the place they briefly show how cocoa and coffee is processed. However no plantation or local’s house. To our inquiries we were told this is all there is. Overall it was a disappointing experience and not worth the price we paid $70+taxes per person.

We went for this trip hoping to entertain our children, since we were on many tours oriented more for adults and history.
If you hope to interact with monkeys, it’s wrong, it is more like a photo session with small group of monkeys, who will come to you for a few seconds and run away, and if you are lucky you will take a picture.
The only good photo you can have, when monkey trainers tell everyone to hide their phones and cameras. They will give a few snacks, they will take 3-5 photos and go with food to next couple/family, and all the monkeys run away.
We did not receive the expected experience, also paid for photos, since it was not easy to catch a picture with monkeys by ourselves. Obviously, monkeys are sweet creatures and it is nice to spend time with them, but the problem is that you don’t get to interact with them as you expect.
Also, it took us approx. 4 hours of overall driving, because we were the first hotel, so we had to pick everyone on our way, and then we were last while going back.
From the brighter side, the coffee (cocoa) house was nice, but needs improving. It would be better if you had more time to taste each drink, but it feels rushed. The experience felt better only thanks to the really nice guides in the coffee house and in the bus. It was interesting to see the process of making cocoa/coffee.

Has anyone been from Hyatt Zilara? Wondering how long the actual ride is to the destination.

Not sure, we were at Dreams Onyx and it was at least a 45 minute drive. If you're closer to punts Cana I think your drive will be shorter.🤷♀️

Is there anything we can buy to eat at monkey land as the excursion we want to do is an 8 hour day?

They do have a small gift shop with a few snacks. But I'd eat before hand or bring a snack for the ride.
You'll have a blast, we loved every minute!!

How much cash or how much is typically spent in tips, souveneirs, and photos? We are trying to figure out how much we need to have for this excursion. It will be my husband, me, our teenage daughter, and 9-year-old son. Thanks.

You won't need a lot of cash. Things are not terribly expensive and we stayed at an all inclusive but still tipped the equivalent of 10 American dollarsdollars to at each meal.
