About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Ozi-gal0 contributionsVery interesting tour.Very informative tour. We especially liked the earpieces which meant everyone could hear the guide talk very easily, but it made it a bit hard to interact with the guide, so it was more of a "listen to the information" tour rather than interactive. Personally, I like tours with a bit more on local culture/ fun facts/ interesting characters in history to bring things to life a bit more. Would still recommend.Written August 29, 2024
- amydP4744JH0 contributionsSpoooookyWe had a great walking tour, unfortunately can’t remember the name of our guide but she was animated and delightful. 1 hour long and very slight uphill walk. Two teenage boys with us also really enjoyed it. We would come back and tour with this company again. Thank you!Written August 23, 2024
- W332DNkathya0 contributionsThis is a great valueWe just took friends on this tour. I had been on this very tour before and really enjoyed it. Our friends liked it too. So informative. Gracious tour guide and assistant. I will continue to recommend it to alal of our guests.Written July 29, 2024
- Howa260 contributionsVery good value for moneyExcellent history tour of China town and the temple. Use of headset ensured all the talk could be heard and the tour went over time. A honey bun to eat was an added extra. Very good value for money.Written July 28, 2024
- GregT8950 contributionsSheldon FTWOutstanding. I don’t think I have ever met a more enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide than Sheldon. Also, they use a audio headset system that worked extremely well.Written July 24, 2024
- M4158PSmarkb0 contributionsA comfortable stroll through Victoria's pastAn informative and engaging walking tour covering a variety of elements of Victoria and its past. The guide was attentive to his group careful that the ten of us stayed together and safe, very important on the busy summer sidewalks. The talk was sensitive to the various peoples in Victoria's history and handled this diversity very well. The pace and duration of the walk is just right (90 to 100 minutes) and while I would prefer that the walk returns us to our start point, it is an easy 10 minute walk from the end of the tour back to the starting point.Written July 4, 2024
- arielbZ896MR0 contributionsAbsolutely worth your time!We are big history walk fans and this was one of the best we've been on. Chris was a very engaging guide; a good historian and a good story teller. I appreciated how he wove in both the stories of individuals and groups who shaped Victoria while also pulling in the larger historical events that were influencing its growth and trajectory. If you're considering this tour, just go for it! You'll be glad you did.Written June 29, 2024

- 2013wanderer20130 contributionsGreat introduction to VictoriaInformative, entertaining guide. Loved the fact he had earpiece for each us so we could easily hear him over the noise of the city and as we spread out a bit. Good walking pace - easy for old and young to keep together. So glad we did this on our first afternoon in Victoria.Written May 29, 2024
- SookeySal0 contributionsGreat time on the Historical Walking TourWe found Chris, our tour guide, to be very enthusiastic about sharing the history of Victoria. He is a historian and brought history to life. It was fun to learn about all the old buildings and the history behind them. He provided us with a headphone set which we could then clearly hear what he was telling us. Very helpful! Thanks Chris and his daughter Camas for a fun tour.Written May 5, 2024

We did the late night ghost tour. What made it a fantastic experience was our guide and story teller Brynne. She did a wonderful job of engaging all of with some great haunted stories in areas of downtown Victoria. Highly recommend this tour when you are in town.

We loved our ghost tour around the city. It was a beautiful crisp evening to set the mood right before Halloween. Our guide Chris was great at telling his ghostly stories and we were able to learn more about the city's history. My kids loved it too. We will be back to hear more.

We did the James Bay & Bent Mast Ghostly Walks walking tour - and it was great! We were told about John Adams and his walking tours by another tour guide, and it didn't disappoint. John is a fabulous storyteller and so knowledge of the history of Victoria. These tours are fun, full of history and great stories, and they changed the way I saw the city and its locations. Such a great way to learn more about Victoria and the people who influenced it (and still do wooooooo!). We booked two tours during our stay in Victoria: the one and a daytime Chinatown tour. Both are highly recommended! Go on one (or more) of these tours and you'll come away with a new-found respect and knowledge of the city, as well as great stories. We look forward to taking more of John's walking tours the next time we're in Victoria.

