About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- spiggy50 contributionsWhaletasticWhat a truly fantastic 3 hours. Captain Ian was very knowledgeable speaking about all the wildlife we saw. Obviously the high lights being the orcas & Humpbacks. We saw 2 pods of orcas and a couple of humpbacks. The Zodiac boats are fun and I felt very save the whole of the 3 hours. We were very lucky with the weather and the ocean was so calm. We wore plenty of layers and then was also given a floatation suit to wear. Thank you so much Captain Ian and Molly in bookings.Written October 11, 2024
- soniamI4667DV0 contributionsWow, what an experience!I highly recommend the whale watching tour by Zodiac. Our group had Kate who was excellent in navigating the areas for sightings of humpbacks, killer whales, seals and sea lions. We were able to capture some great photos! Kate’s knowledge and commentary was very interesting. Our group had such a fantastic time as there was a lot of activity to be seen on the day. A truly memorable experience.Written September 25, 2024
- DAVID S0 contributionsExhilarating Whale Watching TourWe were lucky enough to be on a Zodiac Whale Watching Tour with operator Kate, who went above and beyond to give us the best experience we could have, seeing multiple humpbacks, orca’s,seals and sea lions. The whole experience was well organized, safe, easy to do and exhilarating. Thanks KateWritten September 22, 2024
- luv2travelCalgary_AB0 contributionsOnce in a lifetime experience! My husband, daughter and I had the most amazing time on the Sunset Zodiac tour with Springtide on Friday, Aug 30. We were provided with full length “life jacket” suits which kept us warm, safe and dry while we were on the water. I’d recommend still wearing layers and a hat as it does get chilly out there, especially once the sun goes down, and when moving fast. Captain Ian made the zodiac ride super fun while still keeping us safe and he provided lots of info when we stopped for viewings. The water was glassy calm and sunset on the water was absolutely spectacular. We were lucky enough to come across many seabirds, see a shimmering bait ball and be checked out by a pod of seal lions who came right up to our boat to see what we were doing. The highlight of our 3+ hour tour was finding ourselves amongst 5-6 humpbacks, hearing their exhalations and seeing them gracefully skim the surface feeding before before seeing the classic whale tale dives. Simply incredible!! Captain Ian did a fantastic job of making sure both sides of the boat got a front seat view and he was very patient ensuring we got all the time we could with these beautiful sea creatures. The highlight of our vacation for sure!Written August 31, 2024
- Picturesmith0 contributionsAmazing experience, couldn’t have been any betterAbsolutely amazing, the crew were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and they guided us to a pod of Orcas, seals, sea lions, bald eagles and even a humpback whale too. One of the most memorable days of my life.Written August 25, 2024
- sharleneg3030 contributionsTwo thumbs up for this experience!!Absolute great time! The weather was rainy but the whales cooperated and gave us a show. I cannot say enough about our guide Liam. He was so knowledgeable and informative . He made the voyage so memorable. Take this tour- you won’t be sorryWritten August 24, 2024
- kimberleyb350 contributionsLife changing, humbling experience.Incredible, once in a lifetime experience. PSA, when the captain says the front is bumpy, they’re not exaggerating. I felt like my brain was being scrambled, but the whole trip was 1000000% worth it! Our captain, Ian, took us out quite far to search for a large pod of humpback whales and we were not disappointed. After seeing a couple dozen whales fairly close up, and riding beside 3 whales for several minutes while they played in the water flipping their fins and waving at us, we turned to head back. The time watching whales was about 30 minutes. We suddenly veered off path heading out a different direction. That’s when we saw it. A super playful whale breaching the water. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and one we wouldn’t have gotten on the larger boat, which wouldn’t have been able to change course so easily. We stayed with the whale for about 10 more minutes and then headed back. Truly life changing and humbling experience.Written July 26, 2024
- 654rayo0 contributions100% recommend SpringtideTruly amazing experience. Ian our captain from Wigan was exceptional he was knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of his job. He advised where to sit if you didn’t want to get wet !! Although think we all got wet at some point and that just adds to the fun. We had a 10am trip and there were 12 of us on the zodiac. It was a really warm day so didn’t add any extra layers under or suits. We all took our seats and off we went in search of orcas? We travelled a huge distance but eventually came across three pods of orca it was amazing managed to use the GoPro to capture our experience. This tour suited our party of 4 50-55. 100% recommend Springtide for your whale watching tourWritten July 21, 2024
- derekaV2475SV0 contributionsAwesome time to be outThe tour was wicked. Our group had a great time on the zodiac. The skipper Jasper was awesome and made sure we saw as much as possible. Beaty way to arrive back to Victoria at sunset.Written June 24, 2024

