About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- t0bik240 contributionsAwesome trip!We had a great time. We saw so many humpback whales, apparently unusual to see them in groups. They were slapping the water with their tales and doing cartwheels. The guides were very knowledgeable and helpful explaining what was happening and even identifying some of the whales we saw.Written September 24, 2024
- Ann N0 contributionsAmazing Friday afternoonAn amazing afternoon spent with expert guides. We learned so much and were mesmerised by the humpbacks we saw, and orca hunting in the kelp (as well as a sea lion heading towards the boat). Our guides were so well informed. One of the best trips of our holiday. Well done to the crew that took us out / your enthusiasm was infectious and just added to the day.Written September 23, 2024
- MAPerth210 contributionsGo with another boat companyThe booking process was great. Genevieve was just lovely. The boat trip itself was disappointing. The crew including the captain, were more interested in taking their own photos, often in front of paying clients. There was a yellow line next to the captain's area which so happened to be the best photographers area.. if you crossed it, you were told off like a child. I am a qualified skipper and have been recently on a number of other whale watching trips. This captain wanted the space to take his own photos. It wasbt a safety issue as the boat was not moving. The priority of the crew was disappointing. Also other boats didn't hang around were we were and they all saw orcas. .. they didn't even try. So don't believe the photos. We hung around most of the time by dormant humpbacks who weren't doing anything. The other boats moved on.Written September 22, 2024
- RebeccaT19670 contributionsA true conservation aware companyCatherine was an expert tour guide, she provided us with in depth information on whales and was able to identify them by their tails. She explained the threats such as lack of a particular type of salmon that local whales rely on and how this is threatening their populations. The commentary was very informative and showed an obvious interest and concern regarding the welfare of whales. I am soo impressed with the integrity of this tour company. I highly recommend for whale watching and for environmental and conservation reasons !!!Sensational!!Written September 20, 2024

- lagrasl070 contributionsLET DOWNLET DOWN: Arrived to our tour meeting only to be informed that they had known for 12 days that their boat was broken and dry docked, and the tour was cancelled, but had not tried to contact us to inform. They failed to put us on another boat or tour as well. Unprofessional and negligent - go with another company!Written August 28, 2024
- I6692XLdavids0 contributionsA wonderful experience both on land and seaJose gave us a fantastic land tour of the botanic gardens, the caldera, the volcanic eruption site, the partially buried lighthouse, and the rebuilt whaling house, focusing on our interests in island ecology and whaling history. Then, aware of the presence of a large sperm whale pod nearby, he arranged an impromptu whale watching cruise for us in the evening, where we hung out by sperm whales for about 30 or 40 minutes. To top it off, he gave us a boat ride back to our island, after the whale cruise interfered with our ferry ride back. Most highly recommended.Written August 24, 2024
- DelythH110 contributionsWhale watchingWe were all looking forward to this excursion. But was very disappointed when our morning trip was cancelled to the afternoon due to the boat being in for repair. When we seen the small boat we were going on we were so disappointed to say the least. This trip was a lot of money for what we saw. We only seen the whales at a distance and didn’t get far enough in to see better the guide was good and informative. But the trip was certainly not worth the money. We are all very disappointed.Written August 17, 2024
- r0khsarm0 contributionsConsistently Canceled and Disappointing Service - Avoid 5 Star Whale WatchingMy experience with 5 Star Whale Watching was incredibly frustrating. We booked a tour, but it was canceled multiple times. The first time, they claimed the boat was broken, and they didn’t even inform us in advance. To avoid this happening again, we requested a tour for the following week, and they assured us they would use their smaller boat to ensure it wouldn't be canceled. However, I was shocked when they called again, claiming the boat was broken once more! This level of unreliability and lack of professionalism is unacceptable. Instead of offering any compensation, they suggested we cancel and book with another company. I strongly advise against booking with 5 Star Whale Watching. There are other companies out there that value their customers and can provide a more reliable and professional service.Written August 9, 2024
- FarAway8017930 contributionsCreating Family memoriesWe had our entire family get together for several activities in the Victoria area and while it was a bit hectic to get 14 of us including 6 grandkids going in the same direction, it was a great experience. One of the highlights was our Whale watching trip on the morning of August 7. The "Shadow" accommodated 12 of us nicely and with the cabin we were able to keep kids warm in the cool environment on the ocean. The key to our trip was the staff of Five Star with Captain Gordon doing his utmost to find whales and maneuvering around Race Rocks in the currents so we could see seals and sea lions and Naturalist Mika telling us about the wildlife and keeping the younger kids entertained with books and stories we had a great 3 hours on the water. Unfortunately we did not see more than a fleeting glance of a whale and we really appreciated the offer of a repeat trip based on their guarantee. Being local, we plan on another great opportunity to get the family together that i know will be made even more special by our new friends at 5-star.Written August 9, 2024

