- 486adrieneh0 contributionsWhat a Daythis is my second time with 5 star whale watching . I like support local companies and they do a great job. Whales are unpredictable but seeing three whales was super cool. The naturalist were awesome and the captain ( Andrew ) always knew where to go to find those beautiful creatures . Will definetly make another adventure with this company.Written December 3, 2024
- Christy W0 contributionsBeautiful and amazingThis was a great experience. We saw two different types of whales that came super close to the boat. The guides were all really knowledgeable and personable. I would totally recommend this for anyone.Written October 27, 2024
- B7648REmichaelk0 contributionsA Whale of a good time!We had a whale of an adventure. The crew seemed so disappointed to leave the whale area, as they knew the names of all the whales we saw!!! A Great morning with a wonderful crew. Pl;ease note its a somewhat rough boat ride getting there, but well worth itWritten September 30, 2024
- t0bik240 contributionsAwesome trip!We had a great time. We saw so many humpback whales, apparently unusual to see them in groups. They were slapping the water with their tales and doing cartwheels. The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful explaining what was happening and even identifying some of the whales we saw.Written September 24, 2024
- MAPerth210 contributionsGo with another boat companyThe booking process was great. Genevieve was just lovely. The boat trip itself was disappointing. The crew including the captain, were more interested in taking their own photos, often in front of paying clients. There was a yellow line next to the captain's area which so happened to be the best photographers area.. if you crossed it, you were told off like a child. I am a qualified skipper and have been recently on a number of other whale watching trips. This captain wanted the space to take his own photos. It wasbt a safety issue as the boat was not moving. The priority of the crew was disappointing. Also other boats didn't hang around were we were and they all saw orcas. .. they didn't even try. So don't believe the photos. We hung around most of the time by dormant humpbacks who weren't doing anything. The other boats moved on.Written September 22, 2024
- sderlla0 contributionsonce in a lifetime experiencethis is the fourth time we have used five star and each time our expectations were exceeded by leaps and bounds..not only are the staff knowledgeable but very friendly and courteous and it was obvious this wasn't a job but a life style. their passion was obvious and they are extremely careful to not infringe on the inhabitants of the ocean and were very respectful of those that reside there..for an unforgettable whale watching experience five star is my only choiceWritten September 10, 2024

- jameskO3263KR0 contributionsWe had a great time.I booked the larger Catamaran boat two weeks in advance. The idea was that the larger boat would be more stable, as some in my family get motion sickness. Eight days before the our trip, Five Star called me to say that their Cat was not going to be available, due to needing repair. They rebooked us on their other smaller boat. The day of the trip, was very windy. We had to wait to see if the Captain was going to call off the trip due to the wind/waves, but it went ahead. Because of the limited seating on board, we ended up sitting outside and some of our group, including myself, got soaked with sea spray due to the waves and wind. Aside from the spray, the boat handled the choppy waters well and no one got seasick. We did end up getting a very close encounter with a pod of Orcas and had a fun trip. I was disapointed though, that we had to pay extra $$, because Five Star changed the vessel.Written September 4, 2024
- r0khsarm0 contributionsConsistently Canceled and Disappointing Service - Avoid 5 Star Whale WatchingMy experience with 5 Star Whale Watching was incredibly frustrating. We booked a tour, but it was canceled multiple times. The first time, they claimed the boat was broken, and they didn’t even inform us in advance. To avoid this happening again, we requested a tour for the following week, and they assured us they would use their smaller boat to ensure it wouldn't be canceled. However, I was shocked when they called again, claiming the boat was broken once more! This level of unreliability and lack of professionalism is unacceptable. Instead of offering any compensation, they suggested we cancel and book with another company. I strongly advise against booking with 5 Star Whale Watching. There are other companies out there that value their customers and can provide a more reliable and professional service.Written August 9, 2024
- FarAway8017930 contributionsCreating Family memoriesWe had our entire family get together for several activities in the Victoria area and while it was a bit hectic to get 14 of us including 6 grandkids going in the same direction, it was a great experience. One of the highlights was our Whale watching trip on the morning of August 7. The "Shadow" accommodated 12 of us nicely and with the cabin we were able to keep kids warm in the cool environment on the ocean. The key to our trip was the staff of Five Star with Captain Gordon doing his utmost to find whales and maneuvering around Race Rocks in the currents so we could see seals and sea lions and Naturalist Mika telling us about the wildlife and keeping the younger kids entertained with books and stories we had a great 3 hours on the water. Unfortunately we did not see more than a fleeting glance of a whale and we really appreciated the offer of a repeat trip based on their guarantee. Being local, we plan on another great opportunity to get the family together that i know will be made even more special by our new friends at 5-star.Written August 9, 2024
- 669joshf0 contributionsA highlight of our family vacationOur family had a wonderful time on this tour. Gordon (Captain) and Mika (Naturalist) did a great job leading our adventure and leading us to wildlife. Our day out didn’t have much in terms of whales—one sleepy humpback who surfaced pretty regularly, and sadly no Orcas…but that’s how it goes sometimes. It’s a big sea, and as Mika said, sometimes spotting the whales is like finding a needle in a haystack. All in all, a memorable afternoon I’ll cherish for a lifetime. Thank you Gordon and Mika.Written August 8, 2024
- Connector239748370400 contributionsOrcas!I have been on 15 whale watch trips in my life. I have a degree in Biology and am a science teacher. I know a bit about whales. I have NEVER experienced such good service as I had from Gordon and Genevieve. WOW! SUPER NICE and knowledgeable. They made the trip more fun. I have waited 50 years to see Orcas and was lucky that Gordon found 4, including this mom and baby (pictured below). WELL WORTH THE COST! Thanks you two for caring about how good an experience you help to create.Written August 1, 2024
- roxanneq290 contributionsGreat sunset tour with small groupThis was a great tour! Our Captain, Gordon and Mika, the naturalist onboard, were knowledgeable, kept us safe and we saw several pods of Orcas on the sunset tour. We loved that it was a small group!Written June 30, 2024
- shellyh2890 contributionsFive star experience! This was an amazing experience with Gord as our pilot and Rianna as our expert on whales and the waters we explored. They both had so much info to share, welcomed questions and were just fun to be with. Both clearly had an abundance of respect and love for the whales and their habitat; and Gord had many years of experience to share with his passengers. We saw many whales! and it was just a thrilling adventure to be out on the water. I was grateful for the big jacket/life jacket as the water sprayed us.Written June 14, 2024