- Billyfish210 contributionsFriendly and knowledgeable crewWe booked an early morning departure. From the moment we walked in to book, there was a friendly atmosphere. Because it was off season I think we managed to book at short notice. The vessel had a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating as well as a bathroom and complimentary hot beverages. We were out on the water for about 15 minutes before we saw our first whales. There were so many and the crew talked us through what to look out for and answered all of our questions. We saw sea lions and seals and to top it off we saw a pod of orca. Thank you so much for a great trip.Written October 9, 2023
- sharon s0 contributionsA beautiful lucky day!Our crew was excellent! Lots of information about all the whales! Very caring for the tourists. Next time I’ll have cash to tip them. We saw 7 humpbacks and 10 killer whales.Written September 22, 2023
- fadokvalerie0 contributionsfabulous experience in nature on a Zodiac with TysonThis was my third attempt to whale watch in my trip to Vancouver Island. Ferry didn't run for my first booking, so I missed it. The second tour was canceled. But the third time was a charm. I am so glad that I had this experience today. Our captain and guide was Tyson, and he was amazing. The Zodiac was a lot of fun, and we must have seen at least 6 humpback whales. We also saw many sea lions and harbor seals, as well as birds galore. I share my favorite picture from this trip. I highly recommend this company and Tyson!Written September 15, 2023
- wgsutherland0 contributionsA Stellar Afternoon!Had an exceptional afternoon on the water yesterday with the fabulous Captain Ian, Captain Yves, and Naturalist Caitlyn! We've searched for whales and other marine wildlife with this company many times over the years, and it is never a disappointment. So well organized and excellent customer service! Their vessels are comfortable and safe . . . second to none. We were on the Marauder IV and there are plenty of places for excellent viewing on the vessel. Take your pick of top, inside, front, or back. Safety is always uppermost in the crew's minds and we felt well looked-after. Yesterday, we had fantastic sightings of three different groups of humpbacks, and an amazing time at Race Rocks viewing hundreds of sea lions. At all times, Captain Ian maneuvered the vessel safely so that we had the best views while being respectful of the wildlife. We were kept very well informed by Yves and Caitlyn with respect to what we were seeing without disturbing our viewing. We typically have done our whale-watching in the summer months. This Fall trip was outstanding, exhilarating, and exciting!Written October 28, 2021
- CJCamano0 contributionsOutstanding Customer ServiceAlthough I wasn’t able to take a trip with Spring Tide I want to commend Captain Ian and the office staff for excellent customer service. There was a bit of a snafu with my booking which was handled very efficiently and with good humour. I will definitely book with them again!Written June 2, 2021

This tour company was a last minute choice when our original whale watching tour cancelled. We appreciated Springtide was willing to negotiate price, and get the price for 8 people down close to the amount we were to pay with original company. It was convenient to walk to the tour office from our ship. The staff on the tour boat were very knowledgeable about the wildlife, and the whales that they have named in the area. Once on the boat, it was hard to find a seat where you could see without having to stand the entire time. In order to see a whale blow hole, or tail, it was necessary to stand up to see around the people already standing. We saw a total of four whales, and really just the blow hole, back fin and tail. We had many more whale sightings from our cruise ship. This company was an excellent provider, I just wouldn’t recommend spending the money if you are on a cruise ship from Alaska. You should see more whale sightings while on the cruise ship.

Dear Liney,
Thank you for choosing SpringTide and for sharing your experience. We are grateful for your feedback and we apologize for any disappointment you experienced during your tour. We are pleased to hear that we could accommodate your group at a reasonable price and that your found our staff very knowledgeable. However, we're sorry to hear that you found the seating limited. We never book Marauder IV at full capacity - this is to allow for enough space for all passengers to move around the vessel however your feedback is important to us and helpful moving forward.
Regarding the visibility issues you encountered, nature can be unpredictable but we strive to provide the best opportunities for wildlife sightings, still there are no guarantees.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or if there is anything else we can do to enhance your experience.

