    An unforgettable experience
Great little company and well worth doing. Great views of whales and very knowledgeable staff. We took the semi covered boat which was perfect, It was a very rough journey but we saw multiple whale breaches.

    Excellent tour and guides
We saw more whales and sea lions than I could count. It started off great and got better. I was surprised to have seen so many orcas for so long. Unlike most tours, there was very little downtime without wildlife. The guide and boat driver were both incredibly well-informed, enthusiastic, and very nice people. We happened to do this tour during a heat wave in Vancouver, so everyone on the boat was overdressed. I would love to do this again with the same tour company when it isn't so hot.

    AMAZING!!!!!
Just needed to write a review for this trip, I don't usually do reviews but couldn't ignore this one. We went out with Vanessa and Rodriguez, both really knew their stuff and Vanessa was so enthusiastic, I mean who wouldnt be, doing a job like that. We saw both Orca and Humpback Whales, both encounters were amazing, firstly not only did we see Orca, but witnessed them hunting 2 harbour porpoises, then celebrating their success by breaching and tail slapping, I did feel a little sad for the porpoises but nature is nature. We then had an encounter with Humpbacks, Mother and calf, Vanessa was so excited as it was one of her favorites (Strike) with her new calf. We witnessed Strike nursing the calf and then later both started breaching and slapping the water, only one word for the whole experience AMAZING. Thank you for Vanessa and Rodriguez for a fantastic day.

A Great Trip seeing many different animals
Fantastic experience. Safety first was highlighted by Captain Tino and Naturalist Cheyenne. Then off we went directly to an Orca pod that had been spotted out in the middle of the strait. Stopped on the way to remove a helium balloon floating on the Salish Sea. These balloons are TERRIBLE for the wild life. One hour of observing from a safe distance then allotted time was up -- so on we went to see Stinky Rocks . AMAZING huge elephant sea lion and smaller stellar seals basking in the sun. On through several passes, past eagle nests and finally observed the cormorant nests on Gabriola cliffs. We learned a great deal about the animals in the area, the environmental impact of human activities and the good news about populations rebounding thanks to conservation efforts. Our 9 year old grand daughter enjoyed it too. All in all a wonderul trip.

    Bad Decision
June 11 my husband and I took the closed boat tour in the morning. We originally planned for the afternoon but the 3;30 tour was cancelled. We were advised that the tour would take a different route due to the wind and safety. For the next 4 hours we flew across the water while the boat slapped hard on the water basically non stop. I liken it to riding a wild bronco for 4 hours without a break. The 11 people on board were quiet and we all hung on tightly to the rail in front of us. We slowed a few minutes to view harbour seals and then again to navigate high waves. The high waves were frightening. We slowed again to see Eagles in a tree and right back to the slamming on the water. Both my husband and I were shaken and sore when we left the boat. We've been on many whale tours but this was the first negative one. I agree totally with the one young single lady on the tour with us , when I asked her how she felt- she described the experience as "Harsh". I spoke to the girls in the office and shared how miserable the experience was for us and asked for a refund. Their office manager got back to me and said after discussing it with the crew that they said it wasn't "That Bad". I dare say it really was. One of their office staff said 'It shouldn't have happened" She was right. The morning should have been cancelled. The office manager told me my experience didn't warrant a refund and I asked to speak to her manager, but she said that was the owner and refused to give me their name or number. She assured me she would have them call me, but they never did. She sent me an email address which I assume was the owners so I wrote to them explaining from the beginning what happened to us. I asked them to never put another person through what we went through. They never responded. I'm sure they have many positive experiences on days when the wind is mild and the seas are calm. But unfortunately, that certainly wasn't our experience. When you run a company like this, it's important to hear what your customers are saying and be aware of their personal experience. Their comfort and safety should be the most important aspect of your business. I absolutely believe they should have cancelled that morning tour and at the very least refunded our money. I also believe the owner should have acknowledged my email. There is so much more detail I could say, but it would be too long . For those of you deciding on whether or not to post this- it's important to let people know all aspects of the experience they could be buying in to. Just saying all the nice fluffy stuff is misleading and dishonest

Our captain and naturalist we're so knowledgeable and eager to make it trip a great one. We all learned so much. Saw seals, sea lions, eagles, orcas and humpbacks. An added bonus was the clear, calm weather, which can't always be the case. Outstanding trip!

    Beautiful Humpback Whale
The best part of our tour was seeing Potamus the humpback whale! It was amazing. We started off with a group of 5 orcas. Further on we found the humpback whale, Potamus. He was sleeping for about 15 minutes and then he woke up and started slapping his tail on the water. He must've done this about 15 times, it was so exciting and a once in a lifetime experience for me and my daughter. We also saw a turkey vulture, and harbour seals. Rodrigo and Allie were our Captain and Guide. There were both very knowledgeable and friendly. We were very happy that we came for this tour. We would highly recommend this. My daughter, Jenn who is 40, took a screenshot of the video she got while Potamus was slapping his tale for us. Thank you so much, Allie and Rodrigo. 🐋 We loved it! 💙

    Excellent excursion.
We had originally booked our tour on the covered boat, but our reservation was changed to the open boat. We were given the option to keep our reservation or to cancel if we wanted. We went along on the open boat as it was a fairly nice day. We had a great experience and were fortunate to see a mother and calf humpback whale, a a pod of 5 Orcas and some sea lions. Rebecca was extremely knowledgeable and told us so much about the whales and sea lions. She is really passionate about here work. Mateus, our captain was very friendly and did a great job of getting us around.

