About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Al G0 contributionsIt’s the expertise of the crewSo much depends on the crew’s ability to not just find the whales (and we saw a pod of orcas and a trio of humpbacks) but also to help you understand what you are seeing. Joseph and Desarae really made this an amazing experience: it is a privilege to see these wild creatures and the care the outfit take to ensure these majestic whales thrive while still helping us as humans appreciate them is fantastic.Written November 1, 2024
- MOYASOOTY0 contributionsWonderful day out with mischief!Rodrigo guided us safely and Desiree gave great commentary! Even though the weather was bleak the whales did not care and we were in for quite the treat! My favourite was counting 22 tail slaps and then seeing a whale fluke loom large beside one of the open boats! The company seems to have a good philosophy around avoiding more endangered species and encouraging less noise - very hard in such a busy shipping area! A wonderful tour that I would highly recommend!Written October 11, 2024
- 220annei0 contributionsNot to be missed! This was an absolutely brilliant experience! Val, the marine naturalist, was very knowledgeable and experienced and able to share her enthusiasm with our group. We were very lucky in getting good sightings of about 9 separate humpbacks, plus harbour seals, sea lions and other marine life. Full marks to Joseph, the captain of the RIB too. Cannot recommend highly enough!Written September 25, 2024
- Pioneer154729431840 contributionsFun and enthusiastic guided tourGreat enthusiastic guides! Awesome stuff. Saw all the humpback behaviours which felt really rare and exciting. Thank you Aly and Rodrigo 🙂Written September 21, 2024
- chriszV3470PR0 contributionsMade our vacation even more amazing!!We enjoyed the semi-covered vessel for this August 21st tour. While the waves were quite choppy, our guides were amazing in locating multiple humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and harbour seals. They were also very knowledgeable from start to finish and would hands down recommend Des and Vanessa for anyone wanting to go on this adventure.Written August 29, 2024
- I2519PQcarola0 contributionsA once in a lifetime experience. This eas a peak experience. We were lucky to see some whales breaching and an on board photographer captured great shots. I did get a little seasick though and wished I'd prepared better for that although it didn't ruin the trip.Written August 28, 2024
- Bhwerdal0 contributionsA fantastic trip we will never forget! It has been my daughter's dream most of her life to go whale watching. After looking at many reviews & different options, we chose Vancouver Island Whale Watch & we are so thankful we did! We did the 3:30 sailing on the covered boat. We went back & forth many times about which boat to go on, as my daughter has a tendancy to get motion sick & we weren't sure if it would make a difference (see below for details if you're trying to figure this out too!). Val & Rodrigo found a group of 3 humpbacks very quickly & we spent an hour watching them. We then found a mom & calf...and then a lone whale on the way back (as well as seals, sea lions, & birds!). Val & Rodrigo were absolutely wonderful guides....obviously caring about us as their guests & about the whales! We were excited to purchase stickers for 2 of the whales we saw that day! Our only disappointment was to not see Orcas, but we know that is never a guarantee! Thank you so much Val & Rodrigo, your joy & passion for what you do is contagious & we so enjoyed our trip! Regarding sea sickness for those who are looking for that info like we were.... To start, all the windows were closed on the boat which made it quite warm inside, which tends to make the movement worse. Once we picked up speed it quickly cooled off & was quite comfortable. I wouldn't say my daughter didn't get at all sick, but it was very manageable & she was enjoying the trip. When we found the first group of whales, she went to the back to take pictures & was just fine. When she had to come back in for us to go fast again, it was the same problem...windows closed, no airflow, feels sick. At this point it had compounded a bit so it was worse. In hindsight, I would have had her stay outside until we got going (2 people were allowed to stay out). When we found the mom & calf, Rodrigo positioned the boat for us to best be able to see which is wonderful. Unfortunately, that time it was parallel to the waves & the constant rolling was making it really bad for my daughter. When I mentioned this to Val, she immediately got us a few ginger candies (we had already been using our own as well) & talked to Rodrigo. He repositioned the boat to be facing the waves (in a way that we could still see the whales!) & it was immediately much better. After that, my daughter stayed in the back while we were moving & she was totally fine.Written August 27, 2024
- russ2720 contributionsWonderful experience with humpback whales and moreWent on the 10:30 am semi-covered whale watch with captain Tino and naturalist Aly, with my 4-year old daughter. The weather was perfect and we had a spectacular day, particularly interacting with humpback whales Kelpie and then Grizzly. Grizzly was particularly performative and did a lot of jumping and fin flapping. We also saw sea lions, seals, vultures and a bald eagle. We also learned a lot about the ocean life in the Salish Sea.Written August 13, 2024