We went out on the covered boat not sure what to expect. Well let me say this was life changing! We saw WAY more whales then we expected and just LOVED the information that our naturalist, Heather, shared. She was just as excited as we were and had a really fun way of explaining what we were seeing and asking questions that carried into stories about stuff we couldn't see but really helped us understand why these whales do what they do.We spent tons of time with them, and we also just watched them in silence to hear them breathing. Just WOW. The captain was really good at figuring out where we needed to be and even tried to turn the boat the right way so we weren't staring into the sun. We got some really awesome pictures! There was lots of space on the boat and we could sit inside to warm up too. I can't wait to come back out with these guys again some time. They seem to really love their job and working together, and made sure we felt like part of the team for the day. Super friendly! Thanks Ian. Thanks Heather.

Thank you for the great review! I am always so happy when others share the feeling that this can change your whole view of life. It is magical when we are lucky enough to experience these awesome wild animals within the rugged beauty of the Salish Sea. Our vessel the Marauder IV provides a comfortable platform to become immersed in the this wild marine world and as you saw the crew are excellent. In these times when we face more restrictions in day to day life it is a special moment to be able to safely step outside and take a moment to breathe some fresh air. We would love to see you again. Each time is always new and special.

It was a wonderful experience! The crew was very knowledge and able to answer all of my questions. They also did a great job at keeping everybody socially distanced and making sure everyone was wearing a mask when needed. We got to see three humpbacks, one of them came just feet away from the boat! It was a awesome experience and would highly recommend this tour to anyone in Victoria.

WOW. When I booked this tour I had no idea we'd have this much fun! I hoped we'd see whales but I never imagined we'd learn so much from our guides, and that their stories would be so entertaining! If you're on a tour with Heather, try to hang out near her. I've been on many whale watching tours around the world but never have I had such a great guide. Thank you! The boat is really comfortable. I loved how spacious it was even with 50-odd people on board. We spent time on all the different decks: we started on the back deck as we travelled out to the wildlife then moved to the front deck and went upstairs on the way back. Excellent viewing from everywhere. The captain, Ian, did an amazing job of keeping the whales at a respectful distance and even tried his best to keep the sun behind us for best photos. Everyone of the staff (in the office and on the boat) seemed really intent on making sure we had the best possible experience, and we really did! Thank you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us this feedback, World Traveller. It means so much to us!
Your experience, including your comfort on board, entertainment, and engagement with the ecosystem is a priority for us, and we are so glad that you enjoyed it to the fullest.
We will be sure to pass along your kind words to Ian and Heather as well. We are so proud of our staff and it’s great to hear that they are appreciated for their hard work.
Respecting the ocean critters is also a top priority at SpringTide, so thank you for noticing and also taking care. There are so many wonders to find out on the sea, so we hope you’ll be back someday to take in some more!
Sincerely,
Hannah

Everything about this experience was top notch for my wife and myself. Great people working here, from the young lady who took our reservation up to the Captain. I believe his name was Captain Marty. Speaking of Captain Marty, he was totally fabulous ….the people, like my wife and I, who watched the whales from on top where the Captain steers the ship, got to listen to him share his wisdom and his humor about the whales and much more. That was a unexpected treat for us on top.
We were able to see many Orcas (killer whales) popping in and out of the water. Unfortunately, they were not as close as we would have liked because they were located at this Naval Base and we had to keep our distance…200 or 400 meters, not sure which one. I thought I heard both numbers. But, it was still enjoyable to see them show themselves when they did. We stayed there tracking them for about 30 minutes. Then we headed to this place the Captain said the Humpbacks usually hang out. Guess what? He was right….there were about six to eight Humpbacks showing themselves to us. Much of the time you mostly see their fin tails, and none breached, but we didn’t mind. It was still exciting to see them pop up. And these whales were much closer so we also appreciated that. Didn’t have to concern ourselves with Government rules like we did with the Orcas. There were also a bunch of sea lions on the island where the Lighthouse was situated hanging out on the rocks there…no doubt doing their best to stay away from an Orca.
The trip was close to 3.5 hours long, and like I said, great people were taking care of us. I read some reviews where some whales would come up right next to the ship or breach….well that didn’t happen to us, but you take what you can get, right? You can’t control everything. My wife and I went home very content and very pleased we chose this Company to drop our money to.

