          Good times with good folk!
We went for a round trip drive on Alternative Routes back in May. Sam was attentive and easy to deal with when we booked our journey, and friendly and knowledgeable when we met up to drive around southern Nova Scotia. She knows lots of people in each of the towns we stopped at, and you can tell that she really cares about the communities and introducing her customers to what they have to offer. We had a great time and great conversation on the way back. We were very pleased to have booked with her, and would recommend Alternative Routes to anyone visiting Halifax.

          August trip
We saw so many tourist locations and got to see a lot of the province. The best part is that we got to do it all in one day and didn't have to worry about driving, getting lost or getting directions, finding parking, etc. This is well worth the money.

Hop on hop off trip with Quincy
Booked our hop on hop off return trip with Sam at Alternatives Routes by recommendation from a friend in England UK. Started our journey in Halifax and our driver was a fantastic chilled and played back guy called Quincy who made out trip very welcoming and enjoyable. Stopped off at Peggy's Cove and got some great pictures of the historic lighthouse and beautiful rock formations surrounding the lighthouse. Also stopped off at less well known Polly's cove again beautiful scenery. Requested a drop off at Lunenburg and stopped over for two nights. Stayed at the Atlantic Sojourn B&B for the first night (Lovely, friendly and clean and tasty breakfast). The second night stayed at the Boscawin Inn, which was also lovely close to some great places to eat. Rented some bikes from the Rhumb Line Bycicle shop and went on a 45KM ride of Lunenburg enjoying the beautiful scenery of the coastlines and small villages. After our stay we were picked up and went on to Wolfville and Luckett Vinyard where we had some wine tasting and bought some good local wines of Nova Scotia and we were dropped back to Halifax. Will definately be recommending this one......!!!

The Best Way to see Nova Scotia!!
My daughter and I had the BEST time traveling through the wonderful areas of Nova Scotia with Sam, Quincey and even Lola. We bought the 4-Day pass and were able to spend overnights in Lunenburg and Wolfville without a car thanks to this unique and special service that Sam provides. We stayed one night in Lunenburg and the next day Sam was prompt and got us excited about our next stop. We spent two nights in Wolfville and enjoyed the wineries there (even Sam will stop for a wine tasting if you are interested). Once again Sam picked us up promptly. Meeting new people each time we got in the van was so much fun. The friendship that was gained from spending time with Sam was invaluable. She educated us on the beauty, charm and history of Nova Scotia. Thank you so much Sam! Hope to travel there again.

Best Hop-on Hop-off shuttle service travel around Nova Scotia
This is quite an over-due review but let me post. I traveled last year early Jul with Alternative Routes for the first time. It was the best trip I’ve ever done! Highly recommend to those who don’t want to drive a car by yourself, solo traveler or anyone who want budget travel! Stress free of driving, enjoy the sceneries and friendly conversations in a comfortable car with fellow passengers. You would feel like traveling along with friends in most relaxed way. I used 4-day pass to stay at Mahone Bay and Lunenburg on the route. Thanks to Alternative Routes, I could plan such itinerary. Alternative Routes is the only choice allowing overnight stay on the route. I spent several nights in lovely B&Bs. Enjoyed the fresh local meals, small town hospitality and picturesque sceneries. You wouldn’t regret getting off the car on the route. You can simply do a return trip in a day but I recommend the x-day pass if time allows. It’s worth spending days in beautiful towns at your own pace. I can’t thank enough to Sam and feel grateful to have an opportunity to look around Nova Scotia. Without you, I wouldn’t be able to visit such a lots of places and meet wonderful people. It must be tough to run this service by yourself but she’s been managing so gracefully with her positive & energetic spirits. Door-to-Door pick-up and punctuality are so appreciated as well. I’ve already booked another trip again with 7-day pass. If you drop down the “Hopping-off” in the online Booking form, you can see a lots to get off, not just famous Peggy’s Cove or Lunenburg. I ended up to purchase 7-day pass this time. Can’t wait to meet her and stay in other cute towns on the route this year. See you soon!!!

Highly Recommend Alternate Routes & Sam
Enjoyed every minute of the June 5th tour. Stopped at many locations along Nova Scotia’s South shore and around the Annapolis Valley. I’m taking home many photos of beautiful N.S. and memories of delicious locally prepared food (seafood chowder at the Kiwi Cafe, apple fritters with lemon cream at Peasants Pantry, wine tasting at Lightfoot & Wolfville Winery). Saw so much but never felt rushed. Definitely the highlight of my first trip to Canada’s East Coast. Thank you, Sam.

