We booked Johnston Canyon Icewalk through Banff adventures website during the month of Dec 2022, and I must say this experience was truly amazing. The website allows you to choose your nearby hotel pickup and desired timeslot, The crew operated by Discover Banff Tours sent us a pickup bus at the exact pickup time.
Our guide was Ross, and she was truly professional and had a good knowledge of Geology and Rocks.
She helped us with the equipment and gear required for Icewalks, and explained about the tour on the Go, she even took amazing photos of the scenic locations.
On the way back she greeted us with Hot chocolates and Maple cookies which were Yummy....!!!

This tour is truly recommended and are kids friendly Too!!

Thank you Discover Banff Tours Crew team and Ross for making this trip memorable one!!

Thank you for the kind words! Icewalking is a unique experience and Johnston Canyon has many secrets that only a guide will be able to show you. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and hope to see you on more soon!

I’m kind of a selfie master. My teenage kids were giving me grief and I appreciated how Roz sort of defended me but, also, she graciously offered to take our pictures and those look better than my selfies do. Roz drove the bus like a pro, she gave some great Banff-area history and geologic information, and the hot cocoa and maple cookies were tasty. This was a fun, beautiful hike and Roz brought it alive and represented for our group when things got busy on the bridge. Recommended.

It was a great day for the Johnston Canyon Icewalk - found our tour guide Anik extremely knowledgeable, funny & kind. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip, getting picked up from our hotel, her knowledge of the area, wildlife, getting to know the people in her group! All COVID restrictions were in place therefore the group was small. It was a beautiful day and will definitely recommend this to visiting friends & family ❤️ Forgot to mention the cleats were very secure and worked like a charm - Anik also provided us with hot chocolate (hot cocoa ) and cookies at the top that she carried in her backpack. It was an awesome treat when we reached the upper falls, she also takes great pics making sure she sanitized between each couple!

Hi Elissa, Thank you for joining us on the Johnston Canyon Icewalk with Anick, and for taking the time to share your feedback. She has been with us for many years, and we completely agree that she has an incredible knowledge of the local area. We're glad to hear that you felt comfortable with the COVID-19 protocols as we have been taking these very seriously, and that you enjoyed the hot chocolate and maple cookies while enjoying the stunning views at the Upper Falls. We hope to see you back in Banff sometime soon.

This tour was exceptional! My partner and I did the Johnston Ice-canyon hike to the lower falls in January of 2023. Tim was our guide and picked us up from the ptargiman hotel in downtown Banff. He arrived on time and was incredibly friendly, insightful and proactive about safety.

Once our group had all been picked up, we set off on the Bow Valley Parkway where we had an opportunity to look for wildlife throughout the journey. Meanwhile, Tim provided a great seminar on the history and evolving landscapes surrounding Banff. He was clear about how the mountains had formed, the animals in and around the area, even detailing common, uncommon and rare sightings. Tim also did a great job of explaining his history and para medicine background to give the group a better, more genuine, relation to himself.

Upon arrival, there were first class washrooms and amenities (first class in accordance to national park standards). It was now time to begin the hike. We started by gearing up with ice cleats to prevent slipping on the ice.

It was now time to begin, throughout the first leg of the trip, Tim provided great detail into how ice canyons form, the fossils that can be found and the formation of ice falls.

Once we arrived to the main fall, everyone had a chance to get a photo and immerse themselves in the environment. It was a great chance to appreciate the wonder of the scenery.

On this tour we were treated to a great cup of hot chocolate and some nice maple cookies (I personally dunked the biscuit into the hot choc, which made for a delicious combo). This was a great opportunity to get to know some of the group and share a snack.

After the hike, we went to one last spot which was a 5 minute drive up the road. Tim took us to ‘Castle Mountain’ which had a great view of the north face of the mountain. It was a peaceful spot with flowing water and pebbles nestled in the snow. It made for some spectacular photos.

Lastly, on the way back to our Banff accomodation, Tim provided some great local knowledge on eating and drinking spots and other activities that are synonymous within Banff.

Overall we had a great experience with Tim as our guide and want to thank him for the incredible tour.

I (20 yrs old) did the Ice Walk with my mom (who's 58) and we LOVED it. Such a great hike and so beautiful. Our tour guide was Heidi, she was very very knowledgeable and friendly and made the entire trip very entertaining. She picked us up right from our hotel in Banff, our group was only 10 people, and she dropped us off at the end too. If you go on your own, definitely make the trip to the upper falls, you won't be disappointed! Would highly recommend doing it with a guide though, Heidi had all kinds of info about the history of the canyon, the people who have lived there, and she pointed out a lot of stuff you would totally miss if you went alone, like fossils in the Rock walls, all the different types of vegetation and animals, and so much more. A ton of fun! Heidi if you're reading this you rock (no pun intended)

The Johnston canyon is truly spectacular, and has to be seen to be believed. Our guide didn’t add much to the experience, strangely spending 5 minutes talking about the washrooms, taking blurry photos and making up fake stories about the canyon’s history as a joke. The path is well marked, not slippery at all (cleats not necessary), and easy to navigate. If I went back to the canyon, I would be happy to explore it myself without paying for a guide!

Hi Tristan, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback from your Johnson Canyon Icewalk with Raven, and we're sorry to hear that you didn't see value in the tour. You're completely correct that anyone can explore places in Banff National Park such as Johnston Canyon on their own, and we aim to provide value through the guiding experience. We've shared your feedback with our guide, so that she can learn from your feedback and improve. We're pleased to see that you enjoyed your Discover Banff & Its Wildlife Tour with Gina, and we hope to see you back again in the future.

What a difference with a guide!! From the point of pick-up at the hotel the experience was friendly and informative. I have done the Johnston Canyon in the summer on my own but experiencing this in the winter with gorgeous scenery, and a guide who shared stories about the park, the history, conservation efforts and the wildlife habitat was so wonderful! They even provide the ice cleats so one less thing to manage. The hot chocolate and cookies at the Upper Falls was a nice touch :) I would highly recommend this tour.

Such a great trip. I was travelling on my own and there were eight adults in total. Our guide Annie(sorry wrong spelling!) was great. She was really pleasant, funny, and so knowledgeable about the national park. I would recommend this trip to anybody who is staying in and around Banff in the winter. It is truly spectacular. Can’t fault Discover Banff Tours at all; everything from pick up to drop off was fantastic and good value for money. Thank you

The Johnston canyon ice walk was fantastic. It was the highlight of our 5 week winter holiday through Canada. We did do this walk after a heavy fall of snow which added to the spectacular scenery. Our guide Jeff did an excellent job, he was skilled at driving in the heavy snow, gave us great information along the walk and set a nice steady pace. The ice crampons provided were great as they stopped you from slipping. Every part of the walk was beautiful, the iced over river, the snow laden trees the lower falls , the cave and the upper falls frozen into huge icicles were amazing.

The tour was fantastic from the moment Jeff picked us up right at our hotel until he dropped us off again. He was attentive to the group members and knowledgeable about the history and geology of the area. I would highly recommend this trip. Booking online was simple and the company is very good at communicating and answering questions beforehand.
