The stand out lifted Summer ride in the Rockies
Sunshine Meadows would be the least publicised of the 4 chairlifts or gondolas in this area, but wow, what an absolute gem. It’s about half an hour out of town, and starts with a gondola ride, then change to a chairlift, then a short walk to a viewing platform that brings you to just about the most beautiful spot in the Rockies. From there you can walk a short distance into the wildflower meadows and back, or continue on to the longer 2 hour circuit down to the lower lakes, and then back around to the gondola (no need to walk back up the steep slope to the chairlift). And the lack of publicity means no crowds. We couldn’t believe how few people knew about this place. There was heaps of free parking, no queue for the gondola or the chairlift, or the cafes at the base station or chairlift station. And if, as we did, you extend the walk beyond the first platform, you will rarely encounter another person. Instead you get waterfalls, running streams, lakes, stunning views and wildflower meadows. As the little boy next to us said when he reached the lookout “mum, I can’t believe it’s real”. Neither could we. Weather plays a big part here so, choose a sunny day, but if you can only do one gondola or chairlift, ditch the rest and journey out to Sunshine Meadows.

    Nothing short of epic
I had always neglected Sunshine Meadows on my way across the Rockies for many years until last summer - don’t make the same mistake. Sunshine Meadows is an absolutely stunning place. The views are amazing and so are the hikes. I think you could spend days hiking the area but if you’re coming a for a day, you’ll find plenty of suitable places to visit. Be sure to bring enough water and snacks because there is no store once you leave the upper station of the gondola and it can get very hot up there. Truly an amazing place, definitely recommend.

    disappointment
Paid for the gondola and the ski lift but the ski lift was not open when we got there. At least none of the ski lifts were operating. Overpriced for just a gondola right. Not much up there to do. Not crowded because people know this is a disapointnent!

Beautiful wildflower hike and delicious burger lunch at Trapper's
Our family of 4 (2 sons in their 20's) hiked this trail. The gondola ride up was peaceful and scenic, and we had the gondola to ourselves as well. From there, we took the Standish chair lift to the top. After some photos at the top, we hiked the trail around all 3 lakes and enjoyed the beautiful wildflowers along the way. Rather than hiking back up to the top to ride the chairlift back down, we simply hiked down to the top of the gondola ride. This allows you to hike slightly downhill rather than uphill, and is an easy hike. Before taking the gondola back down, we had a burger at Trapper's, which was delicious. Highly recommend this hike and meal afterwards.

Wowser of a day hike in flower-covered alpine meadowns
Very worth while day trip to see the vistas and hike around the lakes. Moderate exercise requires some exertion but beautiful views and not full of people due to the distance you are away from the beaten tourist path. Bring your lunch and lots of water to hydrate. There are 2 privies along the lake paths for a private pee break.

    Easy, beautiful hike
Get off the chair lift and enjoy an easy, one-hour (with multiple stops for photo ops) trip through the meadows and back down to the lodge. Gorgeous place, highly recommend.

Fairly challenging hike up through the meadow to get to the lakes. Worth every last bit of it. Wildflowers everywhere and profound and refreshing quite and tranquility.

Beautiful hike when there are no horse flies!
Take the gondola, otherwise the longish hike up is super boring. From the top of the gondola ride, the views along the hike are simply stunning, bring sunglasses for sure. And we hiked in August, the horse flies were just dreadful, they wouldn’t leave us alone. I don’t know when they aren’t so prevalent but before I do the hike again I will definitely find out. Note: we did this hike years ago even though it says 2021, we just couldn’t go back further. Travel date relevant for hotels and restaurants, not so much for hikes. That mountain you can see, it’s probably still going to be there in a decade.

    Watched Grizzly in Grizzly Loop
Hiked up the road from the gondola base (actually from the far end of the parking lot) because the gondola was inexplicably closed due to COVID-19. The walk up the road was pretty easy, and the subsequent hike to Rock Isle Lake and around Grizzly Loop was easy, but spectacular. We walked up to the Standish Lookout and actually watched a large grizzly walk through the Grizzly Loop area.

    Soooo pretty in the summertime
This place lives up to its name... very sunny, gorgeous trails, and perfect for a solo hike. Very cool spot right at the border of BC and Alberta.

I greatly enjoyed sunshine meadows. When I went it was pretty quiet and very relaxing. Just make sure that you are able to do long hikes, but if you can this might be the right one for you.

    snowboarding
I had never been snowboarding before but I decided to try it out for the first time. I took a lesson from Oliver Harper and I am now so much more confident going down the mountain. I was able to go from having no knowledge about snowboarding at all to doing tricks such as 360 degree turns and tail drifts. I highly recommend taking a lesson from Oliver Harper. He also recommended to do a morning lesson rather than an evening lesson so that the snow will be perfect and not packed down as much. You can rent all the equipment that you will need at sunshine and you can take group or private lessons. Also be prepared to fall...a lot, practice makes perfect! Oli will be able to help you to figure out what you do wrong and how to not do that so that you hopefully stay vertical. Good luck out there!!

Just be aware that the leaflets they have out and about in Banff show some beautiful walks but nowhere do they tell you that in order to do those walks you have to pay a ridiculous amount to get to the start of them for a gondola!!! When we complained we got a man called Osmond Chiu who didn't say he was part of the management team until asked directly several times, he then tried to make out that the hotels were at fault as they should make people aware of the cost - we pointed out that we picked their leaflet up in a public area!! No accountability taken for the fact that you are totally mislead. Awful customer service and frankly not worth the 20 minute drive from Banff.

