On October 18 2022, a group of four of us, all seniors, went on a whale watching tour with Prince of Whales tours (12:30 pm tour).
Short answer, it was fantastic!
As I am very prone to seasickness, having had a really bad experience in a smaller boat off of Tofino BC, I wanted to be on the largest boat available. Others in the party actually felt the same way that though they were not particularly prone to seasickness but were interested in creature comfort. We investigated a number of companies in Victoria at the time and decided on taking the 81 foot catamaran [pictures below] from Prince of Whales tours. It also helped that on that day there was hardly a cloud in the sky, the ocean in the area qas almost glassy and there was no wind. An absolutely super fantastic day for October. The boat proved to be a superb platform for viewing the whales with absolutely great stability and maneuverability. The whole crew were very informative and pleasant. A special shout out to Scott and Carol who can it tenuously provided whale information. Carol was absolutely unbelievable as she provided almost continuous verbal information at the front of the ship while we were viewing the various whales and other animals!. The photographer on board did a great job because she had a high quality camera with a long lens and all the photos were made available in digital form shortly after the cruise! In fact, there is absolutely no point of anyone taking their own photos of the whales and sea lions. We were lucky that day and saw a couple of Orcas and a number of humpback whales, including breaching (photos below). This was the highlight of our 4 Days in Victoria!

We had a wonderful time on our sailing with Prince of Whales. Very smooth and easy process checking in, and all staff was extremely friendly and helpful from the guy who answers the phone to our marine biologist Scott to the captain. We were very impressed with the clear respect and love for the natural world shown by the crew, as well as the depth of knowledge about all aspects of the marine environment. We loved learning more about not just the whales but also birds and kelp and water phenomenons and seals! Scott was extremely knowledgeable and skillfully fielded questions from old and young alike. We highly recommend spending some time exploring the ocean and touring with Prince of Whales. The complementary photo package was an unexpected and appreciated touch — very cool! Do make sure to bring layers and a jacket and prepare to enjoy the hot chocolate too!

I've had the pleasure of sailing with the crew of the Salish Sea Eclipse twice now. Our first trip, while it was an incredibly informative & enjoyable time on the water, was dubbed a "no whale tour" which meant we got to book another tour for no charge. We finally booked that your & were pleasantly surprised to two of the same guides from our first tour. Austen & Shannon were both fantastically knowledgeable & happily answered every question thrown at them. The entire tour was so well managed, it's very clear from the moment you arrive that they are professionals & they're very good at what they do. Safety of both the wildlife & the passengers remained the top priority throughout the entire trip.
Overall, the entire experience was amazing - I would highly recommend them to anyone considering a whale watching tour!

Prince Of Whales are my favourite company to go with on a whale trip, I wouldn’t choose anyone else. Their naturalists are always so knowledgeable. Today we had Seanie and not only does she know absolutely tons of interesting facts, you can feel her excitement and energy and how she enjoys her job. The Captain, First Mate and other naturalists were great too. We saw two different families of orca and they had HUGE dorsal fins, 3 humpbacks playing and one breaching. We saw Ollie the otter, California sea lions with pups and gorgeous views of sea and mountains. The whale sights are completely out of anyone’s control but I’d literally be happy to pay just for the beautiful views, the comfortable boat (with hot chocolate and coffee) and to hear the stories about whales and other wildlife even if we didn’t see whales. The best part is when they switch the engines off and you can hear the whales breathing, it’s magical. They have a guarantee so you can go back if you don’t see whales and they also sent through some amazing professional photos that I’ll be keeping forever

Matt, Richard, Scott, Nickolas, and Jamie all provided enthusiastic and courteous service as they educated us on whales, sea lions, algae, porpoises, migration, various bits of trivia, and much more. The tour comes with free of charge photos (there is a small whale emblem at the bottom of each digital photo, but not too intrusive) so you don't need to whip out your phone every 5 seconds to take pics of whale tales.
Pro tips: 1) Even if it's 30 Celsius outside, your ripped cut off jeans and tank top won't keep you warm. Wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, a fleece jacket, and toque/hat to keep the bitey 6C breeze out of your ears. 2) Everyone races to the top deck for the "best" view but it truly is all over the catamaran. You will be moving side to side and down for closer views, so don't stress. 3) Complimentary warm drink, but snacks have a small charge ($3 CAD) approx 4) Bring tip money for. That $173 your paying does not cover gratuity and these guys work hard for your entertainment and safety. They need to shout a lot so you can hear them, so at least give them some money for throat lozenges 5) You're on a boat that crosses the wake of much larger boats. When you cross the rollers, the boat goes up and down, Bring gravol if you know you are prone to hurl.
Is the overall trip worth $173 (with tax, no coupon/promo applied)? Divide it by 4 hours and you be the judge. For me, the last 90 minutes was a drive out and back to spot a couple porpoises. I'd rather cut the tour short by that time.

