We did the 8:30 AM tour from Granville Island, on one of the custom build catamarans. Paid parking is available right in front, or at the Anderson Street Parking Lot nearby. On the weekend it's free until 11 AM, and only a minimal hourly fare after that.

The tour itself took us 4 hours, and we were lucky to have spotted a Grey whale right close to the UBC campus - about 45 min after we departed. Following that about an hour and a half in, we saw multiple pods of orcas. Lastly we saw some seals, sea lions and bald eagles on a private island. The trip back took us about an hour.

Stephen, Rebecca, Wilma and Sandy were fantastic! They were an all-star crew taking care of our safety, enthusiastically explaining about the wildlife (peppered with stories and anecdotes), manning the drinks station and also photographing! Their energy and attitude made up for the terrible weather (complimentary hot drinks helped too).

The restrooms were clean and well maintained as well

Would certainly recommend Prince of Whales' Whale Watching to anyone that hasn't done it before.

Highly recommend this tour. Leaving from Granville Island is very convenient and it’s a great day out on the water. Even if you don’t see as many whales as you are hoping for, the scenery is worth it. And, if you don’t see any whales at all, you can rebook another trip for free!

The entire team were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Wilma, and the other naturalists were very enthusiastic and engaging. They really made an effort to educate everyone about what we were going to see, and what we were actually witnessing, as well as answering questions. They actually went around the boat, sitting with groups and individuals.

What you should know in advance:
1. The tours are not allowed to approach the whales, and must stay at least 200m away. This means that the whales are really far off in the distance. Phone cameras aren’t really going to give you the best pictures, luckily, Prince of Whales provides you with professional photos of the wildlife spotted on your trip. If you have a camera with a long lens, go for it. Otherwise, just enjoy the experience and don’t worry about taking photos.

2. You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks. Do so. It’s a long trip, and there are bathrooms and tables on board. Granville Island has lots of places to pick up food, if you’ve forgotten. There is coffee, tea and hot chocolate available onboard but the snacks were not available on my trip.

3. It does get cold and very windy if you’re sitting outside. Hold on to your hats! However, the boat comes to a stop, slow cruise once whales are spotted.

4. It takes about an hour and a half before you reach the first whale spotting location. Enjoy the views.

5. They had phone chargers onboard, if needed.

6. Bring and use lots of sunscreen. It’s intense on the water and you can get a really bad sunburn. Take advantage of the covered areas onboard.

Overall, it’s well worthwhile! Have fun!

Amazing trip to see the humpback whales and other marine wildlife. Crew and guides were fantastic and organisation was perfect. Easy to get to the boat on Granville Island for the tour. Naturalist guides were very knowledgeable about the wildlife (Jill gave us some great information). Our official photographer on the boat did a great job and our photo package (included in the price) was with us within an hour of our return, great service. Thanks to the whole crew for a great trip. This activity was ok. We were lucky enough for it to not have rained, but I feel a bit disappointed with what we saw. We drove out for about 2 hours with nothing in site. After “seeing” armless seals, the captain turned around to head in another direction (for another hour) because they heard from another boat that there were whales south of wherever we were. We saw two whales’ dorsal fins and tails and watched them for half an hour, but no water from the blowhole and they didn’t surface. I guess I expected too much out of the tour? I’m just a little shocked that this is one of the most popular tours in Vancouver.
The cruise ship was comfortable and they had an insulated lounge below deck to warm up. They offered complimentary coffee and tea I believe. There were snacks offered for $3 each which goes to a whale foundation.
Overall, I wouldn’t book again or recommend just because I feel like you could spend 5-6 hours doing something better.

t_xiao22, Thank you so much for your review! We apologize for your disappointment in the tour, we unfortunately cannot control whether whales breach or not as they are wild animals. We are glad you enjoyed the ship; we do what we can to make the experience a comfortable one for our guests. Our year-round whale sighting success rate is ~95% (averaged across all of our adventures) with chances being even higher during summer months, so we hope you book with us again and that your next tour can be a 5 star experience!

