Tall Ship Silva Sailing Cruise

By Tall Ship Silva
About
Though you can always hop on a boat cruise to see Halifax Harbour, for a traditional sailing experience, few tours compare to sightseeing aboard an actual tall ship. With this scenic sail, hop aboard your boat and help raise the sails as you set out on the harbor. Enjoy views of the waterfront, grab a drink at the cash bar, and enjoy curious stories about the region's maritime history.

      Ghost Ship Sail
This sail was wonderful. My wife and daughter and I enjoyed the cruise last night. We have to say that it was The Pirates of Halifax that ‘made’ the evening for us. They were wonderful at engaging the audience, and truly ‘set the mood and tone’ of the evening. I am not a fan of live music, and found myself clapping my hands and tapping my foot along to their performance! The one drawback was one very intoxicated woman, who’s actions and loud talk made it impossible for us to hear the story teller for the first half hour of the cruise. The woman, was very intoxicated when she boarded, had trouble walking, her speech was slurred and quite frankly, her behaviour obnoxious. I feel that she should have been denied boarding, or the very least denied her more alcohol service. The staff made no effort to quiet her, although it was plain that she was annoying everyone. We feel that it was only one of the Pirates of Halifax that finally engaged her and her group in an effort to mitigate her behaviour on others. Despite this, we’re looking forward to sailing again, and will be highly recommending the Tall Ship Silva to everyone!

      An experience to try
It's certainly a fun ride, not a long distance during their sail. Perhaps because it was cold 45 F and windy, we were glad to get back to port. I'd recommend it on a nice summer day. They do serve free coffee, and have a pay bar.

      Had a blast
My family thoroughly enjoyed the tour!! The kids got to help raise the sails!!! I got to have Nova Scotia craft beer on a tall ship!! Was a great day, would recommend to anyone. The tour guide was informative but not long winded. Great tour

      A great cruise
A great cruise for anyone - families, couples, friends. The narration is wonderful, and you’re free to walk around the ship to get pictures. It’s very relaxed and casual, and the scenery is fantastic.

      Great fun, affordable and informative
We saw the ship sailing in the harbour the previous day and just had to do it too. We purchased tickets online and the next day we were among the excited passengers who enjoyed this unique experience. Our tour guide was very informative and entertaining (lots of good stories)--we also enjoyed his full seafarer beard! The voyage around the harbour with all of the sails unfurled was great--and the views of the city and the islands gave a new perspective. We also enjoyed meeting some fellow passengers. Highly recommended.

Great 90 minute tour of the harbour
Board the Silva, and 80 year old steel Belgian coal freighter, converted to a tour vessel on 2003. The have a bar on board as well as a very informative narrator. Very educational

Great Tall Ship Experience...This Day ALL The Sails Were Up...Fantastic Views!!
We lucked out with the weather while we were in Canada for 12 days. This day was like the rest...Picture Perfect with Enough Wind for Sailing. There was a large group onboard, but since we boarded early, we sat on the port side along the railing. The deck hands invited anyone who wanted to help haul up the sails by hand. There were some volunteers, but we watched. There was five sails to hoist. The trip was about 1 1/2 hours. During that time there was a bar onboard to buy soft drinks, beer or wine. Very interesting cruise up and down along the Halifax Harbor. There was some commentary by one of the staff, but there could have been more to make the trip more enjoyable and informative. Many great photo opportunities. It was a very pleasant experience being on the 130 foot schooner built in the 1930's.

Make the Most of It... its a TALL SHIP
Our experience was unlike others, we dressed the part, its a Tall Ship, after all. Dressed in our best Pirate costume, we walked the harbour, posed for photos with strangers and talked like Pirates, looking for a ship. We set sail on the ship for a 2-hour tour of the Halifax Harbour, the staff were welcoming to our antics and EVERYONE onboard join in for the fun. For us, it was all about being around good friends, enjoying the sailing and taking in the harbour from a different vantage point. And if you were thirsty, there was a bar, and if you were hungry there were snacks. And if you wanted a photo with a Pirate, than you best speak up.