Easy -no fuss traveling in Nova Scotia
My 19 year old son and I went to Nova Scotia last week end for a quick get-way from Toronto. Traveling with Sam from Alternative Routes was the best decision for us! She took us on and off the beaten path, provided great suggestions( Oh my- eat the apple fritters!!!!), and she was fun and informative. Sam's easy going style is perfect for the role she assumes- like a friend, a mother( to stay safely away from the tide at certain spots), a sister and a history/geography information provider all in one! I would definitely recommend going with Sam ( and her adorable dog Lola) and her van around the Nova Scotia!!

Sam is a wonder! An entrepreneur with an adventurous soul makes for an amazing tour guide. She had facts and info at the ready and told stories along the way. It was a fabulous day out and about in Nova Scotia.

          Fabulous Tour
This tour was just what I was looking for—a flexible, relaxed atmosphere, plenty of time to see what I wanted to, and an intelligent, funny, and gracious host. She couldn’t have been more accommodating. I highly recommend Sam (and her dog Lulu) for your next trip.

Sam was wonderful...flexible, intelligent, humorous. I learned so much on this tour. She really adapts to her clients' needs. She offers a unique way of both touring the countryside and getting to your next destination.

          Excellent Tour
I don't drive but I also don't like being on a tour bus. Sam provided the perfect solution-a way to get to all the spots I wanted in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. I happened to be the only passenger, which was a real bonus for me. Sam provided interesting commentary on the local area, history and culture and we spoke of many other things as well. There was plenty of time for me to wander by myself in Peggy's Cove and Lunenberg, and Sam made good suggestions about where I could eat lunch. I got dropped off at my AirBnB in Wolfville, something I wasn't expecting for some reason but it is an appreciated part of her service. I highly recommend this tour option.

Brillant toyr/shuttle service in Nova Scotia
A unique service which provides vistors a shuttle to travel between Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and Wolfville. We did the round trip with the awesome Sam and her off sider Lola. Although this is not a guided tour we had the opportunity to stop for photos at various stops and lunch in UNESCO listed Lunenburg. Sam shared her knowledge of the local area and made our trip relaxed and friendly. Highly recommend Alternative Routes go small group travel

A great and friendly service, and a lifeline for the car-less visitor
It's not easy getting around the Martimes without a car, but Alternative Routes fills the gap. Sam provides an excellent service and does so with unending enthusiasm and fun, as well as lots of interesting facts and titbits. I did the full day trip starting and finishing in Halifax - Sam will pick you up from your chosen accommodation. The full day is full, but relaxing not exhausting, there is enough time to see Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and Wolfville without feeling rushed and there also regular stops for photos etc along the way. All in all a great and rewarding day out. Whether travelling with a car or not, I recommend Sam and Alternative Routes to all those heading to Nova Scotia.

A friendly, convenient and view-widening experience you can meet in Nova Scotia
Alternative Routes (AR) was great. Sam was really friendly, the lift on the van was a convenient means to travel as backpackers and an opportunity to enjoy good conversations with various kinds of people. Sam did not also give us lifts. She explained as much as she knew about the places we were going to, including small but very useful tips that only locals can know. None of my friends and I were able to rent a car, and calling cabs everytime that we needed to move to elsewhere would have cost hundreds of dollars. We were glad that we found AR, and after we had our first ride, we were more glad that we found it than before we came around. The cities in the loop were enough to see this time, but we wondered what it would have been like to see other cities, in the west side of the state. Travelling with friends does not always allow you to have proper conversations with strangers, but AR could be a great place to practice English or socialising! Frankly there is not much to do during rides except for talking and sleeping. To choose talking over sleeping you might have to get over tiredness or face the courage to do it, but at least you won’t regret it. I wish we had more of a chance to talk.

          The Highlight of Our Trip
Alternative Routes is the best way to experience Nova Scotia. You get to visit all sorts of places in the area around Halifax (Lunenburg, Peggy’s Cove, Wolfville...) in a single day. Sam is a great guide - funny, knowledgeable, and filled with colourful stories. The trip was a perfect mix of planned stops and improvisation, which was a nice personal touch for our little group. Can’t recommend this enough. Thanks Sam, and hope to see you again!

The tour itinerary is excellent. We enjoyed the stops and the scenery. Unfortunately, there were 7 people on the tour along with the guide. That is too many in that vehicle and it was not a comfortable ride especially for such a long day. We also had difficulty hearing the guide in the back seat. Would recommend this tour only with a maximum of 5 people in addition to the guide.