This trip exceeded expectations. I had family visiting from Florida and Ontario and when they asked about doing this I wasn't sure. Now Very glad we did it! The boat was comfortable with a perfect indoor area with chairs and even some tables for my senior and junior family members. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was one extremely knowledgeable staff member talking about the whales and other wildlife. She seemed to genuinely love sharing the information and was a joy to listen to and ask questions of. My 5 yr old was in awe of her. She was kind enough to make a special trip into the indoor area to share information with my mother who was not physically able to come to the top of the boat where the talking took place. (perhaps a speaker in the indoor area might be a future consideration?) We were able to find and view a small pod of whales and learnt so much about them and the rules that the company follows to try to have as little impact as possible on them. The staff have a map where they write where the boat goes and what is seen and various spots along with all the staff members names. The almost 5 hour tour went smoothly. Included is complimentary digital photography by web link access of the scenery and animals as well as an option to have a group photo taken on the boat. What a great idea! There were 6 of us in total. Everyone was pleased. This tour company has put a lot of thought and care into creating a great experience. I suppose it would have been less thrilling if we didnt have time with the whales. We are grateful we did. Thank you POW. I have and will recommend you to others.

lindainbc Thank you so much for your kind words and for the 5 stars. We strive to make everyone's experience as memorable and comfortable as possible. The whales are always at the centre of what we do, so our naturalists' passion and drive for conservation is crucial. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour and hope to welcome you back again in the future.

It was a great day. The boat was only half booked so super roomy felt very covid safe. The crew was lovely, very friendly, extremely knowledgeable and so fun, like I’d be friends with them lol. You can tell they genuinely love what they do and they are so happy to share the knowledge with you. We got to see some hump back whales and were able to get a lot of great photos in addition to the ones they emailed all of us as part of the experience. It was a really great way to spend the morning. I would highly recommend it, and definitely with this company!

Oh my God, what an adventure! I have always wanted to do a whale watching trip, so even tho I was travelling solo I couldn’t pass up the chance to do this while I was in Vancouver. We saw sea lions, porpoises, humpback whales (a mother and calf!! Incredible!) and no less than THREE pods of orcas!

The crew onboard (Anthony, Wilma, Sandy, Ashley and Sylvia) were so friendly and informative and made the experience so enjoyable. In particular Wilma, who was taking care of the front of the boat, was a fountain of knowledge and her enthusiasm and excitement was so infectious! It’s not an inexpensive day out and we were out for about 4.5 hours, but honestly it’s 100% worth it and I will be recommending Prince of Whales to everyone I know who visits Vancouver or Victoria.

As a bonus, the boat leaves from Granville island which is a great spot with loads of cute shops to have a wander round before and after your boat trip, and a short walk from Kitsilano beach. They are not currently serving food on the boat (except for complimentary tea and coffee I think), so I highly recommend stopping by the market on the island for a delicious sandwich to bring on the boat).

They also have a professional photographer on board who takes AMAZING photos of everything you see so that you can concentrate on enjoying the moment! They are too big to upload here and I only have videos of the whales but take a look at their Instagram page to get an idea of how great the photos are.

Thank you Wilma and all the crew for an unforgettable day!

I live in Vancouver and have seen Orcas and Humpbacks in the wild without being on these tours, however, my sister was in town so we decided to hop on the half day Whale Watching from Vancouver. It was absolutely incredible and for the price, I would highly recommend going on this adventure.

The crew was phenomenal. Ashley, Emily, Mairead, Sandy, and Anthony were all extremely knowledgeable and kept giving us little tidbits about the area and how the whales behave, etc. They answered all questions we had and were very personable.

We ended up seeing 9 Humpback whales (6 in one spot and then 3 more when we came back around), 2 Stellar sea lions, 3 California sea lions, a few porpoises and a pod of 6 Orcas. We even got to see the matriarch, Artemis, chase a porpoise. On the way back in, we saw a beautiful sunset. It was a perfect day with a stellar crew and as I said before, I would highly recommend going whale watching with the Prince of Whales. I know I will go again.

We considered this excursion a big success. We saw both orcas and humpbacks, as well as seals and sea lions. The crew was very engaging and shared a lot of interesting info. They also knew when to keep quiet (whenever the whales were visible). Definitely recommend this taking this larger boat as well. We were able to spread out, roam around and go inside to get out of the wind if we felt like it, whereas in smaller zodiacs you're stuck in your seat for the whole tour.

Absolutely fantastic experience. So so lucky to find a pod of orcas within the first 45 mins and they were with us for the next hour. Quite unbelievable, a real privilege.

The whole team were fantastic from booking onwards, very friendly and courteous, highly knowledgeable with an easy conversational way of imparting their knowledge.

A special mention to Steven and Kerry girl Rebecca, as we interacted mainly with them but that is not to overlook the rest of the crew who were equally impressive especially in the sighting of the orcas and a later grey whale - eagle eyed indeed!!!

We can only thank you all for what was a truly memorable experience. We were spoilt by the sightings.