It was okay, I was very gutted as we had been so looking forward to this trip and some of the other reviewers seems to have a different experience with being able to see other marine life going by pictures and reviews. our trip was very much an hour and a bit straight out to sea on the boat to see one humpback whale surface for 15/20 minutes and then felt like the crew were clock watching we left it for an hour trip straight back to harbour. It's a shame, I know nature is unpredictable but hearing other reviewers talk about seeing sea lions, eagles, orcas, dolphins etc felt like we weren't even taken to spots where there is a chance of seeing anything else even if they weren't about on the day.
Not the best value for money on our trip and I was really gutted, both left feeling pretty underwhelmed. The boat was comfortable enough but maybe not the fastest compared to other tour companies, possibly why we weren't able to go to other spots to potentially see other marine wildlife.

Pretty great. I chose this boat (Salish Shadow) bc it was small enough for a more intimate experience but large enough to have a bathroom on board for my older parents. It was also small enough to avoid the giant group of school children boarding a larger boat next to us. Our experience was quiet and pleasant and we were able to see a whale. We did the 3 hour option and it was plenty of time on the water IMO and we had time to see Butchart gardens afterwards.

I work as a tour guide and have been using Five Star for all my whale watching excursions in Victoria for more than 5 years. I have sent over 300 guests on trips with the experienced crew onboard the various vessels and they always come back raving about their experience and the knowledge of the entire crew. Whenever possible I try to get out on the water as well! Highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable morning or afternoon on the water!

I admit I had low expectations for this trip because, nature, but we saw a family of humpback whales! It was truly amazing! We kept a respectful distance and still saw SO much! Captain Jasper was informative, engaging and kind to my son (who wasn’t enjoying to ride so much). It was a pretty bumpy journey—if you get seasick I would recommend a bigger boat. But this was once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Our trip was cancelled about 30 minutes before we were due to leave without any advanced notice . We had driven an hour to get there and they hadn’t checked if any other providers had space. Fortunately we were able to find another provider but it was more expensive at short notice. Whilst I understand people are ill, I’d recommend both communicating early and having a back up plan.

We were sorry that we had to cancel your tour due to our Captain being ill. We gave as much notice to people as possible as this was a last minute decision as the Captain had expected to be able to do the trip. Unfortunately by the time the Captain realized he was not well enough to do the trip it was too late to arrange for a back up, though he did try.
It is better that we canceled the tour than bring in a sick Captain and sacrifice safety, something we will not do.
We are glad you managed to head out with another operator that day.

We had a wonderful morning out on the Salish sea. Our captain was great, the weather was great, and we were very impressed with the Covid protocols aboard. Because a fog bank set in we did not end up seeing any wheels, however, we did see some ecological sites, marine wildlife such as sea lions, seals, and a cormorant colony. It was a very enjoyable trip. We like that they have a whale sighting guarantee so that we can come back anytime and do another trip of free of charge to see a whale.

Thank you for your kind words and review of your tour. It is a shame the fog rolled in that day and thank you for understanding that the rare & unexpected weather was the reason for not seeing Whales. We look forward to you joining a tour again in the future! It was a pleasure having you onboard and we are glad you enjoyed the tour despite no whales. We are sure you will have better luck next time.

The captain did not “welcome” the group - just gave blunt instructions. Would have been nice to have some communication during the trip (eg. Where we were headed, how long to get there, check in to see if anyone was cold and wanted to go inside cabin). We did have to go just over an hour out and did see a pod which was great. But again, no communication about it being time to head back … just “sit down and hang on”. Captain was not friendly at all … first time on any tour we did not leave a tip.

