- Q1796FZvincentl00This is a TRUE story, I swear.Hello there, In the summer of 1960 or 61, I went to Darthmouth, working as a sailor on an Irving tanker. In the evening we went across to Halifax to see the town. Actually we ended up in a bootlegger joint probably cause we were too young or there were no place selling beer. This was a private home where we sat around the kitchen table qnd the woman of the house served us some beer..... don't ask me what kind..... and we all got drunk. I was remembering this anecdote while drinking a good cold Alexander Keith this afternoon while watching TV. I thought perhaps my story would bring a smie to your face. Are there still boothleggers in Nova Scotia? I suppose not. Hope you have a good week, Vincent Lapierre
- kennethrL9698SE00TourI loved it, very informative found out a lot of interesting information. Lots of good history hear. Would love to visit again.
- Darcy7300Charming guides and plenty of beer to sampleThere’s not a huge amount to physically see, but the young and enthusiastic guides more than make up for it. They put an enormous amount of effort into the experience and brought the story to life. My advice would be to eat before the tour, as they’re generous with the samples. It’s the first tour of that nature, where I’ve felt I really had the opportunity to sample what is produced in pleasant surroundings (I won’t spoil the surprise), rather than a thimble full of liquid, and then thrown out into the gift shop to buy the gin, whisky, beer whatever it is.
- U4482GRjosephg00Love the Samples! This is the only brewery tour that starts you with a sample, gives samples as you go through various sections of the brewery and then ends up with more samples and musical entertainment at the end of the tour. They have it down to a 'T' and get everything done within the hour. Easy location to find, very historical building and a remarkable background of the founder of the brewery. Parking is right across the street. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and easy going. You need to do this tour!
- Keith T00Super stop.Friendly informative staff and lovely samples. First time visit and would highly recommend as a stop. (Best chowder next door too).
- peicenl00Poor and underwhelmingTraveler’s Award - How?! As I was planning my itinerary for the Halifax trip, my research yielded multi-page article and advertisement on this establishment. It was enticing. Upon arrival in port, I ventured out to find this place. The sign on top of the building was easy to spot. However, the entrance was labeled ‘Hotel’ which I easily walked pass. It so happened that the “brewery” retail front and brewery tour is a stall inside this indoor stonewalled farmers market that wasn’t clearly labeled. I find the practically empty indoor space quint. Now that I found the so called brewery, it was underwhelming. I was upset at myself for insisting to visit this establishment. What a waste of time that I could have spent at other attractions or just sit at the waterfront people watching. 1. You can’t sample beer on-site if you are not a part of their beer tour. 2. There are no more tours available for the day. (Um I see two cruise ships in port so wouldn’t a business want to seize the opportunity to make money by offering more tours?) 3. The store front had limited beer selections and limited merchandise. 4. The store sells four- and six-pack beers and only one variety is in a single can. If I can’t sample the beer, how would I know if it’s worth buying a four- or six-pack? 5. It’s illegal to drink alcoholic beverages on the streets and in the farmers market (steps from the brewery stall) and the brewery doesn’t allow beer drinking onsite for non-tour visitors. So what the heck - how does one sample beer and choose which ones to buy? 6. They don’t sell a variety pack which I’m baffled given the cruise port they reside in. If you are from the cruise ship with customs liquor restrictions, you are out of luck. It’ll be a game of Eeny Meeny Miny Moe, pray that you picked a good beer worth taking home... I’ve visited many breweries and micro-breweries state-side and aboard. This is the most obscure establishment I encountered. Needless to say, the whole visit and experience turned me off.
- kandic201700Had a great time! This was a great tour! We enjoyed tastings some beer, and learning the brewery’s history. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable on Alexander Keith’s life and beer making process.
- petet16600Great tour!I really enjoyed this brewery tour. It’s more than just learning about how beer is made, but is a trip into the history of Halifax and Alexander Keith. The venue is beautiful old brick and stone buildings. The beer, music and hospitality are second to none!
- Lynne L00Very informativeThe tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. The ceilidh was fun. Beautiful building with lots of history. Only negative, they allow small children on the tours; the children lacked interest and were somewhat disruptive and took away from the experience. I would have given the tour a 5 star if it wasn’t for the children attending.
- 571viktoriyas00Great way to spend an hours in HalifaxSuper entertaining, advice both for locals and visitors. You get 3 beers to taste and a coupon for a beer at a local pub, all for 26 bucks. Great to hear about Keith’s family, their history and visit a cute basement bar with traditional songs and music.
- CampbellDoug00Great experience from top to...basement!Tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable, aboht the building, the time period, the man himself and the beer he made. Basement pub ceilidh was a fantastic time. The building itself is well-maintained and a great snapshot of Canadian history. Definitely recommend this tour. Best spent hour of my time in NS!
- JWalker-Ross00Awesome experienceMy husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Excellent value for the price of a ticket (lots of sampling and great portions). We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and were delighted it ended with an authentic musical experience. This tour not only shows the history of the brewery but gives tourists a peek into real Maritime hospitality. Highly recommend!
- Mike S00Brilliant tour and tasting sessionWe stumbled upon this Halifax attraction quite by accident and so glad we did. Not only an interesting tour of the brewery but an additional visit to their 'underground' pub for tasting their wares and singing allong to some Ceildh music. Thoroughly recommended. Trip takes over an hour.
- jax3mith1200Must Go! Must Do! Must See!Highly, HIGHLY recommend! Honestly this was the most fun and most informative and interesting brewery tour we have done! They immerse you into the rich history while you enjoy beer, it’s win win. Those doing the tour were very informative and made sure everyone had a blast. This song just for tourist either. Locals and tourist should all enjoy this trip through history. We had so much fun we tried to fit it in our schedule one more time before going. The end may just be my fav!! Thank you so much to the staff for such a wonderful time and excellent tour!
- 560lanceg00Happy SudsOur hosts were incredibly invested in the culture of Alexander Keith's legacy. The enthusiasm of the team providing the tour was the greatest you could imagine. Truly wonderful ambassadors for the Brewery. The entertainment by our three hosts in the Keg room was a memorable experience. All of the guests (which I was one) were actively engaged in social fun and merriment celebrating as Alex Keith would have wanted. We will return again, with friends, to share a visit in the history of this great family brewery.