Ghost Ship Sail - extremely cold and there weren't enough speakers
Some friends and I went on the ghost ship sail and while we were happy with the service we got from the staff and crew, there were some other things we thought could be added to improve the experience. One: The point of the ghost ship was hearing stories about haunted Halifax, but unless you were in the very tiny Murphy's Bar it was almost impossible to hear the tour guide. I believe that adding some speakers to the belowdeck seating area would be a real improvement, since there were a lot of us sitting down there to get away from the cold deck and we couldn't hear the tour guide at all. Two: Having blankets or more heating in the belowdecks, it was extremely cold even down there so a couple space heaters would have been lovely. If anyone else is thinking of doing the ghost ship sail next year make sure you're dressed for extremely cold weather! bring mittens!

      Tall ship experience
Enjoyed the tall ship experience. Just a very slow short sail along the waterfront harbor and the sails are down for half the time. There is a bar on board.

Pirates Adventure on Tall Ship Silva
Grandson had a wonderful time onboard, especially when they fired the small cannon. That being said, if not for Halifax Tourism stop at the border I would not have known that they do not do the Pirate excursion on a daily basis. A volunteer memeber was kind enough to call ahead for us and let us know that there was a Pirate event the next day Aug 9th and then not again until the 17th. Apparently, its not as profitable as the "Rum Cruises" A shame really because the children loved it, and the boat was full. So do check before assuming as we did that it is always available. The experience could be better, but the crew tried very hard to give the young people an experience, such as setting the sails, (by pulling the ropes) and instruction on knot tying, as well as a treasure hunt. All in all very good bang for the buck if you are in the area when they do it. Thank you Silva crew.

A definite "To-Do" activity in Halifax!
We decided at the last minute to try this tour and were so glad we did. Great crew, very friendly and worked hard to look after all the guests. Hostess was extremely personable and took time to meet, greet and chat with every single guest on the cruise. Had no idea Nova Scotia produced some very high quality wines which we sampled and paired with excellent quality seafood hors d'oeuvres prepared by a talented local chef and his staff. Ended up being a very relaxing and pleasant way to spend an evening in Halifax!

      Great cruise round the harbour
This 1 and a half hour cruise round the harbour gave us a great view of Halifax from the water as well as a very good commentary from Matthew giving us some of the local history and points of interest. The sails were raised as it is a 3 masted schooner and you can help put them up. Very worth while trip

We had booked this for our first team event in almost 3 years (8 people) several weeks before hand and arrived at the dock at the designated time. All seats were taken, they basically oversold the space. They said "you can sit below deck" really? We had booked a harbour cruise to see the harbour, or their other offer "refund" My manger had flown down from Montreal for the team event and this is what we had booked, so cancelling last minute was not an option. We had to stand up. It was terrible. The depressing tour guide delivered an awful commentary - all about the war and very negative things about Halifax. It was interrupted by a Great Big Sea tune blared every once in awhile but it was super depressing. My Manager asked me if anything good ever happened in Halifax. I assure her it did. Thanks Silva for a huge overbooked buzzkill. Pretty sure my Manager will never come back to Halifax and two of us got covid thanks to the overcrowding.

Hi there, Please accept our sincere apologies for not having provided you and your group with a much more pleasant experience. This is not how we expect guests to feel after joining us on any tour. We can assure you that the tour was not overbooked - we have a limited number of tickets based on vessel capacity and only sell up to that amount. The Tall Ship Silva Cruise, as described on our website, is a way to get out of the water, enjoy the scenery, enjoy a beverage, and sit back and relax. We do have other experiences on the Silva that may have been better geared to your group - Party Cruises, cruises with Live Music, and Wines on the Water to name a few. Either way, we regret that we did not live up to your expectations and apologize for that.