Thank you for your review and feedback.
We will pass on your comments to the Captain but have to say this is out of character. In fact just look at the reviews on here, they all mention how wonderful the same Captain was during their tour.
It is also worth noting that not only did you have the Captain on the tour that day but also a Marine Naturalist (who is also qualified to drive the vessel you were on) who gave the safety talk and provided information throughout the tour. This allowed the Captain to concentrate on finding the Whales as they were quite the distance from Victoria but he put in the extra effort to ensure everyone saw the Whales.
With regards to providing information on where the tour is headed, the reality about a Wildlife/Whale tour is that things can change in a split second. Our crew give general information about where the vessel will be heading and explain to guests what to look for as we search for Whales and wildlife. On that tour in particular the Whales were moving rapidly away from Victoria so the Captain did not know how long or where exactly the Whales would be encountered, that is the reality with Whales that can move up to a 100 miles in a day.
Sam is excellent at explaining how to look for the blows and parts of the animal moving through the water.
All guests are also provided a thorough safety briefing at the start of the tour as per Transport Canada regulations.
Sam was constantly checking with the guests to make sure they were good and to see if anyone wanted to come inside, which some did.
After watching the Orcas, Sam again warned everyone it was time to leave, to take a seat and again check if anyone wanted to come inside. The Captain checked on the people on the front seats and then prepared for the journey home.
What may have seen to you unfriendly, was in fact a Captain concentrating on the job in hand to 1. make sure everyone was safe. 2. Get to the whales.
Many of the other guests on that same tour really appreciated the effort made to get to the whales that day and noted our vessel was the only one on scene from Victoria.
Thank you again for your review.

Went out with Five Star on their Ultimate Marine Adventure recently and had an amazing time! This company is professional, responsible and with very friendly, helpful staff. I've been on their Catamaran Tours before (excellent) but decided to try their Ultimate Adventure this time and was not disappointed. The staff took great care of me & the other passengers right from check-in until the end of the tour. The boat was comfortable (it does have indoor seating if you feel cold), safe and a whole lot of fun :) They have thick floater jackets for you to wear for an extra layer of warmth and safety. Our Captain and crew took great care of us throughout the trip and gave us tons of wonderful information. We got to see a number of Humpback Whales, including a Mom & Calf, which was amazing. We also got to see a pod of Orcas, which was a bonus. I highly recommend this company, they truly are 5 Star!

Absolutely brilliant. We saw 4 humpback whales, seals and sea lions. Gordon (the boat driver) was so knowledgeable about the marine environment and just a really personable guide. Would definitely recommend this company if you are thinking about doing a whale tour in Victoria.

We took the whale watching experience tour on July 9, 2023. First off, we were not aware of the 40 minute walk from the cruise ship to the office upon our arrival in Victoria. Better communication or perhaps a shuttle would have been much appreciated. Because our group was so large that day, our family of four was placed into a second boat along with 6 other people. Although we had an enjoyable tour whale watching, there was absolutely no communication from our captain as to when we would arrive and when we would leave. There also was no communication ever as to the habitat of the whales, or explaining anything about them. He was simply the driver of the boat and offered no explanation at all. It would have been nice for him to communicate to us sometime during our trip. We enjoyed the whale activity, but probably would book with a different company in the future

Whilst we are glad you enjoyed your tour overall we are sorry to hear that you will not book with us again, especially as the complaints you have are due to you booking through a 3rd party.
When we received your reservation there was nothing that indicated you were on a cruise ship visiting Victoria. We do send all guests a comprehensive list explaining how to get to our office, what to wear, what to bring and various other important details. We are also not allowed to send a shuttle to the cruise ship terminal, plus we do not own one. However, there are several options to get from the cruise ship terminal to our office, including a free shuttle service (hence why we are not allowed a shuttle) or taxi, which is what we would have recommended had you contacted our office. A quick Google search shows exactly where our office is and how long it takes from the terminal. A simple call to our office would have confirmed this.
We did not place you into a second boat, that was the boat you had booked when you made the reservation through the 3rd party.
With regards to the Captain, sorry to hear he was not as communicative as he usually is. However, he was dealing with rougher conditions than expected that morning, so his focus was ensuring the vessel got to the whales and everyone was safe. We did pass on these comments to him though.
Thank you again for the review. Communication is key, so maybe next time you book an excursion through a 3rd party, make sure you contact the vendor directly or read the information they provide more thoroughly, it can save a lot of trouble.

I think we booked our trip a week in advance. We went in the afternoon (morning was sold out). The captain and helper said there wasn’t much difference in the time of day—the whales are always out there, just depends on what they feel like doing at that time.