I had been meaning to check this tour out for some time and regret that I left it for so long. The cost is quite reasonable and offers discounts for Seniors, students and military/veterans. Whilst it only 60 minutes in duration, it was so enjoyable it seemed so much shorter.
The Staff are knowledgeable, cheery and make the tour fun to be on. The Ceilidh was fun and the beers on offer were lovely.
I would highly recommend this tour both for the fun we had and for the interesting insight into Haligonian history (Alexander Keith was far more than just a brewer!)

I really enjoyed the brewery tour!!
I was hesitant about the tour because I’m not the biggest beer fan. However, my friend convinced me into it because she said it would be good experience and I could learn a lot about Halifax’s culture. It turns out she was absolutely right! In learning about Alexander Keith’s experiences, I also learned a lot about Halifax’s culture and history in general, from the immigration history to the Halifax explosion.
The staff there are also the highlight of my experience! They told the stories in a super engaging way! They also knew the history and answered all my questions very well.
I think my favourite part of the tour was the social after which I got to learn more about Halifax people through the folk songs and live music. All the staff member can sing and play instruments really well!
Overall, I highly recommend this tour even though it’s $40. With all the drinks and the history learned, I thought the price was quite reasonable! For those of you who likes music and drinking, this is definitely an experience you can’t miss!!

They were on time and the information shared was interesting but I could not hear very well. The microphone the tour guide was wearing didn't seem very loud and there was a large group of people. The cèilidh was very well done with great singing. We all got one small glass about the size of two shot glasses full and then two more larger glasses that were more like a large juice glass size. We got to try three different types of their beer which we thought was good. We also got a coupon for a 4 ounce taster to be used at a local restaurant.

Let me just say that the tour was fine for what it was, but that it wasn't what I was expecting. There is a tour of the historical, defunct brewery at breakneck speed, without any space for even one additional customer (not even a remote chance of "social distancing"). Then you're escorted to a cèilidh where at least one of the staff, the piano player named Emanuel when we visited, was entirely too talented to find at a kitchen party!
Anyway, about half the experience is at the party. They do a good job putting it on, and offer each customer three (different) beers. It's quite a bit of fun, but don't go if you're expecting to learn how beer is made.
If you'd like a brief, shallow history lesson followed up by a good party, this is for you. Just know that beforehand.

This was a great tour and experience of the brewery and the talent of the employees who entertained us in the pub afterward. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Our only problem was not being able to hear the tour guides who spoke too quickly or were too far away to be heard clearly. Their enthusiasm was great but speaking more slowly and being in a smaller group would have made the difference to give a five star rating.

The tour was right on time which was really good!
The tour has different sections with different guides representing those areas. All of the tour guides were passionate, friendly, and knowledgeable.
The beers offered in the tour right from the beginning till the end of the tour were really good, specially the famous IPA!!! It was good to taste it in the brewery itself, although I had it in other places as well.
The last group of guides during the beer tasting were really talented each playing different instruments and singing local songs and others.
I'm so glad that our tour was on a sunny hot day (Labor Day long weekend) at 2pm where we really needed the cold beer anyways!!!
If you are in Halifax, this is a MUST!

In Halifax / Nova Scotia for a week and took in almost every area activity and sightseeing opportunity we could.
This tour, the information and the talent of the guides / actors / musicians ( they did all of these things! ) was for sure one of the highlights of our stay.
This should be on everyone’s must do list if you’re visiting Halifax.

When we were given our first tasting, they were short one sample, and my friend didn’t get one. Since the person who brought the sample had already left, I told the guide. When the tour was over, the guide gave us a couple of extra coupons to get a sample at the Brown Hound pub, but we were still left wondering how the mistake was made, as my friend and I were the first to pick up our tickets, and the clerk at the store counts how many people arrive. Also, it would be nice if the tour was at least 1.5 hours, as we felt like it was very rushed.

Beer was great and yet not the best part of the tour. The building was beautiful, and the staff knowledgeable. The party down in the pub was the best time. The staff took turn playing different instruments and singing. A good east coast party. I did the tour plus social and I highly recommend it to anyone.
