Making Their Mark: A Virtual Tour of Historic Jewish Montreal

By Museum of Jewish Montreal
About
Please note, this is an online virtual tour, not an in-person walking tour! Our virtual tour covers 70 years of history and 10 city blocks, stopping at 8 important locations in the Plateau neighbourhood. We explore the challenges that new Jewish immigrants faced when seeking work, healthcare and education upon arrival in Montreal, as well as the important ways in which they contributed to and shaped the city’s arts, politics and culture. Throughout the tour, guests are welcome to ask questions and engage in conversation with the guide. We use a combination of contemporary photos, archival images, oral histories, and soundscapes to create an immersive experience and we integrate this with discussion to preserve the most important elements of an in-person tour – the social aspect of getting to know a new city with an expert tour guide, or learning more about a city you love!

      Great Walking Tour
Great tour. Guide was extremely knowledgeable, and gave us a fascinating view of Jewish History in Montreal. I would highly recommend this tour. Knowledge and some exercise all in one package. I would definitely take this tour again.

Great tour if you can find it (don’t book through TripAdvisor)
Great tour. We would go with 5-stars, but booking through TripAdvisor was a big mistake. We never received a departure point and held up the tour for 20 minutes. Fortunately, someone from the tour called looking for us and told us where to meet the group. Book directly from the Jewish Museum. The tour itself was lots of fun. Recommend skipping breakfast that day. We had food from 2 bakeries, 2 bagel places and a half sandwich of smoked meat from Schwartz’s. Definitely a great tour to take.

Urban immersion at its most delicious!
Starting at the Rialto Theater, Samara expertly and professionally lead 12 of us through an up close and personal exploration of Montreal's Jewish history and culture, from the perspective of cuisine. From sweet baked goods like Cheese Crowns and Chocolate Babka, to the two premier examples of the legendary Montreal bagel, and finally to specialty sandwiches and smoked meat, this tour was an absolute delight! Paced perfectly, we walked, we learned and we snacked --- it was wonderful.

Wonderful thought-provoking tour of Le Plateau neighborhood, Montreal
My family and I loved this tour. We learned a great deal and it was so interesting to be ensconsed in one particular neighborhood and understand how Jews flocked to the neighborhood and ultimately thrived there. We felt like we were really a part of that time and place. Our guide (don't know her name - was on 8/17 in the afternoon) was terrific. She knew so much about the history and made it come alive. Highly recommend the tour!

Walk, talk, learn about Jewish history!
Romy was an upbeat, knowledgeable, and friendly tour guide. We learned a lot about the history of Jewish people and businesses in the area. Two hours was plenty of time, would not want it any longer. Thank you and we wish you well in your studies!

      A Little Walking/A Little Eating
Had a great time and learned a lot about Montreal’s Jewish community through history and food. Our guide, Ashley, was well informed about the neighborhoods and their businesses and was a gracious host for our group at each of our stops.

      Wonderful! Do it :)
We did a walking tour of Jewish Montreal and it was a wonderful way to learn and to meet other people interested in the topics. Our guide Claire was excellent, and somehow made it all feel like a walking party! Highly recommend!

      VERY informative!!!
We like to check out Jewish stuff wherever we go and we found this tour online. We were four couples all in our 60’s and me in my 70’s. And all of us agreed that this tour was wonderful. Our guide, Romy, was incredibly well-informed. She brought along a binder with lots of pictures of the past. We learned a lot about the Montreal Jewish community past and present and the fact that Jews first arrived in the area in the 18th century. If you are not tremendously mobile, like me, this tour is fine. It is LONG…about 2 hours. But there are lots of stops and places to sit. Enjoy!!!!

The guide was excellent and very well spoken. We really enjoyed listening to the history and viewing the photos and map together from the safety of our classrooms and homes for this online virtual tour experience during the pandemic when we could not gather in person.