I purchased a ticket for the Silva tall ship harbour cruise ( 1 1/2 hours) first week in August . I was very disappointed, absolutely falsely advertised as what to expect. When purchasing the ticket, under " what to expect" says Help the crew hoist the sails try your hand at knots or take a hand at the helm or just sit and enjoy, be entertained with a commentary about Halifax and sights "
What a joke ! No sails, no commentary, just music playing
( Which was nice), a waste of $75 . I was in Halifax a week and never once saw the ship out with sails up as the picture shows . Wouldn't definately not recommend it .

Hi there, Thanks for sharing this review with us - we're disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy the cruise. To be clear, an adult ticket for the Tall Ship Silva Cruise is $39.41. You're right- we do typically raise the sails and do indeed invite guests to help out. We would have expected our team to inform guests why sails would not have gone up (there are reasons for this) and we regret that it wasn't communicated. As far as the commentary goes - we recently updated our tour (and website description) and did away with the commentary - this was a result of more and more that guests letting us know that they did not want to hear it. We will most certainly revisit this component of our tour. Thanks again for the feedback. It will be taken seriously and shared with the team.

Terrible experience. We were told too much wind to put the sails up but it was a still day. Hardly even a breeze mist of the trip and all the other sail boats around us had their sails out. Looking at the sails tho from the rips and wear and tear I don't think they've been up in awhile. While I understand weather permitting maybe a tour around the island would have been prettier than a trip down the industrial bank. And maybe if the sails can't go up have some other surprises planned? A pirate? Some live music? Very boring ride. Will not recommend or be back. So disappointing in something I was so excited about

Hi there, Thanks very much for sharing this review with us - we do take feedback to heart so these comments will be shared with our team. We're truly disappointed that you did not enjoy the experience but we can ensure you that the sails are indeed raised and they would have been if conditions were favourable - this is determined by our captain. What might seem like calm winds from the deck of the vessel could very easily not be the same above. Our team puts safety above all else so several factors have to be considered when making such decisions. Either way, we could have and should have done better and we regret that we didn't.

Great guide, team involved passengers to help with sails, etc. Beverages were available to those that chose. TIP - it was much cooler than we anticipated, best to have a sweater and not use it than to need it and not have one (which was our unfortunate situation).

It would be good if you told the participants that it is too windy to put up the sail and give them an option of changing to a different day. Not putting up the sails on a Tall Ship takes all the fun away. Also smelling the fumes from the engine was not good. I expected so much more.

Hi there, Thanks for sharing this - we wish that your experience would have been much more pleasant. With regards to raising the sails - please understand that while not putting up the sails may seem to take the fun away, our captain will always make the call based on the safety of our guests. We would very much prefer to put them up during every tour but Mother Nature doesn't always agree.

Solid trip. Can buy drinks. If your looking for an in depth history tour this isn’t it. The guide was good but it’s more beginner knowledge about Halifax harbour and area. The historian tour is on on a small boat so this one was a cooler ship but anyone looking for more in depth history take the other.

The boarding was a bit late as well as leaving the dock. Sights along the way were explained by the host, who I must say, was very unappropiatley dressed. IMO the crew should have had on professional attire. The host had on a professional looking top, but her dirty white tennis skirt was so short that her underwear could be seen when she was hauling up the sail. The music was nice and fit the sail. I was disappointed that the cruise didn't include the Northwest arm or a free bottle of water.

This is a great way to see Halifax harbour and surrounds. The boat glides through the water even in windy conditions so no worry about feeling sea sick. There is a drink service and they play amazing music perfect for the sail. Ask the captain if they can raise the sails. I understand that sometimes they will. Enjoy this great and unique way to explore Halifax.

Good for someone who hasn't been to Halifax. Bar and entertainment on board were good. Sails go up, but it's not sailing, just motor driven. Kids can help raise the sails, which can be fun for some. Get there a bit earlier to get seats (like 30mins).

The recorded music was obnoxiously loud the entire duration of the cruise. They “raised” the sails for a few minutes but never used them, despite a steady 10 knot breeze. Such a shame, it could have been really nice to get that ship moving!