I've done tours with this company two or three times over the years and this particular route at least once. But still, every time is a little different or a different tour guide brings their own particular touch to the stories. Zach was brilliant and we had a blast :)

We enjoyed this weekends ghost walk for an hour through different parts of the city. This is our third walk and each time a different guide and different stories but always very scary and interesting. It was a bit windy so dress warmly, but a great safe Covid activity for the family. My two daughters 15 and 19 years loved it and everyone wore masks and was spaced apart. Two years ago we brought visitors from Germany and they also enjoyed. It would be nice to have it extended to 1.5 hours. Our guide, Ian (I hope i have the right name) was very good! Thank you for some safe fun during this very strange time!

I have attended Ghostly walks as both a visitor and resident of Victoria. The tours are fun, informative and a great way to see part of the city and learn some history, as well as spooky stories from the past. The guides are entertaining and well versed in hundreds of stories. I would recommend the tour to anyone looking for fun and a bit of fright.

Several years ago my family had done the Ghostly Walk Route #1 and enjoyed it, so this time in Victoria we wanted to try Route #2. It was lead by John Adams and we walked around the front of the Empress over to the Legislature, up to St. Ann's Academy and finished at Beacon Hill Park. The tour states it is 1 hour long, but plan for longer than that.
John is a fantastic story teller and so full of knowledge. He even dresses all up in black and uses a walking stick with a skull on the top to help us get into the mood of a ghost tour. You can tell he enjoys doing it and really brings that across in his story telling. He even let us tell some stories of our experiences with ghosts and spirits.
Well worth the time and money to take one of these tours.

Repeat ghost walkers, that's what we like to hear! It's wonderful that you enjoyed the Empress to Beacon Hill Park tour so much. John is a great storyteller and agreed, the black outfit and walking stick sure does add to the ambience. We're always interested in hearing stories of people's experiences with ghosts and spirits, thanks for sharing yours.

We had an absolutely fabulous experience on our Christmas ghost walking tour of Victoria. Despite the very cold weather (for the area), Chris kept us all engaged with the stories of hauntings from around downtown and also kept us moving at a good, comfortable pace. The stories were interesting and detailed, and were told with a great mix of historical detail and supernatural flair. Absolutely a 5 star experience, would definitely recommend

Second time. Was good, but some things were dispointing, however, they were out of your control. The buskers that forced us into alley ways or off the main path was very confusing for my kids who didn't enjoy it at all this time. It would have been better to be in front of said buildings because not seeing the buildings when speaking about them made it not worth it. Emily was great and did the best she could with what she had.

Glad to know that you felt that Emily did the best possible with so much going on downtown when you took the Ghostly Walk. We're sorry that conditions weren't better

In a world where it's very exceptional to get great customer service, Discover the Past went above and beyond to accommodate our group of 9. We were late due to a delay getting out of the cruise port to make our 9 PM tour. The owner of Discover the Past, John Adams met us and gave us an amazing 1 hour tour that did not disappoint. He is a fantastic storyteller and has a long history in this gorgeous city. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Victoria!

How far is this tours starting point from where the Holland America cruise ship docks in port?. Is it within walking distance? We will only be in Victoria for 4 hours in the evening and trying to find something to do. Thank you!
Written July 15, 2022
It's about a 20-25 minute walk, but there will be a shuttle to take you a few blocks from the meeting place. It was $15 round trip at the time we took the shuttle (July 2022) and it comes every 15 minutes.

Well, our experience was that it was all about the tour guide. Some are better than others. We liked the one near the harbor as it was walkable from where we were staying and we didn't bring a car. I'd rate our tour guide as pretty good - she was more into the humor of the stories than the ghostly aspects and our boys kind of wanted more scary ghost stuff!