We weren’t sure what to expect from our 2-hour guided hike with Imogen. Let’s just say the information we got would have been captivating even if received inside the interpretive center…but instead we enjoyed hearing all about the history, topography, botany, animals and climate of the area while hiking and seeing vistas and lakes, encircled by majestic peaks. Thank you Sunshine and sunny Imogen!

Great experience! The gondola was really fun and lengthy which we enjoyed, and the chairlift was really fun! We had two friends with us who had never been on ski lifts, and they really enjoyed it! We hiked to the lookout point and then down the hill to the lake, and around back to Sunshine village. It was about a 40 minute hike and not too strenuous at all - we saw a few families doing it! The BEST part was that it was not busy AT ALL. We went on August 6th around 11am with 4 people, and we had pre-purchased day tickets online the night before but didn’t need to - we could have bought tickets right there. We got our tickets printed at the front desk on the 2nd level and got right on the gondola. We didn’t have to wait in any lines, there weren’t any people in the way of our view or pictures, it was the best place we went all week because it wasn’t busy.

We opted for the 2 hour hike with a trail guide…Conny was wonderful. A native of Austria…she knows mountains! The ride up was smooth and the views were spectacular. Wildflowers were at the end of bloom, but still stunning. Many people hiking without guide as the trails were well marked and the terrain moderate. Don’t miss this!!

This was a highlight of our trip. One member of our group is mobility impaired, and Sunshine Village Gondola went out of their way to stop the ride on the chairlift and gondola so that she could could get on and off. She was able to go to the viewing platform, and then relax at the restaurant with a drink while many of us hiked. The trails were covered with flowers and there were spaced out benches to rest and admire the scenery. We loved the hike, and had many paths to choose from.
When we meet up at the restaurant, we shared a giant platter of nachos and cool drinks.
No reservation was needed, and parking was free. Food and sport shop available at the bottom and at top of gondola.

Before we did this hike, I was skeptical about having to pay for the gondola - $65 each is a lot of money for hiking. But it was well worth it. Absolutely beautiful views and diverse landscapes. Well marked trails; we connected several together and walked 7 miles. Although there were other people around, it never felt busy. I'm hesitant to call anything a hidden gem in Banff as the area is generally so busy, but I do think this fits the bill. Just don't tell too many other people, okay?!

The drive itself to the parking lot is beautiful. Lovely quiet tree lined road. We saw a small group of goats right by the parking lot.
The Java Lift Coffee bar had some delicious almond Danish pastry and coffee. Took the Gondola to Sunshine village. The Gondola ride was really long and scenic. It was an overcast day and started raining at the top. We hung out at the Interpretive Centre for a while and lucky for us, the sun came out. However since the chairlift had shut we hiked up to the Rock Isle lake. And then onto the Grizzly and Larynx lakes. The Rock Isle lake is simply beautiful and the alpine flowers all along the way were so lovely. Little streams all àlong. The view at the lookouts was great. The entire environment was magical and like something out of a picture book. We then hiked to the chairlift station at the top -superb views and a lovely long ride down. Highly recommend doing this easy trail. If you take the chairlift, which we could have done if we had waited a short while till it opened again after the rain, the trails are much easier.

If your skiing Sunshine Village Ski Resort make sure to take the free mountain tour. The guides are volunteers and love to show you around the resort. The tours are separated by skiing ability so be sure to be honest and join the group at your skiing ability level. Our guides were tremendous! They took our Black/Blue level group all around the resort. We skied just about off every lift and down through powder, some steeps and nicely groomed trails. Our group had a super time. Our volunteer guides explained how to get around, answered our questions and provided some insight to the resort, along with some nice humorous tales. At the end of our tour we all felt confident that we could navigate around the resort. Great job by the volunteers, it was my third time at Sunshine and the best ever!

On July 15, 2022, on my way from Radium to Banff I called to see if I could get in on the 2 p.m. hike offered by the Interpretive Center. I arrived at the base parking lot and got on the gondola for the ride up to the village. Once at the village I checked in for the hike. I was surprised to hear that I was the only one scheduled for the hike, yet the two guides, Sara and Erin, were still willing to take me. I totally would have understood if they cancelled the hike. What a huge blessing for me. At the village we rode the Standish chairlift up to the top terminal to begin our hike. Both Sara and Erin were awesome. They are so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, as well as wildlife and mountains, and when I was distracted, they were so good at bringing me back around to the interpretive part of the hike. They may not have realized it, but I really did learn so much from them both and have researched things we talked about and have watched out for things that I learned to identify ever since I left. Because it was just the three of us, I felt like I was hiking with friends, and Sara and I especially had several things in common. For this hike to be Erin's first hosted hike there, she did an amazing job. The weather was perfect, and the scenery can't be beat. What I also love about this place is there aren't the hordes of people you encounter on other trails. It is such a peaceful location. I hope that both Sara and Erin will be able to see this review and know how much I appreciate the time they spent with me. I highly recommend the Sunshine Meadows hosted 2 hr hike. Such an awesome experience.

Absolutely wonderful! Gondola ride and ski lift gave great views. The trails at the top were well marked and manageable. Wild flowers were in bloom and having lunch beside the lake was perfect.