We just went on this Whale watching adventure this afternoon. We had such a nice time. The boat is gorgeous and the scenery and views are incredible - even before we saw the whales. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Shannon was willing to talk to us and answer our many, many questions with a smile!
There are options to sit inside, outside but covered or outside and not covered. It was +7 outside today in mid-October, so with our layers I was still a bit chilly when outside. We watched from inside most of the time and had spectacular views as the inside is surrounded by full floor to ceiling windows! We also got complimentary tea/coffee/hot chocolate which was nice to warm up as well.
We saw 5 different humpback whales as well as lots of seals. The humpback whales came super close at times which was really neat to see.
One of my favourite bonuses for this tour was they have their own photographer taking photos of the wildlife and they email them out within 24 hours at no cost. This was wonderful as I didn't feel the need to try to capture any photos, but could be in the moment and watch everything around me.
If you're heading out on this tour, I recommend bringing layers of clothing, snacks if you like (they are unable to provide food due to COVID-19), and make sure you bring some cash for a tip. They accept cash tips and you will definitely want to leave one before you head off the boat.

The trip was a 4 hour adventure! We saw orcas, seals and sea lions in their natural habitats. The photos taken by Coco were fantastic. She and her fellow guides, Katie and Rajan took the time to answer all of our questions and even brought up things the group didnt ask to ensure we were as informed as possible about all the species we were seeing. Richard and Gord were fantastic in ensuring our safety and getting close enough that we can see clearly but not too close to disturb the wildlife. All in all a perfect experience.

Wow, our expectations were blown away by the incredible professionalism, expertise and COVID safety of the crew on Prince of Whales half day trip.
The naturalists Austen, Brittney and Shannon could answer all our questions and really made sure our whole family was able to view both orcas, humpback whales and sea lions. They went above and beyond to share their knowledge on how the whales are identified and explained about the incredible whales. Both my husband and I would book again when relatives visits because it was so well done and a truly memorable experience. Brittney and Austen put in extra effort to make sure our young son was having a fantastic time with colouring books, hot chocolate and cool stories/facts. We so appreciate this.
The physical boat also makes a very enjoyable ride where you can warm up inside or catch the fresh sea air on the deck. The Captain Bill drove the boat with care and really showed respect for the whales by providing them their space. The Covid measures are the boat also create a sense of respect for health and safety, the crew members enforce them consistently in a friendly way.
We are locals and are so glad we decided to explore our big blue backyard with Prince of Whales.

We had a brilliant half day adventure. We were fortunate enough to have a beautiful sunny day with very little wind and plenty of humpbacks.
The crew were very informative about all things marine and the local area. They were super friendly and enthusiastic from dock to dock.
Lots of marine and bird life on show. Whales, porpoises, elephant seals and sea lions all making a show.. The star of course, was the Humpback whales. The catamaran was expertly placed for viewing the whales and we were lucky enough to have a few swim right alongside us.
A pair of binoculars and some good sea legs are recommended should you decide to go on this trip. The binoculars to help look out for the whales and the sea legs because even though it was a calm day some of the swells are quite big.
I would recommend Prince whales to anyone and hope one day to repeat the experience

We went on a 4 hour whale watching trip on the 22/5/23 and I cannot state how fantastic it was. We saw humpbacks, orcas and a minke whale so we were very happy! Our guides were Tom, Lindsey, Reid, Trayben and Rajan and they were not only incredibly knowledgeable but also very approachable. We were particularly impressed with how child friendly the crew were, taking time to answer my children’s questions (of which there were a lot!), handed out coloring books and also showed them the captains cabin! They really went above and beyond to make it a special trip. The boat was also very comfortable with hot drinks and snacks and bathrooms and a warm inside seated area and I particularly liked the fact that the guides will also take photos of the wildlife for you which means you can concentrate on enjoying the trip rather than taking photos which was also a huge bonus! This trip created lasting memories for all of us and we would definitely recommend to anyone!

We will be arriving by cruise ship. Do you pick up at the cruise terminal?

The Victoria cruise ship terminal is a litte way from the inner harbour at Victoria, so you would need transport to the inner harbour for the whale watching boats. Most cruise lines will have complementary transport from ship to Victoria inner harbour.

Is there a “guarantee “. If we don’t see whales or very many whales can I come back the next day for no cost? Or reduced cost?

If you don't see any whales, your guarantee will grant you a voucher for another trip. If you see 1 whale, that counts and you will not be given a voucher for another trip. We saw 2 whales on our trip and we saw them multiple times while they dove and surfaced. The boats stay in the area and follow where the whales have been and where they are headed, so if you see 1 or 2 you will follow them for a while.