This trip was extremely disappointing. Not only did our tour guide create a very uncomfortable experience for everyone involved when she insisted on discussing politics, but she also told us inaccurate historic information. We had paid a higher premium for a “small group” experience with the expectation of a comfortable ride. I sat on the middle console seat that was extremely comfortable. Overall, it was very underwhelming and would not recommend to a friend.

It’s really unfortunate, Brian, that it made you uncomfortable to talk about how the indigenous people of our shared country are treated, yes we talk about the colonial brutality and residential school system that almost made the people, whose land our ancestors stole, extinct. Racism is alive and well in our country, thank you for proving that point, we still have a lot of work to do. As for how uncomfortable the other passengers were, two of your fellow riders have already left our wonderful Karen 5 star reviews each. Thank you for your feedback, please do not recommend us to your friends, we don’t want them.

A great way to see the more well-known places in the area, as well as the less famous but nonetheless lovely places. Sam will take you to hidden gems and entertain you with her interesting stories throughout the whole trip.

I hopped off in Lunenburg and stayed for 2 nights before I hopped on again to finish the tour with her... I think this is what sets her tour off from the others, being able to stay longer in a place along the route.

Karen was a phenomenal guide! She was friendly and enthusiastic, up for answering any questions, and made the tour extra special by sharing her own favorite parts of the areas we visited. Her strong connection to Nova Scotia and respect for the indigenous peoples of this area were evident. She was flexible, even open to visiting any spots we had a special interest in that weren’t on the itinerary, just to ensure we all got the experience we hoped for. To top it all off, every place we visited was beautiful. This is a well-planned and thoughtful tour that we would highly recommend. Thank you so much, Karen! 🐦

I truly loved the experience! Sam was right on time and picked us up right in front of our hotel. Despite the rainy weather on the day of our tour, Sam just knew where to take us and turned that into a fantastic fun day! She was very lively and knowledgeable and I learned so much about Nova Scotia! We ended the day with a wine tasting and went back with amazing stories and beautiful memories! I also really enjoyed interacting with the three new people in the group. Also, would like to mention that everyone in the group was super respectful and wore masks while inside the van during the tour. I was stress-free and made some of the best memories on this trip! Whether you’re traveling solo or with family, it’s a great tour to do!

Sam was a fun and energetic tour guide. It was not information heavy or overwhelming, yet she has lots of little tidbits of interesting information along the way.

Alternate Routes is aptly named. We went off the beaten path to see sandpipers at the Bay of Fundy, which was a highlight of the trip. Sam was flexible, providing options for the group to decide on, and the small group size made it easy to meet some new people.

Sam was accommodating for pick ups and drop offs. I 10/10 recommend this tour!

I had previously done the Nova Scotia tour with Sam and loved it so much I came back for the PEI tour. It was another great experience. Sam packed so much fun and adventure into the time we were there.

We got to visit Charlottetown and spend the first evening browsing and exploring. Sam arranged accommodations at a very nice local inn.

The next day, we went fishing and cooked and ate the fish we caught right on the boat. It was the best fish I've ever had.

We followed that up by visiting one of the lovely PEI beaches and enjoyed lobster right on the beach.

The final day was spent visiting the Anne of Green Gables museum and getting some Holmans ice cream and handpies from the Handpie Co. Highly recommend both of those.

Overall it was a fantastic time. I can't wait to go back and do another tour.

It was our first time visiting Halifax, and I wanted a tour where we could see as much as possible in one day, and this tour delivered. The weather was perfect, especially for May, which made being outside to see the sights even better. Our tour guide Sam was amazing and surpassed my expectations. She made us feel very welcome and comfortable and we learned a lot from her during our drive. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Halifax!

We travelled independently to Nova Scotia in July 2022. We toured New Brunswick for 1 week and 2 weeks in NS. We caught colds the first week so unfair to rate NB as we felt so unwell but it's an interesting place. We loved Nova Scotia. Lunenberg is beautiful. Lovely little town and nice beaches. We stayed with friends for 4 days so toured around quite a bit. It is very peaceful and relaxing. Plenty of places to eat. Peggy's Cove is lovely but very touristy of course. The only drawback to Canada is that it is quite expensive when eating out as there is a 15% tax added on and a 15% tip is expected. We found accommodation in a mixture of B&B and motels which were on.par price wise with the UK. Petrol is cheaper however. I would definitely recommed Canada for wonderful scenery and delightful friendly people.