- jenniferpB1138EX0 contributionsAmazing whale watching experienceVery enjoyable trip with Vancouver Island Whale Watch on the semi-covered boat! Our guide Hayley was knowledgeable and engaging and our captain Tino was excellent. We saw 2 groups of orcas, as well as harbour seals and sea lions. I would 100% recommend this company for whale watching trips in the Nanaimo area — hope to go out again someday!Written July 13, 2024
- sarah_mackenzie190 contributionsInspirational and exciting trip!A really well engaging trip with Tino and Hayleigh for 4hrs which went past too quickly. Understanding the wildlife we saw and the important research supporting these amazing creatures was really inspiring. Spotted humpback whales, sealing, seal pups, bald eagles, turkey vulture and even a deer. Highly recommend 👌Written July 10, 2024
- Fi0nnualaK0 contributionsMagic From Start to Finish!!!We had a fabulous day out with Vancouver Island Whale Watch. Excuse my grainy Android pics which do not remotely do the experience justice. It has been a life goal of mine to see orcas since I was a little kid and we were barely out on the water for half an hour when we came across a little group of a mom and her two children whom we got to spend close to an hour with as Hayley and Tino told us interesting info about them. Hayley, our guide, and Tino, the driver were both such assets who helped us see and learn about so much. Later we saw some humpbacks including a lunge feeding humpback which was a really special treat. Then we got to visit with some boisterous sea lions who were all bickering and bellowing adorably. On our way back in we saw an eagle dive into the water and try and fail to pull up a fish much too big for it. We also saw a juvenile bald eagle on its nest and dozens of cormorants hanging out on cliffs. It truly was a magical day and the experience was smooth from start to finish. The covered boat was a plus as it had a bathroom on board so I'd recommend trying to get on that if you can. 100% recommended company. Thanks, Hayley and Tino! Looking forward to seeing the undoubtedly much better pics Hayley took on our perfect day out.Written July 4, 2024
- zoe19830 contributionsGreat tripWe very much enjoyed our trip. We found it east to book the trip online and good information over the phone on how to find their office and where to park. We got to see some Orca and Sealions.Written June 26, 2024
- Phill_iphone0 contributionsMost amazing dayWe had previously had an unsuccessful trip out from Victoria so decided to try a different area and booked with Vancouver Island Whale Watching. Everything was simple and professional from the online booking to checking in for our tour. We made our way down to our boat for the 3-5 hour trip with our naturalist Aly, and met our boat captain Tino, both were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Within 30 minutes we were treated to the show of our lives from a humpback called coyote, at 40ft long he was a gentle giant. This has to have been one of the most memorable times of our lives something that could never be replicated. We managed to see 3 confirmed humpbacks and 2 others but only for a few moments. We also saw Bald eagle, Stellar Sealions and Cormorants. We cannot express how great the team were and how great our trip was thank you.Written June 25, 2024

I had such a great day today out whale watching! I know there is a lot of luck and chance involved because no one can guarantee what nature will or will not do, but both our boat driver and our guide were excellent. The driver did a great job of searching our animals for us, and making sure we were in the vicinity of them without getting too close or disturbing them. Our guide, Ryan Uslu, was very informative about the animals when there was down time while we were searching for them or waiting for them to resurface. It was nice to be able to have facts and anecdotes to keep us entertained and to learn more. We ended up seeing Stellar Sea Lions, Harbour Porpoises, Humpback Whales, and Harbour Seals. It was an amazing experience!

Had a wonderful experience on the Open Boat Tour; with the rare chance of seeing three orcas hunting a harbour seal right next to our boat! The harbour seal fortunately lived another day, by hopping up onto the back of our vessel and staying out of reach until the orcas left the area.
Our naturalist Cheyenne was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area as well as the local wildlife. Our Captain was calm and cordial.
Would recommend the Semi-Covered Boat Tour for those with back problems, as the journey crossing the Strait can be a bit rough; but perfect for those wanting a thrilling journey.