What a wonderful experience with Springtide! It was our lucky day to witness 3 different species of whales on our chartered boat. We were warmly welcomed by our Captain Ian and Chief mate Yves. Our guides Heather and Morgan, as well as the volunteer guides, were informative and friendly, answering all of our questions with knowledge and passion. You can tell that they love what they do and the positivity was catching and radiated through the guests. I highly recommend this group. from planning with Joanne to the execution...it was fabulous!

Very friendly crew, our group got an upgrade for the boat, and fortunately the boat was not too big so the other passengers didn't stand in front of you the whole time. But the best part was that we were able to spot a humpback whale that was anything but shy and jumped in and out of the water for over 20 minutes - according to the SpringTide people, this was exceptional even for them. Very professional staff, know perfectly where marine life is in the bay.

On the day we went whale watching, the whales were quite far from the starting location in Victoria. This did not stop our intrepid guides from ensuring the best experience possible. It was a long, windy, and bumpy trip out to where the whales were, but the guides anticipated our need for extra clothing and provided everyone in the front of the boat with extra jackets (as well as lots of fascinating commentary on the local whales and their behaviors). Finally, we were able to locate a humpback whale and her calf! Even though we were running late for our return time, we still spent a good amount of time watching the whales (from a respectful distance, of course). We were able to see the breath from their spouts and their tales slapping the water! Meanwhile, the crew was very attentive to the physical needs of the passengers and passionate about sharing their knowledge! It was definitely worth the journey--just be prepared, dress warm, and bring medications for seasickness if needed!

We booked the zodiac tour to go whale watching with the family and had the most amazing time ever sailing with Tyson. We’ve been chasing humpbacks and orcas all around the world for years, going to South Africa, French Polynesia, Iceland and Quebec, all unsuccessful trips that left us disappointed and almost hopeless to ever see these mythical animals in real life. Yet, after only three hours with our amazing guide Tyson we saw two humpback whales, three to four orcas and lots of sea lions. Not only is the landscape breathtaking here but we’d also never been anywhere with as many animals in the water. Canada is truly beautiful and we are now convinced there is no better place to go whale watching than Vancouver Island and Victoria specifically. We were more than delighted with Tyson who went out of his way (a literal extra mile or so) to give us the best shot at seeing orcas, and we did ! On our way back, he didn’t hesitate either to make a little detour to spot the humpbacks, which, once again, we saw in all their majesty. This was a lifelong dream for us and we felt immensely privileged to be able to see all these animals in just one excursion. Any type of safaris (on land or water) always rely on luck with the animals, but a great guide who knows his way around and approaches the situation with equal professionalism, humour and genuine kindness can make a true difference in your experience. We also do not regret at all the zodiac tour over the traditional bigger boat tour as it was so much fun being closer to the water and riding the waves. Thank you again Tyson, we had the best day ever, and would definitely recommend your tour and this company to anyone desperate to see the beautiful marine wildlife this island has to offer !

Wow! Wow! Wow!
As a local (Victoria) tour guide, I wanted to host my 45+ year out of town friends to a Whale Watching Tour this past October 2023. The tour could not have been better and the Whale Watching crew were fantastic. We spotted seals, sea lions, a large herring ball, cormorants, eagles, and several hump back whales! I believe the hump back whale was feeding on the herring ball while we were stopped. While we watched the herring ball being dive bombed by several species of birds, a humpback whale breached about 100 feet from our tour boat. A few guests along with the whale watching company photographer caught the whale breaching both still shots and video. After the initial frenzied/happy responses from everyone aboard, guests shared both photos and videos amongst all those aboard.
What an incredible day. My three long time friends and I will never forget this tour. A huge thank you to all the staff on board. I highly recommend this tour to anyone or any group wanting to experience an incredible day on the water.

We are coming in on June 20th on Royal Caribbean Ovation. How close is the departure point to where the cruises dock?

Thinking of booking in late July. Which time of day is best for siting whales? I am assuming the type of boat does not improve odds. True?

We went in the afternoon in the faster boat. But all boats get close enough to see the whales. (We wanted the speed of the fast boat!)They had seen a lot of whales in the morning that day too, so I don't really know if the time of day matters. Maybe we were just lucky, but we saw many pods. I know that summer is whale watching season...so good luck! Seeing the whales were amazing!

The Norwegian Joy doesn't dock until 4:00 pm on June 7. I have six adults and one child that would like to go on the tour. Is that possible?