    Whale watching
We went on the semi closed top boat tour, the back area is easily large enough for everyone to view whales (10 people on our trip). Brad and Rodrigo were our guide and captain. They were awesome and so knowledgable! We loved hearing about the individual whales and saw zig zag and her calf. We stayed with them for around an hour and whilst we didn’t get to see any orcas we still loved it! And got to see harbour seals! We would definitely recommend this to anyone whose in the area was a highlight of our trip!

Wonderful experience, beautiful scenery, very knowledgeable staff. Saw orcas, sea lions, seals, otters and eagles. A very memorable trip, highly recommend it, well worth the money, felt very safe and really appreciate that the team genuinely cares very much about the marine life.

Wonderful tour. I definitely do not recommend this for anyone who has back or neck pain, dizziness, or a concussion history as the boat ride out was incredibly painful when the ocean was rough. Well worth the $$ to see the amazing whales and our tour guide (Naturalist) and Captain were amazing even when ignorant sailors tried to ruin our experience.

We appreciate the great review! Correct, our tours are not recommended for anyone with back or neck problems as the waves can be a little bouncy at times depending on the weather. We are always looking out for our whales and educating others boaters about safely operating around them. Thank you again!

I loved this. I booked the seaplane package to come over from vancouver and was pleased with how easy it was to book.
I checked in fine at the office and came back later to get suited up in our survival suits for the boat. I wasnt entirely sure what kind of boat to expect when I booked it but was super excited that it was a fast rib boat as I hadnt ever been on one before. I sat at the front and loved every second, it wasnt super bumpy, but it was super fun.
We only saw 1 humpback right at the very end, but at the end of the day we were lucky to see a whale
Would recommend 100%, the entire experience was great
Thank you

Excellent shop staff, the onboard biologist and the captain were great to us today. These people know what they're doing and placed us near to a group of different pods of Orcas having a tea party, or socializing as we know it. The open boat provided many opportunities to photograph the whales as they majestically frolicked close by. The boat was in the middle of at least a dozen Orcas all within easy camera range.

Thank you "Rebecca", "Shy", and "Rodrigo". You have provide me with a great adventure! Thank you

We and our teen grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed our whale watching trip . Both the guide and driver were professional, engaging and informative and made sure that we had the best experience possible. We saw lots of whales and also enjoyed seeing seals, sea lions and a beautiful cliff-face cormorant rookery. This was our 5th whale watching excursion and our second trip with Vancouver Island Whale Watching; they are the best by far! The waters around Nanaimo are beautiful and even if we had failed to spot any whales it would have been a great day.

Amazing experience. Got to see a variety of wildlife and learned a lot from our guide. Our guides were super friendly, approachable and we appreciated the priority of our tour experience OVER time. I appreciated the conservation education also shared during this tour, especially with my teens on the tour, to initiate and open minds to issues outside of our normal daily living. Thank you and I highly recommend this tour!

We did an afternoon excursion, open boat, on a bright sunday afternoon, in the goofy red preserver suits the tour group provides for its open-uncovered boat parties. We drove about an hour south of Nanaimo at 50kmh or so, and found a pod of orcas! We followed them for about an hour. It was wonderful. The naturalist was great, friendly, and full of information. Great to see passionate young people doing their thing, and making a buck. Worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Hi Bryce, thank you for leaving us a review! It's great to hear that you found the anti-exposure suits provided for the open boats fun! They really help to cut the cold from the wind and any splashing you might face on the water. Finding all that wildlife must have been great for you as well! Thanks again for the review.

What an awesome day! Humpbacks and Transient Orcas plus some seals for a bonus. We had a fantastic day and the staff were awesome. Think our boat was out for a lot longer than expected (no shortcuts at all). Learned a ton as well.. our Naturalist was super patient and shared a ton of knowledge. Our Captain (Val) was a real pro and made the ride fun and exciting (with just the right amount of splashing to make it a fun ride)!

Thank you for the amazing review! We are so happy to hear you have a great time on the water. It's always a nice treat when we get both orcas and humpbacks in one trip. Sometimes we do have to travel a bit to find our whales, but we are happy to hear you think it's well worth it. We look forward to seeing you again one day.

We had the amazing and beautiful experience of taking the open boat tour this past October. Val was our Marine Naturalist and was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, displaying a true passion and love for her Job. We got a chance to see two separate pods of Hump Back Whales, and with every surfacing, every blow and every Tail Slap, we were further wrapped up in the shear beauty and amazement that this tour offered. Also having a chance to see Bald Eagles, Seals and Sea Lions, helped to round out this not to be missed experience. Thanks again to all the staff at Vancouver Island Whale Watch and can't wait till we get to be out on the water with you again!!!!

I did two tours per day during two days and saw so much. Every tour I was with naturalist Carmen/captain Dave and we had fun everytime. Three out of the four tours we say killer whales and all tours we say humpbacks. I was lucky to see breaching humpbacks (mother and calf). humpbacks swimming over to our boat, breaching killer whales, spyhopping and killer whale Jack had evening snack in his mouth.

Would absolutely join them again if I'm ever back on the island.