Of the more than 50 companies operating on the BC south coast, a few rise above the others for quality and commitment.
Vancouver Island Whale Watch is one of them. They are extremely dedicated to the animal’s wellbeing along with customer enjoyment and safety.
There is more to whale watching, than a fun boat ride to see some animals in the wild and I come at this from an entirely different perspective, than the typical customer. I have a lifetime on the BC coast, so am interested in marine wildlife and how we treat them.
I have examined all the BC operators by studying crew bios, visiting docks, looking at boats, reviewing Transport Canada reports and most importantly, closely watching their on the water activities and behavior.
Vancouver Island Whale Watch stands out.

Wonderful experience, beautiful scenery, very knowledgeable staff. Saw orcas, sea lions, seals, otters and eagles. A very memorable trip, highly recommend it, well worth the money, felt very safe and really appreciate that the team genuinely cares very much about the marine life.

Wonderful tour. I definitely do not recommend this for anyone who has back or neck pain, dizziness, or a concussion history as the boat ride out was incredibly painful when the ocean was rough. Well worth the $$ to see the amazing whales and our tour guide (Naturalist) and Captain were amazing even when ignorant sailors tried to ruin our experience.

We appreciate the great review! Correct, our tours are not recommended for anyone with back or neck problems as the waves can be a little bouncy at times depending on the weather. We are always looking out for our whales and educating others boaters about safely operating around them. Thank you again!

I loved this. I booked the seaplane package to come over from vancouver and was pleased with how easy it was to book.
I checked in fine at the office and came back later to get suited up in our survival suits for the boat. I wasnt entirely sure what kind of boat to expect when I booked it but was super excited that it was a fast rib boat as I hadnt ever been on one before. I sat at the front and loved every second, it wasnt super bumpy, but it was super fun.
We only saw 1 humpback right at the very end, but at the end of the day we were lucky to see a whale
Would recommend 100%, the entire experience was great
Thank you

Excellent shop staff, the onboard biologist and the captain were great to us today. These people know what they're doing and placed us near to a group of different pods of Orcas having a tea party, or socializing as we know it. The open boat provided many opportunities to photograph the whales as they majestically frolicked close by. The boat was in the middle of at least a dozen Orcas all within easy camera range.
Thank you "Rebecca", "Shy", and "Rodrigo". You have provide me with a great adventure! Thank you

We and our teen grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed our whale watching trip . Both the guide and driver were professional, engaging and informative and made sure that we had the best experience possible. We saw lots of whales and also enjoyed seeing seals, sea lions and a beautiful cliff-face cormorant rookery. This was our 5th whale watching excursion and our second trip with Vancouver Island Whale Watching; they are the best by far! The waters around Nanaimo are beautiful and even if we had failed to spot any whales it would have been a great day.

Amazing experience. Got to see a variety of wildlife and learned a lot from our guide. Our guides were super friendly, approachable and we appreciated the priority of our tour experience OVER time. I appreciated the conservation education also shared during this tour, especially with my teens on the tour, to initiate and open minds to issues outside of our normal daily living. Thank you and I highly recommend this tour!

We did an afternoon excursion, open boat, on a bright sunday afternoon, in the goofy red preserver suits the tour group provides for its open-uncovered boat parties. We drove about an hour south of Nanaimo at 50kmh or so, and found a pod of orcas! We followed them for about an hour. It was wonderful. The naturalist was great, friendly, and full of information. Great to see passionate young people doing their thing, and making a buck. Worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Hi Bryce, thank you for leaving us a review! It's great to hear that you found the anti-exposure suits provided for the open boats fun! They really help to cut the cold from the wind and any splashing you might face on the water. Finding all that wildlife must have been great for you as well! Thanks again for the review.

I'm confused about the time scheduling. Why does it say 10:30 am tour and then other times beside it (10:30, 12, 15:30)?
Written July 14, 2019
Hi, we are currently running the 10:30am and 3:30 pm (15:30) trips but we switch to only one 12:00pm departure in the fall and spring.
