December 1st was a very cold day
Dec. 2019 • Friends
Fun tour yesterday, yes despite -17c with wind yesterday 7 brave souls and dear Allegra talked, ate (noshed) and walked our way through Mile End neighbourhood, as Allegra explained this little enclave home to a well established large, flourishing Hassidic community. This small area is also home to much of the traditional Jewish Ashkenazi food that I grew up on that Allegra highlighted with stops at Cheskies Bakery, St. Viateur AND Fairmont bagel factories (consensus was SV). Followed by a brisk walk down the Main for a couple of bites (and warm up) at the best Jewish-style bakery that I know Hof Kelsten. We even got a big HI BAGEL TOUR! from Jeff Finkelstein, the owner and baker extraordinaire. BOOM! Then we again braved the elements and headed a few more blocks down to end at the museum; however brave Allegra left to walk to Schwartz’s to get sandwiches, drinks and pickles, so she really deserves credit! All the food was very good and it was very interesting hearing things about my community that I was unaware of. The only negative was that it was just too cold to be standing around outside unsheltered and with the wind chill, walking was brutal. Despite the elements everyone had a great time. Thanks Allegra!

Perfect combination of history and cuisine
Nov. 2019
Allegra gave my husband and I a fantastic introduction to the Jewish culture right around the corner from our apartment in Montreal. We gained a solid overview of the distinct Jewish people groups who emigrated in waves over the centuries, with stories of individuals woven through the historical narrative to add colour and interest.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food offered at each stop. Show up famished! By the final few stops, I could hardly take another bite. Unless you have a massive appetite, I would recommend eating half or less of everything offered until the smoked meat sandwich at the end.

We couldn't recommend the tour more highly.

Our guide was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the area and the history.

We were able to sample a wide array of foods. Although it was extremely hot and humid we enjoyed this walking tour and would recommend it to others.

We were the only Christians on the tour and several of our questions were answered by other guest who were Jewish.

Enjoyable but with caveats
Sep. 2019
I always try to take Jewish walking tours when I travel, and this one certainly piqued my interest because the food twist was unusual.
It was certainly interesting--and nourishing--and it was helpful to get to see the Jewish foodie sights all in one go without having to seek them out individually by myself. And our guide, Pamela, was excellent.
But I had several issues with it. First, it is way overpriced. I appreciate that the cost of the food and soda have to be included but the cost is just nuts.
Second, I think it would benefit by knocking 45-minutes off the running time. I'm not sure of the relevance of the alleys apart from the one behind the house where local dill pickles were first produced.
But the most bizarre thing is that we were asked to give back the goodie bags handed out at the start of the tour.
When we each given a canvas bag containing a bottle of water, a pickle and sundry items, I thought, "Well, at least we're getting a good-quality souvenir out of this very expensive tour."
So I found it extremely cheesy when we were told we would have to hand them over at the end "but could keep the contents."
I've never taken any tour where you're ostensibly given a gift, then it's taken away from you! And I wasn't the only person who commented on how strange it was.
Would it really kill the organisers to let us keep them? Considering what we paid, I thought it was an unnecessarily tacky thing to do.
Now I wish I'd said something to Pamela so she could have relayed it to the people behind the tour.

Very informative and fun tour with Rachel taking us through the back streets of a Montreal Jewish neighborhood. Prepare to eat a lot of food and learn about Jewish and other immigration to Quebec.

Fascinating Food Tour

Rachel was an amazing guide. I learned a lot about the history of Montreal's Jewish community and got to eat a lot of delicious food. We got to skip the line at Schwartz's because Rachel per-ordered the beef sandwiches for us.
Wear your walking shoes and bring an appetite!

I was really looking forward to this tour. Found it slow and boring. While our tour guide was very sweet- she read from a binder for most of the tour and showed pictures. There was too much time spent standing and talking, instead of walking , eating and talking about the history. Tour was at least an hour too long. There was no ‘ natural’ story telling. And the worst part- one of the food stops was closed so she brought food from another shop for us to try while taking about the one that was closed! And it wasn’t a good choice either. Overall a very disappointing experience.

This isn't the first time I do one of the museum's tours, and I always love them! I absolutely love walking tours and the Museum of Jewish Montreal is always so interesting. I love how they're really using the space around them and using the city and historic Jewish landmarks as the museum itself, I'd rather discover my city by walking through it than by seeing pictures up on walls. Their food tour is delicious and informative and so much fun - I look forward to visiting them again and I definitely would recommend

My husband and I enjoyed the Beyond the Bagel" tour with Michaela this past Thursday. We learned so much about the Jewish community and sampled some marvelous food. I would recommend that you come hungry and bring a zip lock bag for leftovers. A paper bag was provided but got soggy by the time we returned to the hotel.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and told a lot of great stories.

Exploring the soul of a city
Jul. 2019 • Couples
Michaela was a real pleasure to have as a guide, and she took us through the flouring of the city's Jewish culture with a very light touch. The tour gave the general history of the different waves of Jewish immigration, but also included fascinating anecdotes of individual immigrants who not only thrived in Montréal, but also shaped the city they made their home. It was a real pleasure.