I highly recommend Five Star Whale Watching, their commitment to safety, customer service and responsible Whale Watching is second to none. My partner and I have taken tours with this company on a number of occasions and always had a wonderful time. From the pre-trip details and safety waiver (a standard practice in the Whale Watching industry) they provide, to the professional & friendly staff that great you at check in and their top notch Captains and Crew, the service and experience truly is 5 Star! They always put a large emphasis on safety and provide a thorough briefing when you check in and again before you board the vessel and when you first leave the dock. Throughout the trip the staff always have safety first and check to ensure everyone is doing well and enjoying themselves. On one trip one of our fellow guests was feeling a little squeamish and so the Captain slowed the boat and moved them to the back deck (less motion). The Crew kept checking on the fellow passenger for the rest of the trip. It is that type of dedication that is what impresses. I know they have also cancelled tours a couple of times that we had booked due to bad weather and then made sure we could book an alternative date or get our money back, again showing that they care more about safety than money, a rare trait these days. On our last trip in December we got to see Orcas and Humpbacks, it was an amazing experience!

We booked this whale watching excursion outside of the Royal Caribbean package, because it was less expensive. I was concerned it would be tough to get off the ship and get downtown Victoria to meet at the requested time. It was actually very EASY! They had buses outside the ship going every 15 minutes and it was a roundtrip paid price. The staff was very pleasant the greeted us and they directed us down to the ship. The captain and nature experts were extremely knowledgeable and very engaging with everyone. We were very fortunate to see humpback whales and killer whales. This was the highlight excursion of our cruise. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5 Star Whale Watching!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful review towards your experience and our crew!
We are happy that you found the process of getting to our office easy and efficient as well as boarding our vessel.
Thank you kindly for your acknowledgements towards our hard-working crew and Captain. We will certainly pass along your awesome review to our staff.
We are so glad you had the ability to encounter two amazing Salish Sea species, humpback whales and killer whales/orcas.
Thank you so much, and we would love to host you again in Victoria if you are visiting again.

We saw pod of orcas..amazing first whale watching experience. Very affordable and additional discounts was available, cheaper compared to other whale watching companies. The guy was very informative and explained amazing facts about whales and near-by area. Good customer service. Wish they add some zodiac boats to the fleet . Highly recommended.

Thank you for your review and glad to hear you had an amazing experience.
We purchased our vessel Salish Shadow as a huge step up from a Zodiac style vessel and it is superior in every way. Almost all the Whale Watching companies in Victoria are slowly moving away from Zodiacs. Salish Shadow provides all the benefits and thrills of a Zodiac but with the comfort & amenities of the larger vessels due to the fully heated cabin area, proper toilet and seating both inside & outside. It is faster, quieter, smoother, safer, more comfortable than a zodiac. As it is higher it also provides a much better viewing experience as well. In fact Salish Shadow is a new class of vessel for the local Whale Watching industry and one that is the envy of all that see her, especially on a cold wet day!
Thank you for your kind words about your guide and our customer service. We hope to see you on another tour in the future and thank you for choosing Five Star Whale Watching.

We had an incredible day with Five Star Whale Watching for Mothers Day. The crew and staff were amazing and took great care of all the guests, you can tell they truly care. We saw a Humpback close to Victoria, plus lots of Porpoise! However, the crew checked if anyone had time restrictions and then headed off to where Orcas had been found, what a bonus. We encounter over a dozen Orcas , which the crew explained were socializing as there was more than one pod. The Captain expertly and respectfully navigated the vessel around the whales keeping the appropriate distance. The knowledge Naturalists provided incredible information about the wildlife we encountered and also the area we visited, so informative, educational and inspirational! We would highly recommend this company anyone visiting Victoria and wanting to go Whale Watching. Just remember they are dealing with Wild Animals in their natural environment. Incredible and memorable day on the water.

Went on a recent tour with this company and once again I was not disappointed. From the great service at check in, to the pre-boarding presentation (packed with useful info if you bother to listen), to the enthusiastic and knowledgeable crew the experience was definitely Five Star!
The vessel is comfortable, spacious and the perfect design for whale watching as it has lots of seating inside and outside and unobstructed view on both the upper and lower level. The Captain and crew looked after everyone and made sure everyone was doing well, even when we encountered choppy seas, which you have to expect can occur when you are on the ocean. The conditions, though choppy at times due to the recent strong tides, were more than manageable for this vessel and everyone felt safe.
The Captain spotted some Humpbacks in the distance and slowed down and maintained a respectful distance at all times. This company practices what it preaches, respectful and responsible whale watching which is why I always go with them. They walk the walk, not just talk the talk. We got to see several majestic Humpbacks during our tour including a Mom & Calf, always a thrill :)
The crew kept everyone informed on what they were seeing and where the whales were. Andrew, Naturalist downstairs, gave us lots of narration on what the whales were doing, it was like having David Attenborough onboard, he even has the English accent :) He also provided lots of information about the local area and marine history and made the tour even more fun. He was willing to answer any questions and I was impressed with his overall knowledge and you could tell he was very passionate about his job.
On our way home we stopped to look at some Seals and Sea Lions, which was an added bonus.
Overall another incredible experience with this company and it won't be the last. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to partake in a respectful and responsible whale watching tour from Victoria.

Very knowledgeable about the area and history…we did see some humpbacks from a distance, they are massive so neat to see…we also so California and elephant seals - nice to see them in their own habitats and not stuck in a zoo - friendly host.
We did a sunset tour..very beautiful…
Remember to bring light winter coat, hat possible gloves as it does get very cold…they have a few winter coats but that’s it…

Both our captain and our guide were knowledgeable and gave us information about the whales and other wildlife. We were on the 12 person boat because our morning tour on the 40 person boat was canceled but in retrospect, this was a good thing... much easier to view the whales on a small boat and the boat traveled very fast.
During our crossing we experienced some VERY large swells and our captain handled them expertly. It was quite a fun ride.
This has nothing to do with Five Star Whale Watching whose service, equipment, and friendliness were great but you should really manage your expectations about what you will see in terms of whales. We saw Orcas and Humpbacks but regulations require that all boats stay 200 meters away from the whales. So, if you think you're going to see a whale breach 20 feet of the starboard bow, it aint gonna happen. But, it was a fun trip.

Booked a whale watching trip for May 31st and it was so much fun! We joined a few families with kids and rode their Supercat vessel. The captain and 2 naturalist guides were very professional, explained the safety features of the boat and shared very interesting details about whales and sea animals we saw on tour.
We saw a gray whale, 2 humpback whales and seals on an islet. Would have loved to see orcas but we weren’t able to on this tour. Maybe next time.
Giving a rating of 4 because I originally booked for a sunset package but it was rebooked. Otherwise, the whole experience was fantastic! Will definitely book with them again next time we’re back in Victoria. Great job!

We appreciated that the staff worked so hard to find the whales, and even extended our trips to do so. Staff checked in frequently to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying the experience. First time on the smaller vessel, and it was terrific!

Thank you for your review and kind words. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your recent tour with Five Star Whale Watching and had an amazing experience. Most of the time we can find Whales within our regular 3 hour tour but when necessary we will extend the tour if Whales are a little further away than usual or found later in the tour. We will make sure we pass on your comments to our staff and thank you again for such a terrific review!

Great trip in a good , stable boat.
We got to see Orcas and Hump Back Whales plus sea lions etc. The driver guide was very knowledgeable and had a genuine interest and affection for the animals and their environment. I thoroughly recommend this trip but as stated in other reviews, make sure you take warm clothes as it gets pretty chilly !

How far is your dock from the cruise ship docks ? Is there needed transportation to and from ?
Written June 10, 2019
We checked in at the office which is located around the corner from the Fairmont Empress Hotel. The dock is a short walk from there. I think you could walk to the dock from the cruise ship dock. It's just on the other side of the harbor. You probably need to check with the company as we had to check-in first.
